In a disappointing first half for home fans, Newcastle United, for the second time in a week, haven’t turned up for their crucial match with Wigan and are 1-0 down at the interval.
There is lots to do if we are going to get anything out of this game.
It took Wigan, who are without star strikers Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki, just 3 minutes to go ahead in this game. Kapo was 25 yards away from goal and he placed the ball nicely into the path of Ryan Taylor, who beat Shay Given with a sliced shot into the net.
But we had expected the Newcastle players to be really ready for this game, but in the first 30 minutes it was all Wigan.
After just 15 minutes former Middlesbrough youngster Cattermole was more than a little bit reckless, with a tackle on Joey Barton, and after being treated Joey unfortunately couldn’t continue.
Danny Guthrie replaced Joey Barton in central midfield.
Just before the half time whistle Martins had a great opportunity to draw level on the edge of the area, and he had only goalkeeper Kirkland to beat, but the Nigerian hit the ball against Kirkland’s legs and the ball was again cleared.
But when the half time whistle blew, it has been less than an impressive first half display by the Newcastle players, and they need to get a rocket from manager Joe Kinnear.
Anything other than a win today, with Chelsea away next week, will be very worrisome indeed.
Why we keep starting games like this, and dig ourselves a hole, which we then have to dig ourselves out of, in the second half, we have absolutely no idea.
But if we cannot raise our game significantly in the second half then a defeat to Wigan, at home, would be little short of disastrous. 🙁
