Kinnear Ponders Who To Play Up Front

Oba Martins has found the net 6 times this season, and his terrific goal last week after 87 minutes, against Wigan, should have really given Newcastle all 3 points.

Oba Martins – will he start today?

But it may be that Martins may be left out of the team today, if Michael Owen is given a start, and if Joe Kinnear decides he wants Ameobi up front, to take the punishment and be the battering ram for the Newcastle attack.

24-year-old Oba obviously wants to keep his place but he also knows there is growing competition for places in the Newcastle attack as players get fit:

“I enjoy playing with Shola and he is doing very well right now, but I enjoy playing with all the strikers here,” “I’m confident I can work well with any of them.”

“I know I have to keep scoring and playing well if I am going to stay in the team, especially now Michael is fit again.”

“There are four or five of us competing for two places so it’s difficult for the manager to keep everyone happy, but we know getting the team out of trouble is the most important thing.”

“I don’t agree when people say I can’t play with Michael. I can play with anyone.”

While Kinnear clearly thinks that Owen as his best player, Martins and Ameobi have justified their selections with goals and good performances recently, and you cannot ask for much more than that:

Martins added:

“It is a difficult decision for the manager, but I think I’ve done enough,”  “Michael isn’t a big player and neither am I, but we offer different things to the team. We are not too similar.”

We don’t know id Joe will go with a Martins Owen pairing in attack, but it could work, and would at least be a flexible front pairing, with both players able to score goals at any time, and with any foot.

What do you think?

There is nothing to ponder Joe, if Owen doesnt start today i think there will be alot of rather unimpressed Newcastle fans come 15:05.

Shola is a donkey. Right now he’s a donkey in form which just means he can shin it in from close range. Play the strikers with actual talent.

    carl

    3 goals
    1 penelty
    second highest in assist
    got a player sent off
    wins header
was his shot that got owen his returning goal

and you say player is a donkey!!!!

i would do for same strikers coz owen playing area is around the opponents penalty box,

and martins has a great work rate and has the ability to create something out of nothing

if owen is playing then we must go with 3 strikers

Play Martins, Shola and Owen from the start. We have already been written off as having no chance of anything from this game, so he might as well just go for it.

Does it really matter if we lose by 4 while trying to get something; or losing by three trying to achieve a bit of damage limitation?? Die trying, dont lie and whimper.

I totally agree with Oba that he and Owen can play together between them they have every attribute needed to be a top striker.

    – Both are much faster and can the retain the ball a lot better than most 6 foot strikers.

    – Oba can come off and allow Owen to play on the last defender or vice versa

    – Both can jump higher and are much better in the air than most 6 foot strikers.

    – Between them they can score from pretty much anywhere with either foot.

    – Both Have scored goals at every level despite not being regulars else where and constantly being let down by team mates (Certainly Here).

If they start they can potentially give Terry and Alex/Ivanovic as many problems as they have had all season if they play together and their defenders would have Sholas card marked before kick off anyway.

Both should start today even with Shola in good form, You have to play your best players when they are available.

Dont leave any of them out

    ——————–Given—————-

    —Beye——Colo——Bass—–Nzog-

    ——Jonas—–Butt/Guthrie—Duff-

    ——Owen——-Ameobi——Martins

I usually say we can win a game by working in 2’s but against chelsea we can win by working in 3’s !

    Beye,Jonas,Owen

    Nzogbia,Duff,Martins

    Colo/Bass,Butt/Guthrie,Ameobi

Yeah, nothing to lose by going 4-3-3 in this game. Oba’s got his scoring boots on and whenever he gets a good run in the team he’ll get the goals in somehow. Shola’s recent form is not to be sniffed at, to take him out of the team in favour of Owen, who, in fairness, scored off the bench again last week, would be a bit unfair.

Simple thing is Owen is now fully fit and you cannot drop either him or Martins for Shola, I feel sorry for him and he has played well in Owens absence, however both Owen and Martins are strikers of the highest quality, as is Viduka when he returns, and all 3 should be in the starting line-up before Ameobi.

He deserves his place on the bench and he is a good backup for injuries, if Kinnear realy thinks about this though Ameobi should either be on the bench or starting as part of a front 3 with Owen and Martins.
