It seems that Newcastle don’t give up until they get their man, since there is news today that Newcastle United will go after Stephen Warnock of Blackburn Rovers, in January.
Newcastle scouts Jeff Vetere and Lil Fuccillo took in Blackburn Rovers’ game with Sunderland at Ewood Park on Saturday, to check out the former Liverpool player and England international Stephen Warnock.
Stephen is a good player, no doubt about it, and would fit in very well at Newcastle, where he could be used in our troubled left-back spot. But Stephen has also been playing well in midfield for Blackburn recently.
We did try for Stephen in the summer, and it seemed that Kevin Keegan was very keen on the lad, but once Paul Ince was appointed manager we couldn’t get Stephen to Tyneside, and in fact we couldn’t get a new left back into the club, that had been promised to Kevin Keegan.
Jose Enrique is finding it difficult to make the left-back spot his own on Tynesdie, and time is running out. We paid a lot of money for the Spanish Under-21 international, but he hardly had a good game on Saturday, and quite honestly looked awful.
In fact we would expect Seb Bassong to come in at left-back if Stephen Taylor can play central defense at Chelsea on Saturday. Bassong has proved himself a steady player, who turns in some solid performances.
We really do hope, whatever happens, that Dennis Wise has done his job, and we can go after reinforcements in January, whoever owns the club at that time.
It is important that Wise goes full steam ahead and tabs reinforcements that we can bring in during the January transfer window.
Stephen Warnock would be an excellent acquisition for us, but don’t be surprised if Mark Hughes, his former boss, also goes after him for Man City.
