Kinnear Will Improve Squad Even With No Funds

Joe Kinnear will strengthen the squad in January, whether he gets additional funds from Mike Ashley or not.

Sol Campbell – target for Kinnear?

The players he seems to be chasing in Holland, left-backs Urby Emanuelson (Ajax) and Tim De Cler (Feyenoord), and PSV Eindhoven’s Dirk Marcellis, would all improve our squad.

But we’d be surprised if there is much money thrown around by clubs in January, except possibly Manchester City who seem determined to pay outlandish fees for some world class trophy signings.  Does anybody think Brazilian Robinho was worth £32M?

Sol Campbell, who is a player even Glenn Roeder was after, may be the additional central defender picked up in January, and Sol would be a good buy for more than a few reasons.

He has great experience and could help improve our youngsters like Steven Taylor and Sebastien Bassong, as well as 18 year-old up and coming Hungarian center-back Tamas Kadar, who is looking good in the Reserves.

He is also more than useful in central defense of course, and the reports suggest he is available for around £500K, with new manager Tony Adams tempted to sell.

We do expect Claudio Cacapa and even David Edgar to be shipped out, so bringing in Sol Campbell would be a good move and we’d have Campbell, Colloccini, Bassong and Taylor to fight it out for the two central defense positions.

We also need a left-back to challenge Jose Enrique, who sometimes seems all at sea when he’s playing. That’s all we really need for the defense because Steven Taylor can back up Beye at right back, so our defense would be quite good, and of course the lads are playing great at the moment, with Bassong looking terrific. What a buy!!

Whatever happens we think Joe has some good players targeted, and we’ll have to hope he can get them into the club, and those he wants to sell – that Dennis Wise can do the job there too.

It promises to be an interesting and exciting January for Newcastle fans – which is very good after all the hassle of the last few months.
Comments very welcome.

Fingers crossed he gets it right – money or not!

As far as Joe’s assurances from the Board are concerned, didn’t MA say that KK had total control of first team comings and goings as well?

While i agree FULLY that Edgar & Cacapa are NOT good enough…. The only reason Sol Cambell would be a good signing,is the fact that he is varstly experienced & would deff be able to teach our youngsters a couple things BUT i agree with broone ale… The negatives(Age,pace, fitness, salary) far outway the positives(Experience)

Even thinking about anything other than finding a central attacking midfielder who can score goals is fairly stupid. I’m sorry to harp on about this but we have 1 goal from a midfielder – Duff at Everton – all season and he was playing up front with Owen that day.

Why the hell do we want Campbell? How are we going to accommodate the 3 strong players we have now in that position.. we have cover besides that if needs be…. blah blah squad game yada, yada…. I know.

Sorry to go back to it … but JK taking off Oba!?!?!?!?!?!?
    1) January window coming up… dishearten the club’s single most valuable asset for the sake of a 33 year old and the want-away Owen.

    2) Boro couldn’t do nowt against us – where were our balls in going for the win? Has no one told JK about how the 4-3-3 saved us under KK last season… boro would have bricked it with those 3 up front? Why were we hanging on for a ‘creditable – blah blah – point’… is 17th creditable? We need wins… anyone watching that game could see how bravery on our part would have seen us take the spoils… that was the game to take off Guti… he was nervy all game.

although hes gettin on, for 500k sol campbell would be a decent signing, hes better than taylor anyway, and i doubt his wages would be all that high at this stage of his career, could be a decent short term solution, i know our defence has been good the last couple of games but people get far too carried away after a couple of good performances, i mean a month or so ago most people wanted another CB to partner colo, now all of a sudden we dont cos of 2 good games

It will be very interesting to see who leaves in January. I don’t expect Owen to extend his contract while expect Spurs to come in for Shay Given as they are desperate for a keeper…..

By offloading the likes of Smith, Cacapa, Edgar, and maybe Ameobi, JFK can use the funds to strengthen the squad in the right places!

Ryan Peacock… I keep hearing this.. we need a striker. Please talk me through this one…
we have the 3 obvious big guns- and so far JK hasn’t shown that he has the balls to play KK’s favoured 4-3-3..
We have Shola who is a willing and able understudy with a nifty goals record- to to mention content to remain on the margins. We have the young Xisco – who has started 4 games and hasn’t been given anything like the chance to show us what he’s about… Smith coming back… Ranger progressing nicely….
7 strikers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Explain to me how you suggest the need for another one… if you say big target man I will f****g explode you parrot.

I’d like to think against Stoke we can play our game and not worry about theirs.

Start with 3 up top and take it to them.

    Given
    Beye Colo Bassong Enrique
    Jonas Butt N’Zogbia
    Owen
    Martins Viduka

I think there’s more than enough to put Stoke to bed here – and god knows – it’d be great to give someone a spanking.

Also in Jan I’d like to see:

A new centre back for cover
A new first choice left back
    Right back cover
    A creative centre mid

    Also out with:
    Smith Cacapa Geremi

While on the subhect of old eperience and shipping out those not good enough, can anyone tell me what David Edgar has done wrong when he’s played at LB for us?
I can remember a couple of sterling performances (including a slightly fortunate goal against ManU) but can’t remember seeing Edgar drop any major clangers. Perhaps in the reserves he doesn’t look Prem quality but isn’t that what Hughton’s just been saying about Bassong? – sometimes you stick them in because you have to and they surprise you.
Perhaps Edgar isn’t up to scratch. I haven’t seen enough to be certain but given all the second chances dished out to Luque, Barton, Cacapa, bramble and everyone else, I just thought I’d ask on Edgar’s behalf.
… Feel free to put me right sharpish.

Agree Sav, I have long been impressed by young Edgar and he has been used as a scapegoat when we were struggling with injuries. He is NOT a RB, thats for sure he’s been a CB since he was 13 thats 8 years but was used as cover for Beye at RB. It was plain to see he was playing like a CB at RB and with absolutely no cover from midfield, well Geremi for what use he is?

The kid has been carrying a hamstring injury when he has played those few games and asked to come off around 60 mins in one game. I watch the reserves and he has impressed me for seasons and against Liverpool reserves last Monday the opposition rated him motm. The grief the kid has received is unjust and unfair imo and the sooner he leaves the better for him but he loves Newcastle and obviously wants to stay. By the way Roeder never wanted him and was just just taking the piss over that alleged loan deal as he doesnt like him. I wish Ed all the best and hope he leaves in Summer !!

I would rather we played edgar at left back then enrique! I was there thatr day when he scored against man utd and evryone seems to forget how well he marshalled a certain cristiano ronaldo!

    It sounds like i have an agender agianst enrique…unfortunately i do because he is terrible and evrytime he gets the ball i expect two things;

    1. a long punt up field to nobody!

    2. a misplaced pass to a member of the opposition!

KK knew this…Now the majority of the fans know this! We desperately need a left back/ ****A CREATIVE CENTRAL MIDFIELD PLAYER*** & I would offload Smith, Owen and Xisco to bring in Kevin Doyle

We’ve got the centre-back thing covered. End of. Likewise strikers.

Someone made a good point about midfielders that can score, and I think that key player, plus a decent left-back, is all we need worry about unless some gooduns decide to leave. Other positions can be built up from ‘promising youngters’ which we’re aquiring steadily.

One more point: Was anyone else crying out for a decent dead-ball man when Butt stepped up for that free kick? He didn’t miss by much but it was so slow and lacking in bend that Stephen Hawking could have saved it.

If we get the LB and AM types, we must ensure that one of them can take a killer free kick.

Well we need a LB, and 1 midfielder.
We do not need a center back. If two are injured wich is probably never going to happen Edgar or maybe even Kadar can play.
We may need a backup RW
I don’t want anybody out. Maybe Cacapa. But Smith is a good backup, Ameobi also, Owen is a top striker but a poor team player. Why is our captain running out of contract ?
And why keep ppl forgetting that Geremi is one of the most versatile player in the game.
He can cover up RB, LB, RW, CM. Great backup.

    Given
    Beye-Colo-Bassong-Enrique
    Butt
    Jonas-Zog
    Owen
    Martins-Viduka

Come on this formation is deadly. Now Enrique can bomb the ball forward and somebody can get to it.

    Peace from Iceland

I’d be happy to strengthen the squad in all areas, but for me the priorities have to be a second left back and some attack in the midfield. We have more than enough in CB and plenty of strikers to choose from.

I really do hope Kinnear has the nuts to play the 4-3-1-2 we were using last season as well. I think it’s the best possible option for the payers we have.

Shearbliss – I have the same nervousness about all this speculation as you do. I was all over these blogs in August when I thought (foolishly) Mr Ashley might be about to surprise us with a couple of new signings.

Now, I’m not saying Colo, Guthrie, Bassong and Jonas aren’t good players – they are. But who we have to thank for that I don’t know. It certainly wasn’t JK though, as he wasn’t here then. And given that our then manager (KK) said repeatedly that we needed a LB and cover at RB, as well as more guile in midfield…well, we didn’t get any of that and my have we suffered with Enrique and no flair in te middle since!

So do I trust the words from JK? Not really. Do I think we’ll spend wadges of cash? Not at all. Do I think we might make a few neat deals? I hope so, but I doubt that they will startle us. I expect some players we want to keep will go and some more who may be OK will come in.

What we need is to keep the current squad (excepting Cacapa and Enrique who are becoming liabilities), and add a new LB, cover at RB and extra firepower in the middle.

it would be unbelievable if we got Marcellis the lad is pure class even at such a young age , I really do not believe PSV would sell . Emanuelson would also be a very good signing and there is more chance we could get him with a big offer . As for DeCler no thanks he would be lost in the premiership he is not good enough and Campbell would cost too much in wages we could do better than him for the wages he would want .

A young right back wouldn’t be bad either, as I feel with targeting youth (like were suppose to be doing?) it’s better to get someone with potential in now, getting playing the odd game and have him there to naturally replace (or help out beye) when the time comes.

makes a lot more sense than our usual, wait till a players old, and desperately needs replacing, then splash some cash on a big name flop system we’ve seemed to go with in the past.

On Campbell, I think when pompey first took him on, he was still a good signing, and at that time I had hoped he’d come to us.

But since watching him a few times last season, ball watching and looking a bit lost chasing shaows in certain games I think he’s well past it, and not worth bringing in,

on the cheap yeah, but would demand a large wage package that would not be even close to value for money.

don’t think he’d play any games either, unless the 3 now better CM we have are injured.
