Joe Kinnear was delighted with his Newcastle side, who were missing one or two key players, after they earned a vital point at Chelsea this afternoon, holding the league leaders to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.
Joe Kinnear – yes – we got a point!
This was an excellent and gritty display by the Newcastle side in London, and they limited Chelsea to just a couple of very good chances all afternoon, and when asked how important a point it could be, Kinnear told Sky Sports after the game:
“Very important and above all it was the performance really.” “It wasn’t looking too good for us a few days ago coming here with key players missing so there was always the worry – you won’t get a bigger task than coming to Stamford Bridge at the moment .”
“And the manner in which we performed was very heart-warming,” “And the way the players played and we had some outstanding individual performances as well.” “It is a massive lift. I think everybody was concerned obviously about how Chelsea had been doing – it is not an easy place to come to.”
“But it is a massive lift in the dressing room right now and everybody is well pleased with themselves and well pleased with their performance so it is a great day for ourselves.” “It says that we are capable of doing exceptionally well,”
“But if we look back in a few weeks’ time and just say what a tremendous result this really was – it is not the easiest place to come to and when you are playing against some of the best players in the world sometimes you are thinking the worst.”
“But we went in with a very positive attitude and – as I said – one of the best performances that we had as a team.” “It is a job that I am just delighted that I took, I am delighted that I got the opportunity and I am going to make the most of it.”
You’ve got to give it to Joe. Here is a man who seems just thrilled to be managing the Newcastle United club, and seems to be doing it with little help from the Newcastle Board. And it is becoming obvious he is starting to get some good performances out of the side, and finally sorting out our perennially weak defense.
If we can get some good wins this next month, and get away form the relegation zone, that is our next step, and since Joe is here another month – we expect Ashley to help Joe and Dennis Wise to strengthen the squad.
Four additional players in January of the caliber that have been mentioned such as Denilson, Riise, Per Ciljan Skjelbred and Warnoock, and the squad will be in decent shape. And if Joe has to sell to bring in new players, we can let Cacapa, Smith, Xisco, Enrique and possibly Krul leave to fund replacements needed for the squad.
We also have to remember that four of our summer buys, Coloccini, Bassong, Gutierrez and Guthrie all had excellent games for the side today, and have improved our squad, so there’s nothing much wrong with the players we are bringing in, that’s for sure.
Although we cannot look too far ahead, because of the sale of the club, we should probably extend Joe’s contract through the summer, for the good of the club, so he can bring the side together and start strengthening the squad.
Let’s try to get long term stability at the club, well at least for the next 6 months. 😀
Comments welcome.

I totally agree with you Spyro. How can you sell our young players, especially the foreign ones, that had to be given time to get familiarized with their new surroundings? That is a step backwards, and not forward imo.
I would not mind getting rid of the dead wood like Viduka @ Smith. Even Ameobi I would sell, since his valuation is probably higher now than it has been for years. I doubt he will get much playing time when Viduka is fully fit.

Comment #159Too early to make judgement and sell the likes of Enrique and Xisco; let’s give them both a realistic chance. I believe Xisco still injured; yes?
I would sell;
Smith (injured, not good enough)
Geremi (not good enough)
Viduka (sell before contract runs out)
Cacapa (not good enough)
Given or Harper (if we need funds)
Owen (if he doesn’t sign a new contract)
I expect 4 of the above to leave in Jan-09 so will need replacements as the squad is too small and will need:
RB – Cover for Beye (not essential if we keep Geremi0
CB – Experienced first team player to bring on the likes of Taylor, Bassong and Edgar (?)
LB – Some one to show Enrique the ropes for a few years
CM – Competition for Nicky Butt who won’t have many seasons left in him plus replacement for Geremi if he leaves
CF – Replacements for Owen, Smith and Viduka if one or all leave
