Sky Sports is reporting today that speculation is mounting that Alan Shearer could become the next manager of Newcastle United.
Alan Shearer – favorite for Newcastle manager job
Recent reports suggest that talks on a takeover of Newcastle have now reached an advanced stage, with two American suitors, and Sky Bet have cut their odds on Shearer taking charge of his home town club from 8/1 to 6/4. Maybe both suitors have indicated a preference that Alan Shearer be their manager.
This apparently follows significant support today from the Newcastle area.
Interim manager Joe Kinnear has now dropped to 9/2 (from 3/1) as the next permanent manager, and the display and result on Sunday will certainly not help his case. To be viable, Joe has to win almost every game he is in charge of the team, in such a short time-frame he is at the club.
Philip Anschutz, the billionaire LA Galaxy owner and Clark Hunt, who owns MLS side FC Dallas and NFL club The Kansas City Chiefs, are the two Americans thought to be on the short list.
Alan Shearer was seen at St. James’ Park during Newcastle’s excellent win against Aston Villa last Monday night, and we wonder if that has any significance, since John Carver would certainly be welcomed back on Tyneside, maybe as assistant manager to Alan.
He was assistant manager to Sir Bobby Robson while Bobby successfully managed the club, and John regularly received high praise from the Newcastle manager at that time.
John right now manages Toronto FC in the MLS, whose season has just finished.

Comment #41For the people who doubt Shearer has the experience you have to remember he does have the experience, he knows football inside out and for any striker at newcastle he would be a great role model, i think owen would stay too. please make this true!

Comment #43Hard to know if Shearer is the right man, I wouldn’t like to see him do poorly with them although he could well do a great job and get the players playing.
however look at Gianfranco Zola………..

Comment #45Why would a very wealthy man who will also be on a nice little earner as a football pundit want to destroy his lifestyle and possibly his reputation by becoming the toon manager. The level of expectation will be through the roof, how could he ever satisfy that- football has loads of examples where top players have failed as managers. Of the current top 4 prem league managers none have played for their senior national sides nor has Mourinho or van Gaal.Name the last(recent) England player who has been a successful manager (ie won more than one major trophy)

…Well the bookies don’t like losin’ cash,
so you never know i guess…Hmmmm, he’s had enough time now to have a good think, sound a few football friends out, collect a few potential coaches & he probably knows a hell of a lot more about what’s happenin’ inside the club than most, especially us!?!..
…Is he ready for the onslaught?..I thought he’d have 2/3 more years in the sun, with his mrs & bairns!..

Comment #52skunk, speaking of the bookies losing cash
i remember the day kev returned, i was in my local brokelads, by myself, having just lost all the money i had on me, so i left.
I went in later on to speak to my mate who works behind the desk, and it turns out…sky sports confirming KK as our new manager appeared on the tellies in there. My mate got ready to pay out, and whilst sitting at the desk, realised the confirmation hadnt reached the ladbrokes system yet.
He screamed for everyone in there to get their money on keegan as soon as possible, and apparently the entire place made a pretty penny. devestated!

Comment #55genuinly as far as he’s concerned, the lad behind the desk is a scouse but he really likes newcastle and i seriously doubt he’d bother lying about it!
said he tried to call me to get me back in.
i wouldnt think something like that was possible, its pretty poor on behalf of ladbrokes if it did happen, but it was apparently a 45 second or so window max for everyone to get their bets on.

I did say English players, as for KK you’ve got to be kidding. Zico has won a Turkish league and cup with their top club side and an Asian cup, Klinsman got third place in the World Cup when hosted in his own country, Schuster managed 7 clubs his only success is last year with Real Madrid, Beckenbaur outstanding as a player and manager. As I said last recent English international- being a Geordie and knowing the club won’t win you tactical battles and will only motivate players for s short period- I’m not knocking the bloke he is a true legend who could have played for anyone but chose us but my worry is his reputation would quickly be ruined if it all went t*ts up.

Comment #72I don’t think it’s a good time for Shearer to become our manager. Not the best timing for him anyway.
what’s the next owner will be like?
We can’t risk another hero of ours with those business ppl.
A good timing for an established European manager, perhaps.

Comment #73I second Zico for manager…was crunked when his name came up last time. He’s seen success at the national level, success at the club level, good connections, a very strong following, and he’s a character behind the mic. The guy has the passion of Keegan with a much more modern football mind. It’s WAAAYYYYYY too soon for Shearer. He’s an even more emotional pick than Keegan, and Keegan is a better manager. It’s Zico all the way for me.

Comment #78My three managers in no particular order / Hughes who will surely be available in a few days / Luxemburgo who is world class but no experience of EPL / and our very own Ketsbaia who has done incredibly well with tiny Famagusta. JFK, just an ordinary bloke with an exceptionally foul mouth. And finally if Shearer has any sense he will pass this time around and let someone else sort out the current mess.

Comment #80Please God no. Please no no no!!
It will be a masacre. Some do argue that oh Keane did it, and ya he did, he went to Sunderland and is doing a really good job.
But he took a team at the bottom of the Championship with zero expectations to winning the thing, and he did so superbly.
And then they survived relegation last year and I firmly believe that they’ll survive it this year.
But Keane also had no conections with Sunderland, it’s history or players there, the closest thing he had a link with was Quinn.
Keane was totally inexperienced but he was always special, a level above the rest, and he played under two of the greatest managers the game have ever seen.
But Shearer is inexperinced, he has such a strong connection to the team, he’s a hero in the club, city..etc. It’ll be too much, it would have been like Keane taking the Man U job straight after getting the badges.
It would be suicidal, it was like Stan (oh God) taking the Irish job, no experience whatsoever but because he was an Irish hero and had x amount of caps and captained the side on many occasions..etc. He didn’t get it because he had potential he got it because he was Stan, and it was a disaster and a half waiting to happen, so, so, unbelievably naive.
He’s no longer remembered first as Stan Irish football legend, now it’s for the manager that had a debacle of a campaign who lost 5-2 to Cyprus.
And that’s what I fear will happen here. I fear we’ll get relegated and Shearer will no longer be rememberd first as the great Toon legend he was but the man who got Newcastle relegated.
And like, he’s supposed to walk into that dressing room and ya, it’ll be one thing for a good handeful of the players, but what about Given and Harper are they supposed to treat them as a manager and, what..golf afterwards?
The senior players defended Stan to the death in the Irish debacle, which was such a waste of energy, they didn’t defend him because he was a good manager, but because he was their friend and he loyalty that came with that. But every man and his dog could see how demoralised the likes of Given were when he was roaring at his defence, Dunne desperately trying as well, but no one else. Between them I think they picked up every MOTM awards in that campaign.
The players were suffering like hell, and I mean you could see it, they were torn. Do they criticize him or back their mate??
I saw Given and Duff go through it all ready, I don’t want to see them go through it again. It wastes too much time.
Joe will get us home this season, stick with him, if not, get some experienced manager in to finish the season, I don’t see why Joe isn’t that man.
