Oba Wants Two Successive Wins – Defense Critical To That

Oba Martins wants wins against Middlesbrough and Stoke City, over the next two games, so the Magpies can start climbing that league table, in what is a fairly wide open Premier League this season.

Oba Martins – wants two wins on the trot

Oba told the Evening Chronicle today:

“All we need to do is win a couple of games in succession.” “And if we can do that in our next two now, we will move up the table, I am sure.”

“Six points takes you a long way in this division.” “You can go from being in the relegation area to near the teams challenging for Europe. It’s crazy, but that is the Premier League this season, so we still have so much to play for.”

“We are starting to improve in defense and we try hard not to concede any goals.” “We have proved that we can do it against one of the best teams in the world.”

“Not many teams will go to Chelsea and do that.” “You could go there and concede four or five goals.” “Now we have kept a clean sheet against a top team.”

“The aim now is to do it again and again.” “When you play against the best teams, you just have to help each other.”

“We showed we were a team.” “Sometimes it isn’t just about scoring goals, you have to drop back and help your team-mates.

“You need to close opponents down and stop them coming at you.” “We had the mentality that we couldn’t even concede one goal at Chelsea, and that worked.”

Probably the biggest key to Newcastle climbing up the league is our defense, and that’s why it was so pleasing to see Seb Bassong give such an accomplished and mature display at Chelsea.

And for sure Joe Kinnear will attempt to strengthen the defense in January, as he tries to bring in center-back Christopher Samba from Blackburn, and either Stephen Warnock of Blackburn, or John Arne Riise of Roma, to the Tyneside club.

But if we are going to start picking up wins we will need another strong performance from our defense on Saturday, and if we can do that – 3 points are possible, even if the score ends up at just 1-0.

All we want is all 3 points.

Seb is my new favourite newcastle player, even before the chelsea game I made him on the 07/08 pro evo, he’s a legend, and should play week in week out. Martins is my ultimate favourite though, with gutierrez second and seb and beye joint third. We do have some fantastic players, just up until the chelsea game we haven’t worked as a team. Now what needs to happen for the boro’ game is that we have to learn from the chelsea game and bring it into the next, however whether it’ll happen with us being newcastle who knows.

All we need to do now is consolidate the Chelski performance, with the attack getting a bit of a look in.

If we can follow up last weeks draw with a win at the smoggies followed by another win at home, we will move several places up the league and leave the scum behind us in the bottom three!!!!

  • Its hilarious watching Sunderland do worse with better players. Bigger laugh if they are relegated with players like Cisse and Malbranque they expected Uefa Cup 😆 Boro away is a hard game but Bolton won there so if the attitude is right we can win and against Stoke dont give away any throw ins 😀

Defense .. what about attack as well .. we’re crying out for an good attacking midfielder, never mind the obvious defensive midfielder to replace butt as well as LB and CB .. add a good striker in the mix to replace duke ..

Ashley splash the cash .. but I don’t expect him to put any money in as its obvious he’s not gonna run this club properly.

What are you talking about? Bassong’s already a legend as no. 46! 😀

And it’s a Carrick-type DM we need. That would give us a good solid central midfield that would allow our wingers to roam a bit more and be free to really attack the penalty area, with fullbacks continuing to provide the width whether the wingers venture inside or not.

Isn’t it funny that Oba is saying all these positives things & his bloody strike partner is meant to be our captain saying sweet FA! really hope that JFK sticks with Bassong & Colo as Taylor has no right to walk back in to that defence! would love Warnock & Samba in Jan. Raid on Blackburn may be good lets go for McCarthy as well! good striker especially if we lose Owen.

Why do w need Samba? Bassong deserves his starting place & Taylor is good enough cover. The only logic i can see for buying Samba is moving Colo to DM and having Samba partner Bassong, but even that is a stretch.

Obvious but good comments Oba – I’m in full agreeance!!

I think JFK is the kind of boss to stick with the team from Saturday.
Bassong and Colo looked strong together and I’m sure if we can keep it as tight against the Boro, we have the ability to get them on the break once or twice.

I think Southgate will play Mido and Sanli as Alves hasn’t been up to much recently – and last season he caused our backline a few probs with his strength.

Hopefully Viduka will get a run out as I always fancy returning players getting on the score sheet.

If we are talking transfer business, how about we offer Blackburn Duff and Owen for a swap for Warnock & Gamst Pedderson (IMO the most underated player in the league)? Owen is away in Summer anyway, and Duff is past his sell by date. BTW if anybody offers money for Cacapa I will gladly do a Naked lap round St Jame’s on matchday, lets face it, it aint gonna happen.

Ok maybe i overused the phrase legend! but all i mean is anyone who puts on the shirt and plays with as much energy and passion as he did on saturday desserves the word i say.
Taylor half does it, he does run but he’s more an actor than a defender, makes everything look hollywood, whereas bassong has all the right beliefs, if in doubt knock it out, and just put pressure on whenever you can, it all adds up.

Oba’s right – it looks terrible if you just look at the table, but if you look at our recent form and gradual improvement, it’s hard not to be optimistic.

I think we’ll get the 6 points, too.

Viduka returning could be huge for us. I know he’s an old crock, but he can make games for us – especially with Owen and Oba either side of him, and the likes of Jonas to feed the ball in. Even Enrique has shown the odd bit of brilliance with a high cross.

    C’maaaaaaaaan…

G – Gamst Pederson has been crap for 3 seasons and I mean very crap.

I’d buy Hossam Ghaly from Spurs for cheap.

    He could replace Butt easily.

Tom_Toon, we will have to agree to disagree, I know it seems he has only had one decent season in UK, however, for me if you unleash the shackles of playing in a defensively minded team and deploy him on his natural wide left possition he is one of the most creative players around… what do the Toon lack more than anything?… creativity (ok, and a decent owner, transfer budget, trophy and all of that other malarkey!).

    Cheers

It’s not about playing in a defensive team. Pedersen used to have very good delivery which is clearly missing in his game these days. Set-pieces were his strength and he is nothing without that.

Hossam Ghaly is up there with Gallas, Chimbonda and Anelka. Not ability though. Strange that he isn’t even french but he sulks just as much.

Delph is lightweight and 5ft 7 but a very nice player, not a DM by any stretch though.

Hossam Ghaly is cheap, agressive, has prem experience and good.
