Joe Kinnear is enjoying the accolades that his Newcastle team are receiving for their never-say-die performance against a very good Chelsea side on Saturday, who just couldn’t find a way to score against a completely committed Newcastle side, that Joe and his coaching staff had prepared so perfectly for the significant challenge at Stamford Bridge.
The Toon Army – Joe and players didn’t let them down
But the lads kept to their game-plan and got what in the end they fully deserved, in gaining a valuable point from the capital, against one of the best teams in Europe.
Joe said today:
“It was a team effort, and I’m delighted for the Geordie fans that traveled down,” “We didn’t let them down – we rolled our sleeves up and deserved to get something out of the game.”
“I think we’d been written off before the match, and Chelsea were 1/6 on. We had a game plan. We decided we’d drop off a bit more and let them have it at the back.”
“As long as they played it across and in front of us, we were always nice and comfortable. Then, of course, with the pace we’ve got, we could grab the opportunity if and when we made it.”
“When Spider-man (Jonas Gutierrez) went down the line and dribbled past one or two of them on that right hand side and pulled it back, I thought that was the one. I thought Oba (Martins) was going to stick it away, but it was great defending on their part.”
“There’s not many people going to come here and get the result we got, and this will boost confidence. Everybody’s on fire. It feels like a victory.”
Joe was right when he said the players didn’t let the traveling fans down, and the fans were in full voice at the end of the game, delighted by their team’s grit and courage.
And Joe will now experience the vibes in the City of Newcastle today, and all this week, that is the warmth, delight and utter passion that follows a great Newcastle performance, even though we didn’t win.
That’s what it’s like after a good performance and yes it’s almost the exact opposite – doom and gloom – after a pathetic performance – but that’s what passion is, both the good and the bad.
We must now be consistent and challenge for a win at Middlesbrough on Saturday, and really build on what was an unexpected but fabulous performance in London on Saturday.

Comment #81Steven Bruce should take over as manager. He has put together a thoroughly competitive side that match anyone on their day. Also, the players he would bring would seriously benefit our squad.
Cattermole to replace Butt
Palacios to replace Geremi
Valencia to replace Zog (Only because he wants to leave)
Figuera to replace Edgar
…possibly Zaki to replace Owen

Comment #82perhaps JFK can do ‘a harry’ and bring in a few older heads that can galvanise the team with experience and spirit ( think like campbell, james, distin)
Any suggestions as to the kind of player I mean – players who may be overlooked by others.
I for one think Riise would be a shrewd buy… and what about Sissoko?

Comment #86Pretty sure Bruce has said he rates Valencia and Palacios at over £15m each. Both would be great for Newcastle though,

Out of all the players i have named, Cattermole would be the best buy. We need a DM with technical ability desperately. His commitment is also second to none, he is as committed as Butt, but without the 35yr old legs.

Comment #89How old is Cattermole? I always think of him as a good championship player… so at our current rate maybe he would be a good investment.

Comment #93we need an everton win here or its back to the relegation places for us 🙁
so gutting when we get a fantastic result and then everyone else around us matches or beats it and we end up in the bottom 3. fair enough its close but it just feels and looks like all the hard work is undone

Comment #97It’s harsh to think we could/should have collected 2 extra points against everton/city and wigan. And at least something at Fulham.
But we didn’t, all the other clubs around us seem to be able to get all the 3 points alot easier than we can.

Comment #98Yeah toony yer right there mate, you can’t call a spade a spade anymore otherwise you get it in the neck.
We should be proud to be British not scared. I don’t mean that in a racist manner, just you can’t fly yer flag now etc.
It’s a shock to see the Irish tricolour flying in Britain(sunderlab) when we can’t fly the flag of the country we are in! Them dozy makkems probably take St Patricks day off as another bank holiday.
Anyway u sound like a gangster to me wiv that name.

Comment #100please please please dont let us sell shay i would rather owen go, shay has been our best player for the last few years !!!
If my memory serves me right the rumour has it the reason the milner sale was sanctioned was because the board had schweinsteger lined up to replace him only for him to say he did not want to come to us.
I think of all the areas where we are crying out for a player is attacking midfield, when Barton was playing it was so refreshing to see someone storming in when the opposition cleared from defence and having a pop from the edge of the area. Jimmy Bullard would be an ace signing if we could get him experienced, good at set plays, works his socks off and an international.
One last point for my rant, someone has to work on our set plays the amount of times our corners dont clear the first men is ridiculous and an absolute joke
Bullard could help out here too…

Lee Cattermole is better than all our CM’s apart from Barton. Where does this delusion come from that we are too good for the likes of Cattermole? Our current side is poor and right now i would take a straight swap with Wigans.

could agree more mate. Like you, i do not mean to be racist in any way at all but its a sad day when you cant fly the flag of your country without others accusing you of trying to cause offence or provoke them.
Rangers fans take abuse when they carry union jacks to ANY of the spl grounds it seems, naturally celtic especially. No other team in the spl however has the connections or rivalry rangers do with celtic, yet all the other clubs will give the same argument, when its not really anything to do with them.
The whole situation is pretty pathetic, but its a fact of life these days it seems.

Comment #106Ross well put mate- here is a taster from follow follow.——
A Glasgow Rangers Union Jack in the West Ham end yesterday was removed by stewards because it was winding up the sunderland fans in the adjacent corner next to the away support and was deemed it could incite violence. That was the official reason given anyway. Was told this in my local last night by a lad who had the unfortunate job of being a steward there yesterday and sure enough after checking sunderlands main messageboard its true.
Think they’re taking all this fake Oirishness a bit too far now mind.

Comment #112I agree with all regarding the Bullard comments. I’d love him at Newcastle, set pieces are a real weakness of ours and he’s a dead ball specialist, he would be a brilliant aquisition. sad fact is he just wont come.
Cotton-its canny pathetic. Even if west ham fans did take a rangers orientated union jack to try and poke fun at them, they surely shouldnt have reacted anyway, because its not like sunderland houses some sort of irish stronghold. Complete madness, like i’ve said earlier its jumping on a bandwagon. Its like shearer going to manage Swindon town, and all of a sudden every single one of them decide to despise sunderland because he’s a geordie, it’s just silly and shouldnt happen.

Comment #113nick – Just got back from the reserve match. I’m not surprised they’ve done that. They’ve went from carving ‘UVF’ and ‘F**k the Pope’ into pool tables to a persecution complex that most Irish Catholics have. It’s hilarious and I wouldn’t think much of it mate, if Keano goes they’ll probably switch back.

Comment #1142155: FULL-TIME: Wigan 1-0 Everton
Lusty blast on the whistle from Rob Styles as Cahill holds his head in his hands and Wigan record their second home win of the season, moving out of the bottom three and into 15th place in the Premier League table. Newcastle drop into the relegation zone as a result.

Comment #117Just finished watching Wigan-Everton… a couple of things.
A) I have not seen Everton so poor in a long long time. They lack quality and commitment.
B) Steve Bruce’s side impress me. Lots of very handy players in there, and play really well as a unit. He has done well down there and I am beginning to quietly hope for him as our new permanent manager, perhaps from next summer.
