Kinnear Still Uncertain On Defense Line-Up Tomorrow

Joe Kinnear has not yet decided who he will play in defense tomorrow, against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Habib Beye – center-back tomorrow?

It would appear that Joe can select between Jose Enrique and Charles N’Zogbia for the left back spot, but he also has options to bring in more experience to the middle of the defense. He could play Habib Beye there, and play Bassong maybe in the right-back spot and Charles or Jose at left-back.

But it seems that Joe will need to concentrate more on defense for his back four, and that may tell against N’Zogbia at left back.

Kinnear told the Evening Chronicle today:

“I am still mulling over the formation of our defense at Stamford Bridge tomorrow and I do have two or three options.”“I could leave things as they were when we started against Wigan Athletic last Saturday, even though I know Jose Enrique did not have the best of games and that is why I took him off.”

“I could change one of our central defenders and play him at left-back and obviously Charles N’Zogbia is an option. One of the things in Charles’ favor is that he is brilliant going forward, but he is a bit of a worry at the other end.”

“And in the end it may all go down to what Chelsea are going to do up front. I am assuming that Joe Cole will be on their right and I will have to decide just who is the best to cope with him.”

“There would not have been a problem had Steven Taylor been fit but now I have been left with a difficult decision and it is important that I make the right decision.”

We’d like to see Habib at center-back, and he’s played there before for the club and played very well. Maybe his experience at the back would be better used tomorrow in the center of our defense.

It’s asking a lot of young Seb Bassong to play against Chelsea’s excellent attacking players, as he is still learning the ropes to a large extent, although center-back is his favorite position.

We’ll not know what Joe’s team is until around 2:30 pm tomorrow local time, for what is going to be an extremely difficult game for the lads.

We’ll need to show some guts and spirit tomorrow, and not a small amount of skill, if we are to get anything out of tomorrow’s game.

Fortune favors the brave – so we still need to give it a go.

    Given

    Beye Colo Seb Charlie….

    Sorted….

Some people may whine on at me stating enrique is better defensively that charlie; i agree that charlie is not a great defender; but i have seen nothing from enrique to suggest he’s a premiership player and with his lack of pace he will get raped tomorrow….just my opinion tho

So if Kinner plays beye at center back, who’d play right-back? Geremi? I’m confused as I thought we only had one right-back fit.

I read an article about jose about him really not wanting to leave newcastle and that he’d really like to finish off the three years on his contract becasuse he loves the fans and the city and that he’s settled. I think we should support him as he can become a very good player, he’s still very young, lets give him time huh?

I think Beye is a stronger player on the right, he does dive in a little and may well get caught out at centre back. He also gives us a bit bombing down that right side too – none of that if he’s at CB. He’s a quality player so im sure he’ll do well whatever Joe decides to do.

    Personally, I would go for:

    Beye Bassong Colo Enrique

Beye and Colo are good enough to guide Bassong, and if you want to make it in the Prem, you gotta play against good players – it will be good for Bassong, unless he cocks up in the first 5-10 mins!

Not a fan of Enrique at all, however, on this occasion I think its better to have him there instead of Zog, as good as Zog is there is no doubt he will be caught up field – not good against Chelsea.

As for Enrique, tell him to just stay put, when he gets the ball to play the easy one to Duff and let him do the work. And for gods sake, watch the line that the other defenders are playing!

Beye has played alot at CB throughout his career, we need his pace and experience against anelka. Put geremi in at RB bassong at lb and that will solve alot of communication issues as there will be three french speakers in the backline.
Play Martins on the left as he and bassong will link up well together, jonas on the right and geremi can deliver balls on the over lap i would play a cm of:

    ———Butt——-Guthrie———
    —Jonas——-Zog———Martins

Martins has improves alot in his tracking back and well all know how good jonas is defensively

The owen up front on his own, and i would give ranger 15-20 mins aswell

MURPHY-i agree whole heartedly. Jose is young, makes mistakes yes but he has potential. Christ, if you’re getting rid of a young lad after 2 years at the club then what are the rest of our youngsters/transfer targets gonna think. They dont perform immediatly they’re being shipped off?
Obviously due to our strength and depth of squad, along with our commanding position in the premier league, we dont have time or space for spanish u21’s still learning their trade at newcastle……..

Anyone who has watched N`Zog. at LB can tell you he is niether comfortable or competant at that position, sure he can make runs upfield, but seems to forget he is primarily a defender and gets caught out of position.
Enrique contrary to the opinion of some , will never be a competent PL defender , cut our losses and send him back to Espana.
As for Rise, thanks but no thanks, I`m getting tired of Liverpool`s rejects, if they are not good enough for the pool why should we want them.
Theres a number of good young players available at reasonable cost, what the f**k is wrong with our scouting system.
Perhaps they should check in with TOM TOON,
or better hire him as an advisor. (kidding)

re Alchemist and three French speakers…. sound idea in principle may be worth a try.

Agree, Anelka’s gonna be a handful for anyone but as he tends to rove into the inside left, is Bassong the best bet to provide that extra bit cover for Beye?

We have to accept that when it comes to the LB position, we have to choose between:

    1. Moving a CB over and trying to plug the CB gap in other ways. Not good against good opposition.

    2. Playing Zog, who’s no defender and wasted back there.

    3. Playing Enrique, who’s not much use going forward, but does have courage in defending. On his day. Mostly.

I think we should stick with the strongest CB combo we can and the least bad of the LB choices given the threat of Joe Cole.

As for the rest – it’s a nice problem, but I’d be tempted with:

    Beye – Bassong – Colo – Enrique

Jonas – Guthrie (sub with Duff later) – Zog

    Owen
    Shola Martins

We may get spanked – but we may also put the fear of the Geordie god into ’em with all those attackers on the field.

That central midfield position has lots of options. Butt or Geremi if you’re ahead and want to calm things down. Duff if you want to really attack, and Guthrie who’s a bit of everything, but lacking experience for such an important role.

Beye should stay at right back with bassong and colo at centre back. I would pick Enrique at left back bcos he is the better defender but after his last game I can see why Joe is unsure who to play

Lesh…. Yeah it seemed like a good idea as alot of our problems have seemed to stem from lack of communication between the defensive line. Personally I don’t think we could get away with three at the back or three in the middle tbh.

Last year when it worked we had viduka to hold the ball up and he also won more in the air than shola would… Barton also helped alot tracking back, which i dont really rate duff at.

5 man midfield is the best chance tbh, drop shola because he won’t get a sniff against their defence.

Okay- I’ve got some flack for proposing this formation on another post, but I stand by it!

    —————-Given—————-
    Beye———–Colo———Enrique
    ——Bassong——–Butt———-
    Jonas———-Duff————Zogs
    ——-Martins——–Owen——–

I think having a 3 man defensive front at face value would mean suicide. BUT- notice the chance I’m taking with Bassong lining up as a CDM with Butt. I think that having a defender line up in this position (especially one who’s eager to get a touch on the ball) will bolster our defense AND our ability to set up plays in midfield. When needed, they can play forward a bit, but you can also use them to fill the gaps on either side of Coloccini as a kind of make-shift CB (mainly just to have 5 guys in the box when needed). Now offensively- the CDMs can play the ball to the wings (jonas and zogs) who can take it down the sides or can unload it to Duff who should have options with Martins, Owen, and a 3rd man (again- Jonas or Zogs). This formation will allow us a broad variety of defending and attacking options. Also- I can’t recall the last time this tactic was used in the EPL. I think it would go a LONG way to throw Chelski off their game.

Since Barton is out I wouldn’t like us to play 2 in the midle as I feel we will get dominated anyway, I feel we should just go for broke and let our strikers cause some panic.

Ofcourse we could playe Butt in place of Guthrie and Duff instead of N’Zogbia but I would like to see us play 4-3-3

I feel to get a result at stamford bridge, teams outside of the top 4 have to have a plan, either pack every man behind the ball ala Bolton and hope for a draw, we cannot defend so I just think we will have to accept that we will be dominated in the midle of the park and hope our strikers are in enough form to rattle theire defence.

I still think the 3-5-2 will work, as long as the CDMs play good defense and stay close to the box. This formation won’t work so well for keeping the ball tied up in midfield, but will work VERY well for a counter attack style offense. It presents a formidable defense with 3 fullbacks and two CDMs while it also presents a formidable offensive front with a CAM (Martins or Duff) and 2 forwards. Especially if you’re playing a 3rd man release strategy. Like I said though, it will leave the midfield a bit stretched, but that’s not what we excel at anyway, so this way gives us a chance to play to our advantages.

    ————-Given————-
    Beye——–Colo——–Enrique
    —-Bassong——-Butt——-
    Jonas———————–Zogs
    ————Martins————
    —–Owen———–Shola—-

Sub Geremi for Bassong if needed, and Duff for Martins if needed. With Martins filling this role, it’s almost more of a 3-4-3, but I think the role of CAM is key. I think Martins would be the logical choice for this as he’s pacy as hell and has a knack for being in the right spot.

Can people now see why Keegan wanted to leave ??

How many times did we hear him say in the summer that he wanted a quality Left back to play in front of the young naive Enrique,

No its too easy to give Blackburn a fair price like £5m-£7m for a 26 year old full England International in Stephen Warnock, No lets offer them £2m about what they paid Liverpool for a player who’s improvement in recent seasons in as impressive as anyone.

We are still woefully Short in the centre of Midfield a competent chairman would have given KK control of the Modric deal which would have gone through, Mark my words.

Failing that an ambitious chairman would have paid big for a player the quality of Inler but its OK because we have an aging Butt, A young Guthrie, A forever unavailable Barton and an footballing abortion called Geremi but still we made money on Milner and Faye two possible options so well done Mikey.

But its OK because Dennis Pennis signed a 16 yr old keeper from the mackems and a 15 year old striker from Plymouth so all is forgiven.

People should also note that Tozer, Kadar, Baheng, Godsmark, Donaldson, Krul, Forster, Carroll, Edgar, N’Zogbia, Taylor ETC. Were scouted by or already at the club pre Wise, Vetere and Jiminez.

Its far Too easy to blame Kev.
