Newcastle Interested In German International Left-Back

Newcastle are said to be interested in Wolfsburg 24 year-old defender Marcel Schafer, in an attempt to solve their left sided defensive weakness.

Marcel Schafer – 6 foot 24 year-old German defender

But Newcastle have also been reported to be interested in bringing John Arne Riise from Roma, initially on loan, and are also said to be tracking Blackburn’s former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock.

But there is little chance Blackburn, who are below Newcastle in the league, will agree to let Stephen go in January, and Roma may elect to keep Riise, who has recently regained his first team starting place.

Marcel Schafer is a 24 year-old German, who has played 42 times for Wolfsburg since moving there from 1860 München in 2007. He played 91 times for 1860 München, after he joined them in 2003.

He scored 3 goals for 1860 München and has scored 6 goals so far for 1860 München, and he stands over 6’ tall.

Marcel has a single cap for Germany, which he received in their last game, on November 19th, 2008 in the 2-1 defeat to England.

havent seen much of him either. i say much, i havent seen anything of him apart from the England game, and i cant really remember that if i’m honest.
however ELFER, i would say that in my view the bundesliga is the closest thing to the prem so if he performs in Germany, i wouldnt think he should have too much of a problem stepping up to the PL?

Can’t really go wrong being interested in a young German international, they generally have the right attitude and a winning mentality, plus he would add some extra height which would be useful on set plays both defensively and attacking.

Taiwo lacks skill, sure he can ping a ball in pretty hard but he’s not so good at defensive duties. I still think we should go in for Warnock, much more solid and reliable.

However I think the bundesliga is an untapped resource for many EPL clubs. It’s a pretty high standard, you only have to look at the german team and see how many of them play in it to realise that.

Anyone would do the job better than Jose, he’s the weakest link in our side along with Butt…

Any LB is welcome cause that is the position we need to strengthen ASAP!

    But I’m not that sure about the upcoming transfer window;
    1. Kinnear his style of football shows that he will go for not that much of creativity (which we totally lack).
    2. Kinnear has been promised to have a full say of who comes and who goes, but did the fat man not promise something on a few occassions in the past, and what happenned to those promises???

We need to strengthen the squad but I don’t know at all what to expect in January.

Its a shame bassong is so good in the centre, because he would make a decent left back! oh the irony. Left back is the most urgent problem in Jan window, some creative midfeilders too, as we are relying too much on Spiderman, wen he has a poor game the team does also, the dependence is too much, Suprisingly missed duffer today? hmmm, one good attacking central midfeilder to replace the void left by emre would be nice aswell.

I think Newcastle should stick with Jose Enrique because he is young, still learning his trade and is improving every week. I will be very disappointed if he should go because he always looks to play the ball out of defence rather than a hefty boot to the opposition. He is over 6′, strong, quick and has an excellent left foot.
I believe that Enrique has a great future – leave him at left back.

KK FOREVER and Matt – Totally agree, I watch the Bundesliga a fair bit and it is the closest league to the prem in physicality and also very fast and it is not utilised enough by prem teams.

I have not seem Schafer that much but he has impressed me when I have seen him, so have his team Wolfsburg.

I’d take him over Warnock and he is a lot better than Riise.

Thin we should start martin on the left wing, becouse Zoggy (suprisingly) didn’t look as he can regain his starting place…duff will go straight back into startin 11 I think.

MO didn’t have a good game today…I have the opinion that he is more and more a playmaker with predator skills. Maybe we should play him in offensive midfield role just behind duke?

On Taiwo, sure he can striker a ball, not consistently though I might add, he has a temper, would cost way too much (overrated to the hilt) and cant really defend.

tom_toon-that was my line of thinking also. The Bundesliga is physical, and its clear to see from the national team that so are their players.
As has also been mentioned previously the Germans seem to have a winning mentality and a good attitude towards the game.
I’ve never been Riise’s biggest fan, and i dont think warnock would be much of an improvement on what we already have if im honest.
However, this is all just speculation. i’d love to beleive that Kinnear has the full backing of Ashley and co come Jan but we’ve heard it all before.

I have a feeling that oba and viduka would be a strong strike force if only they understood each other.owen should either be sold for 6-10 million or used as a supersub or converted to a am.he is of no use to me

Why not just get rid of Michael Owen ?
Along with his horses, golf clubs, helicopter and massive salary.
Would he really be that much of a miss to Newcastle United ?
Do you not think he is just one big freeloader, happy to take the money, withoout any real commitment to the club ?

This guy would be a good signing , i see a lot of German football and have seen this lad play a few times . He is a solid defender can tackle and reads the game well . Going forward he is no speed merchant but does have a good cross and will cause problems . He will walk straight into the team ahead of Jose .

We do need a LB to provide competition for Enrique, but we shouldn’t dump Enrique though. He had a poor game today but was good against Chelsea. He just needs to make charging runs forward more often and not just boot it.

i agree Spyro , there is no need to dump Enrique he is young and will develop in to a top class defender . His and the teams problem is he has no competition for his place .

tom_toon-i’ve seen alves play a few times and havent been overly impressed. the only game i sat down and watched properly thinking he had a good game, was maybe a month or so ago, against almeria i think and barca were 4-0 up at half time, so that shows you how much defending he actually had to do. scored a screamer of a free kick i think though.

No Ryan, Alves is an average right-sided midfielder, some distance from the best right back in the world.

The Premier League has some of the best right backs, and the three Bs are well up there: Belletti, Bosingwa and Beye!
