Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Wolfsburg’s German Under-21 international striker Ashkan Dejagah, but we don’t think it’s necessarily a contingency plan in case Michael Owen moves on in January or next summer.
Ashkan Dejagah – 22 year old German Under-21 striker
We wouldn’t be at all surprised if Joe Kinnear, given he is still here in January, will not try to move Mark Viduka on, and get some money for him. His contract is up this summer, and he’s on around £65K/week but has only played 28 times (21 starts) for Newcastle and scored 7 goals, since signing in the summer of last year.
We do have a one year option on him we think, but don’t believe Newcastle will take him up on that.
To say Mark is injury probe is a massive understatement.
Ashkan Dejagah was born in Tehran, Iran 22 years ago last July, and has emerged as a target after impressing Director (football) Dennis Wise playing for his country against France’s Under-21s just over two weeks ago.
Michael Owen contract runs out next summer – and is free to talk to other clubs in January, which he will no doubt do, if the Newcastle situation doesn’t get sorted out quickly.
Michael can elect to play for Newcastle though then end of this season and become a free agent in the summer and get a bumper contract from his new club. We also believe Newcastle would offer him decent terms, but we have no idea if the situation will be settled with a new owner and a permanent manager by January.
Newcastle may give up on Mark Viduka, since he’s always injured and is now 33 years old, so the injuries will hardly start abating now. Mark can hardly be said to be earning his wages on Tyneside, and yes we know – it’s not his fault.
We have Andy Carroll (19) and Shola Ameobi (27) at the club and youngsters Nile Ranger (17) and Fabio Zamblera (18) all coming through, but it suggests they are not ready for first team duty for a while. Ameobi is currently doing a decent job at Newcastle but we may still elect to let him go.
It also doesn’t say much for the future of Spaniard Xisco at Newcastle, who is just 22 years old, and was only signed by Wise in the summer for £5.7M. Not a good use of Newcastle’s money, it would seem.
What do you think?
