Newcastle Reported After Leighton Baines

The People reported yesterday that Newcastle United want to sign Everton left full-back Leighton Baines on loan.

Leighton Baines – looks good in b/w – Joe Kinnear interested?

A year last summer Newcastle may have been interested in Leighton Baines who at that time was still at Wigan Athletic, but his name kept coming up as a potential Newcastle target for Sam Allardyce.

The 5’8″ Kirkby-born player eventually went to Everton for a rather high £5M fee, but has not been able to gain a regular place in the side, but has still played over 30 times for Everton, having played close to 150 times for Wigan Athletic.

He also played for the England Under-21 side with Steven Taylor, and we think he would be an excellent signing for the club. He played 16 times for the England Under-21 side, scoring a single goal.

Reports suggest he would only be willing to come to Newcastle United on a permanent deal, so maybe an offer around £3M may be able to sway Everton to part with Leighton, who would be more than willing to come to the north-east.

We could even suggest a straight swap deal with Everton – Leighton Baines for Alan Smith.

Leighton turns 24 in December, and was Everton’s best player when we drew 2-2 at Goodison Park earlier this season, in Joe’s first game in charge.

Sign him Joe.

What do you think? Comments very welcome.

Baines is a good little player, definitely better than Warnock IMO.

Pay Everton to take Smith off our hands!

If we can swap him for Smith we should go for it. With injuries mounting at Everton they are in need of strikers and if we can get smithy moving before the end of january I wouldn’t be suprised to see a swap. In fact I would be stoked as I’d rather have Ranger, Carroll and even Shola playing in front of him

In order to make a swap happen we’d have to pay Everton their full valuation for Baines and perhaps a little more to take Smith off our hands. That’s a good deal in my eyes though, Smith is a waste of space on ridicilous wages.

Ausgeordie, I’d hardly call Smith a striker. The man hasn’t scored in the PL since nov 2005 🙂

I think he would be a great signing when you look at what we have at LB. A deal using Smith would be perfect if that would come off, get him of loaded as he has never done it for us and a good left back in to improve the squad and the fight for places.

With money being tight, if we could pull off a swap deal and with whatever else we have or can generate, I would go for Campbell if he was a cheap as £500k as he would alos instill fight for places, means we could easily lose Cacapa as he would replace him and would help Seb & Taylor to improve.

Look long term and offer a coaching role. The other signing I would go for who could be fairly cheap would be Heskey, just not sure if he would want to come to us. Viduka I think is finshed, he could replace him, plays so well with Owen and I’m sure if JK would do it, would be ideal for a 3 man attack. I’m not saying Xisco should be written off, but I haven’t been impressed with what I’ve seen, I know not much, but JK doesnt seem like he will give him a go either, he was playing Shola over him when he was fit.

As for a CM I’m not sure who is out there and what we could afford.

Spyro m8…signing baines would not be good competition for enrique! If we signed him then he would go straight into the first team and i think that would be the end of jose at newcastle!

ED….5 million a little costly for baines????? What do you make of the 6 million we paid for enrique????

I think buying baines…an english player with premiership experience would have been a far better option for fat sam than jose! In all honesty i wanted jose to suceed! I really did; but he has been here almost a season and a half now and he is simply not good enough! We cant say he hasnt had a chance; he has had every chance and was awful on saturday. Whenever i travel to the away games we try and encourage and cheer him on best we can but it ids getting harder and harder to do so; whilst in a black & white shirt i will always encourage; but not good enough…Please sign leighton up asap; or warnock…!!! I will be happy with either (both would be great ;tongue in cheeck 🙂 )

I only mentiond Heskey as there is ‘paper talk’ of him maybe being available same as Campbell. As for the other players I mentioned, who knows if they could be boght/loaned. Looks like we will have no cash or next to nothing, so we shouldn’t get our hopes up.

I think Enrique needs more time. I also believe he is under instructions to just boot the ball. I say this because when he makes charging runs forward he look a very good player. However, this only happens once or twice in each match.
Enrique has shown enough to at least be a back up LB.

I would go for Baines and Campbell too. However, we must unload Smith onto some other club surely. I do not like Joe’s hints that Smith may come good at NUFC though. Also once again the media are trying to flog Michael Owen again.

I have seen a few comments along the lines of “why would Ashley invest if he is only going to sell up”

The answer is simple if he spends the money wisely it is effectively spending someone elses money… he will say the club price is x million for the club + this what I just paid to improve the playing squad. Or he will take out a loan secured on the business…

But I don’t think he would spend his own money…

That makes sence to me anyway!

Baines for Smith would suit both players and clubs. As for Heskey if we could somehow get him then we would see the best of Owen as he goes missing alongside a small partner. Owen needs a targetman to play off. Cambell would also be a great signing as his experience would benefit Taylor,Kadar and Bassong.

Ok, more paper talk to get us salivating. When will we learn eh?
    Anyway I’ll play.

Baines would be an excellent buy, I’ve been a fan of his for over a year now.
We should also go back for Barnes from Derby.
Forget all the talk on here about going for Ebankes Blake or Knightly from Wolves. Unless they don’t get promoted, highly unlikely they will stay with Wolves. If Wolves don’t get promoted they have a lot of really good, young players that I would really like to see at NUFC.

Kightly – Brilliant creative midfielder, but needs to look up more – remind you of Milner?
Ebankes Blake.- Could be the new Andy Cole.
Richard Steerman – Defender who likes to get forward. Really quick and can score goals. England U-21.

They also have Michael Mancienne who has been class for them since he came on loan from Chelsea. However he had a rubbish game on Saturday so may not be quite the finished article. Saying that he was called up to the full England squad, but would Chelsea let him go?

Henessey – Top, top keeper, but we have keepers covered and apparently Arsenal are after him.

I seriously would not want to get Wolves in an FA cup draw as I feel they would beat us. They are a very quick side. However their game against Birmingham on Saturday wasn’t their best display and it could show that they aren’t as good as they look against the rest of the Championship. Remember Birmingham are just about the same team that was relegated, so they are going to be strong. This may show that Wolves might not be able to hack it in the PL.

    Anyway enough wolves talk,, sorry.

I think Warnock will be a better signing. Warnock is versatile and can play in many positions, best thing is that, he is not as injury prone as Baines. If the club wants to sign players, at least sign somebody with better luck with injuries.

only if we can swap him for smith..and if we need money for transfers, maybe it’s time we cash in on taylor..he’s worth the same amount as miner (12m) and buy mancienne for 4m…then sign appiah… but i’d only sign heskey if we offload few strikers…ffs we’ve got 7 of them (viduka, owen, martins, shola, smith, carroll, xisco + ranger, zamblera)…

deffo worth that sort of cash, id maybe offer smithy and a mil. Ive lost faith with jose enrique after this weekends display, he isnt learning that he cant pass and yet still tries to…..and fails miserably. Everytime he got the ball on sat he lost it. Send him back to spain/ championship side on loan for a season, bring him back for one last chance and if no improvment ship him back permo. He aint good enough for Darlo at the moment never mind the mighty toon!!

no top player would consider newcastle at the moment unless they were toon supporters e.g. skjelbred
we will not spend money int he window….at least 1 top player will leave in january, probs given or owen or nzog
    joe kinnears a to$$er

Smith for Baines great bit of Biz! get rid of some deadwood too ie Caroll! he’s had his chance isn’t up to it just like chopra wasn’t, I would take Heskey and offer Owen a new deal he would thrive next to heskey! does heskey have as much ability as viduka? no! is he fit more? yes! I wouldn’t mind Realistic Buys speakin Koumas from Wigan, he is creative and would certainly come to the toon! not sure whether i’d rather have him or Elano? mind you i’d take Benyouin over both of em, just the type of player we need but would he come? are we big enough for him now? think koumas would be more realistic like and he could play left wing if we needed it through injury.

Not bad that like! Goals in the team too and with Koumas in side we’d be a threat from free kicks again! On another note Ed how did you mock that pic up? got some crackin players I could think of Mocking up!

Hi guys, i guess gettin baines is a good deal koz he was really good for wigan a couple of seasons ago, but am a little worried bout his injury record. I am one of smith’s biggest fan and anyone who watched him at leeds knows he’s more of a creator than a scorer. It would be a big mistake 2 sell him off koz he’s a far much better player than ameobi and he could be viduka’s natural successor next season. Plus smith did a great job as dm for man u n wen u count his good skills him and barton can make a great partneship in cm! Nway guys b realistic n reasonable in your assesment of players n remember class (smith, owen) is permanent and form (ameobi, ? ) is temporary! Magpie 4 life.

smith’s the worst player ever in NUFC shirt.. everytime he played we lost, he just ran after the ball, fouled the opponents with the ball, bullied them and was always talking back the the ref…i’d terminate his contract..
