Newcastle United’s great goalkeeper Shay Given, who was signed by Kenny Dalglish for just £1.5M in the summer of 1997 from Blackburn Rovers, hopes to win a new contract at Newcastle, and be part of the good times he thinks are ahead for the club.
Shay Given – wants to win new contract at Newcastle United
The Ireland international has been at St James’ Park for over 11 years but his contract runs out next summer.
The 32-year-old of course wants to stay at the club, and we’re sure Newcastle will want to sign the Irishman for at least the next 4 years, since he’s in his best form ever for the club this season.
Shay’s had terrible groin problems over the last two years but top German surgeon Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck operated on Given last March in her Munich clinic, and cleared up any lingering doubts about Shay’s groin problems.
Shay says he is ready to do his best under new manager Joe Kinnear and is obviously pleased a little bit of stability is back to the club, if only through the end of the season:
“When it goes bad it is horrific but when it goes well it really takes off. You get the whole place rocking,” “We’ve been in the Champions League before and finished third, fourth and fifth in the Premier League.”
“There is definitely the potential to get us back up there.” “Joe Kinnear has come into a very difficult situation and he deserves a lot of credit. He’s got the boys behind him.”
“If you’re not pulling your socks up he will tell you and as a player you like that. You want honesty. He gives you that. I think my future is here, unless someone tells me different.”
“Hopefully the club will start moving forward again in the coming months and I would love to be part of that.”
Shay has to be one of the best players ever to play for the Newcastle club, let’s face it, and he’s certainly the best goalkeeper the club has ever had.
We have a feeling there’s still a lot to come from the star Irishman, who just yearns to win something at Newcastle.
Shay’s been a wonderful servant to the club, he defines what loyalty really means, and is a fantastic role model for our younger supporters.
Let’s get his new contract signed quickly, that’s something Mike Ashley can facilitate – but sooner rather than later.
It’s the very least Shay deserves.

Is Kinnear going to say that to Owen after yesterday’s game?
Well this is some fantastic news that Given wants to stay and move forward with NUFC. If only the fat man is willing to do good for this club, then we could go into lots of better times.

Comment #6As a Newcastle fan who moved out to Belfast this year, I can honestly say that Shay Given is the only reason I don’t get lynched for wearing my shirt to watch the game in the pub!
The man is an absaloute legend, great keeper, great team player and the fact that him, his wife and his kids all seem so settled in the N/E is testament to what a good partnership this club can have with it’s players!

Comment #8Don’t know what was wrong with Owen yesterday. He seemed either unfit or severely dischuffed about something (tactics? teammates? contract? England? his impending sale? or his club in a right old mess?) . However, if he won’t sign a new contract (if he’s to be offered one) we should make Given the team captain pronto. He would absolutely love the honour, deserves it and would represent it proudlyl. I’m not convinced about the ‘midfielder for captain’ platitude trotted out by Andy Gray. If Given is captain. it won’t stop Nicky Butt from kicking butt, or Coloccini delivering an earful to Enrique for giving the ball away. Nor should it.
Shay for Captain!
