Newcastle Get Masssive Lift Out Of Chelsea Performance

The Newcastle dressing room was apparently something to behold, after Newcastle’s gritty defensive performance against Premier League leaders Chelsea yesterday afternoon.

Joe Kinnear – performance has given the side a massive lift

A delighted Joe Kinnear told Sky Sports after the game:

“You won’t get a bigger task than coming to Stamford Bridge at the moment.” “It is a massive lift. I think everybody was concerned obviously about how Chelsea had been doing – it is not an easy place to come to – but it is a massive lift in the dressing room right now.”

“Everybody is well pleased with themselves and well pleased with their performance so it is a great day for ourselves. It says that we are capable of doing exceptionally well.”

“But if we look back in a few weeks’ time and just say what a tremendous result this really was – it is not the easiest place to come to and you are playing against some of the best players in the world.”

There were lots of good things to take out of this game for Newcastle fans, not least of which was the fighting performance of every man wearing the famous black and white stripes of Newcastle.  That warmed the heart of many a Newcastle fan yesterday.

Of course Shay Given was immense again in goal, and center-backs Coloccini and Bassong both gave inspired performances, and the rest of the lads supported each other in what was an overall  terrific team performance of grit and courage.

This wasn’t expected, and if we can play like this in London, against one of the best teams in Europe, let’s hope we can take Middlesbrough apart at the Riverside Stadium next Saturday, where the emphasis has to be on attack and all taking 3 points.       😀

Bring in Appiah, we can’t go on playing Butt.

    Bassong for France!

As I have already stated Colli ans Bassong rae our best pairing.
Give them a run of games together to develop the partnership and they will be immense as yesterday proved. Playing together consistantly can notonly help them but the team as a whole.
Sorry Taylor it’s the bench and providing cover for you.

    As per,
no credit given by the usual ‘pundits’…They ALL totally write us off before the game, then when we come up with a great defensive game, away to the chavs…Not a dickie bird of praise…Typical!..
…Ta Big Al for buckin’ the trend tho’!..
…Funny how the arse’s D wasn’t an ‘absolute shambles’ etc, huh?..
…Funny how the chavs didn’t ‘waste’ their opportunities, huh?..
…Just forget the game & start sayin’ how everyone’s off in jan…That’s the press for ya’!..
    …Boycott them!..
    😀

…Well done Lads, keep it up!..
    …Toon Toon!..

Not just an unexpected point BUT no hammering on the goal difference – which was my fear. Nice to be able to relax on Sunday without having to avoid sharp objects and lengths of rope.

Got to agree about Butt. He’s giving away possession so much lately and his tackling is getting worse. I’d be tempted to try Guthrie and Zog in the middle at boro.

Agree also on BUTT…if we could get in Appiah we might go for 4-3-3 again with DUKE up front…the two smaller strikers owen and martins usually provide some defensive tasks for the team as well (they showed it on many games, that this works and they even score goals!).

Another stupid idea could be to play Taylor alongside Bassong and then play coloccini in the defensive midfield role.

All the others (duff, gutièrez, owen, martins, duke) could then focus on attacking!

When we play Boro we should try and play similar to how we did yesterday. Newcastle can still be a great attacking side whilst playing on the counter attack. Liverpool have been doing it for years yet no one complains about them being negative. We should make ourselves a counter attack team unless we are playing a really poor side.

Anybody see the shot of Harry Redknapp in the stands yesterday? I think we all know who he was eyeing up – Given. Got to say, at his stage in his career, Given should be thinking about bettering himself, just like Krul is, and if I were him i’d leave.

But really, i’m astounded at how good we played defensively yesterday, and god knows with just a little bit of luck we could maybe have even nicked it yesterday with that block off the line from a Chelsea head.

Exciting times ahead if we go on and take the positives from that game and maybe add a bit more cut and thrust into our attack against obviously lower teams.

Hope Kinnear brings some quality players in January.

turkish finish 6th we,re not good enough,we will be lucky to stay up this season.
we are still in a relegation fight and one fortunate result wont change that.
although we hung on for a point, deserved through dogged defending we have a long way to go.

    Paul are you serious.
Shay’s one of our front runner for player of the year so far. No ones played better then him, no one.
We’ve let in so many stupid goals from pathetic defending and God only knows how many penalties and free kicks.
None of which were his fault.
He’s been the closet to flawless that a keeper can be. There is no keeper who has been on better form then him. That’s not bias, it’s how it is.

To blame wee Shay for conceding those goals is just spitefully aimed at a player that you’ve shown over and over again, that for some reason, you do not like.

given was imense yesterday another goal keeper would have let in a couple of goals yesterday

and in his career throughout he has been 1 of the worlds best imo the title for worlds best goes to buffon but shay isnt to far behind and would take up 2

he has done brilliantly especially with the defenders he has had playin in front of him

with all due respect everytime you come on here all you ever talk about is how bad given is why and are you even a toon fan

Get real, Shay’s let several goals in this season that he woulda saved with better positionin’…Get ya’ blinkers off!..
…& he’s brought on more pressure to the defense, particularly at the end of games, by hoofin’ when he should be rollin’ the ball to Colo etc…
…Shay’s great at action saves tho’, no doubt!..

The back four were superb yesterday–every one of them. I think Taylor needs to sit and keep this group.

But what happened in the midfield?

We were totally unable to keep any possession for any length of time.

What happened was we were against one of the best midfields in the world.

Deco, Lampard, Mikel and Ballack towards the end.

Saying that, i still feel Guthrie and Butt did fairly well and held their own against Chelsea’s superstars.

Punk Skunk your the same, you ALWAYS come on and bash the wee lad. All the time, nearly all your posts criticize him. Are you and Paul the same people or what?

    Give him a break.

Maybe I’m a wee bit biased, but the lads been outstanding this season and has been our best most consistent player of the last God only know how many years.

The more I see yours and Pauls posts the more I feel that there are either two hidden Sunderland fans on here or yere both the same people. I can’t decide which.
