Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear today has said that it is just not true that he must sell before he can buy in January.
Joe Kinnear – yes! I’ve got funds available in January!
Well, we assume Joe knows what he’s talking about even through the Sunday Express on Sunday said while that’s what Joe was saying, their information was that no money would be made available.
We assume the Sunday Express report is nonsense.
Transfer funds being made available is very good news for Newcastle supporters and Joe Kinnear, and even the players, who themselves want to see the squad strengthened in January.
Kinnear has already discussed next month’s transfer business with owner Mike Ashley – and he says there is no pressure to sell from the club’s Board.
Kinnear told the Sunderland Echo this morning that selling before he can buy is just not true:
“It’s not definitely the case.” “The only reason I’d move players out is if they wouldn’t be regulars in the first team. “
“In any case, I wouldn’t be thinking of moving anybody out until I got players in because of the injury situation we’ve got at the moment.”
“We’ve got quite a few players who are long-term injuries, so I definitely need to go out and get new faces in the next transfer window, and that’s what I intend to do.”
It certainly seems that Joe has a good relationship with Mike Ashley, as he does seem to have got Mike to dig into his pockets, which has to be very good for our club, and that’s the most important thing that matters, after all.
It promises to be an exciting January for Newcastle fans, and that makes a nice change from the atmosphere of the last three months at the club.
Howay The Lads!
Comments welcome.

Someone who can dribble, pass and score from midfield please! And a left-back to mirror the things that Beye does! And someone like Guthrie, but much much better to replace Butt.

Surprise surprise. I think we all seen this coming!
The press are trying to stir things again, I am glad I stopped buying that tosh years ago. Waste of paper, wouldn’t wipe my backside on the rags!
Good to hear we have funds available, as I say we have TRIED to spend money but deals just didn’t come off that’s all. We could have had Modric, Woodgate, Aimar etc but we just couldn’t attract them END OF.
So to say Ashley isn’t trying to bring in players is pretty ridiculous.

It’s about time ashley actually thought about making peace with the fans – just release a statement saying that for obvious reasons it has been impossible to find a suitable buyer and let’s begin the building he should have started over a year ago. Kinnear has shown he can stabilise the players, tighten the defence and he surely can spot a decent player with his time in the game. I for one took note of joe’s comment about how supporters would question keegan’s reasons for running when it eventually comes out, and I also still believe it is better to have a british based owner than foreign. Ashley has made mistakes, along with many many other football chairmen in the past – but it’s not impossible to bury this hatchet if the lines of communication are opened.

this is the same shit keegan was saying before the last window. i think its gonna be no different this time round either. ashley is a liar and can not be trusted, the man has zero crediability anymore. one thing is correct though, its gonna be very interesting in jan – for all the wrong reasons.

Ed- this article is bollox, ther is absolutely nothing official in it, and joe kinnear doesnt even say in those quotes that there is funds available, he says ‘its not definitely the case’ that he will have to sell, it doesnt say ‘its definitely not the case’ that he will have to sell, so imo what it says is that he doesnt really know wether he will ahve to sell or he will be given funds, but to state from those quotes that its officail we have money is ridiculous
13 Toon Graeme // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:28 PM
We will just have to sit back and wait and read loads of bulls locks about who we are linked with.

We’ve heard this all before. There was a repeat of the ‘irons in the fire’ talk again recently.
Yet again we’ll just have to wait and see (as we’re unlikely to get any other info beforehand).
15 keith // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:30 PM
i have to admit i would take that as jfk has money to spend, and why would he not? why would he keep coming out and say he has money to get players in if he hasnt?
16 John // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:31 PM
Joe Kinnear’s statement reads ” It’s not definitely the case” which is a million miles away from ” It’s definitely not the case”
17 Whumpie // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:34 PM
Let’s not forget that Ashley’s company is worth over half a billion less than it was six months ago. Given that he’s gone from billionnaire status to being worth just a couple of hundred mil, I don’t think we can assume he’ll have another £20m to throw around.
That said, he also knows that £20m on the right players could put £50m on the value of the club by the end of the season, so who knows?
18 Whumpie // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Good spot, John. I’d missed that, and I think Ed did too.
Damn. Totally different meaning.
19 AO // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Poor old joe could have 50 million burning a hole in his pocket but he would still fail to attract any top players to the club. Ashley wont pay the wages, kinnear isnt a top manager the footballers want to play for and who would want to get involved in a relegation scrap anyway?
I am afraid it will be players from the championship and unheard of average players from abroad. Contrast this with the amount of money Roy Keane will get and you can see why newcastle are the poor relations in the north east.
20 toonoholic // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:38 PM

ao your still not bitter joe turned down spurs in the mid 90s are you?
22 Nick 69 // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM
john- exactly my point mate, its nowhere near the same and him saying its not definitely the case, means he doesnt really know wether it is the case or not, as far as my memory serves me JK has never came out and said hes has money available, iv heard him say, if i find a suitable player i HOPE MA will make funds available to sign him. IMO he may fund one signing for 2-3mill and the rest will be loans or funds from players sold. if ashley turns round and says hes gonna give it another shot(although i would still hate to see that, but nothing i can do about it) then really he shud b investing the 20mil promised along with 12mil he pocketed from milner
23 bowburnmag // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Aye, canny spot John. Which implies if he doesn’t ship people out then it’s loans, loans, loans. Loans will rule the transfer market for a while in my opinion.
24 Nick 69 // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:45 PM
AO- average players from abroad, bit like the ones you signed in the summer for stupid money, modric flop of the season in the prem so far, pavlyuchenko and dos santos not far behind
25 Whumpie // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Disagree, AO. We are still a big brand, especially abroad. We’ve seen that the likes of Colloccini can be brought in, which no doubt involved big wages and something about the club that is still exciting to the player.
And let’s not forget that we’re only 8 points short of a European place, and have lost once in six games. A player wanting a big stage to prove himself on and who is perhaps not getting the starts where he is currently, could do a lot worse than get in front of the cameras at SJP.
26 Whumpie // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Nice one, Nick.
27 AO // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:53 PM
nick69-stupid comment really. Modric was quality under redknapp until he got injured. And pav has been scoring when he plays.Good goal against newcastle to knock you out of the cup.(we will be in the semis again by the way after tomorrow) Dos santos hasnt played under harry yet due to injury.
I sense a lot of jealousy but i can understand this due to your star signing being guthrie
Keith- you made a cock of yourself the other day and you have come up trumps today aswell. Kinnear has never been offered the spurs job. Its to big for him. Thats why he is bitter.
28 Micky Toon // Dec 2, 2008 at 1:59 PM
AO – I actually hope you are right. I would love to see some Championship players at NUFC, better than paying over the odds for players that don’t perform week in weekout.*ahem* Modric *cough* Bently *cough*
Players from championship to NUFC please –
From Wolves
Kightly (MF)
Ebankes Blake (CF)
Steerman (CB)
Vokes (CF)
Mancienne (cheating I know) (CF or LB can’t remember)
From Birmingham
Jaidi (CB)
Mc Sheffrey (MF)
Ridgewell (LB orRB?)
McFadden(FW)
From Reading
Kalifa Cissé (MF)(no not that Cisse, it’s someone else)
Stephen Hunt. (MF)
That’s the top three done, I can’t be bothered to go through the rest of the league, but if we got all or any of those I’d be happy.
We could probably do without all of the forwards I’ve mentioned, but I would want to get rid of Viduka and replace him with Ebankes Blake.
Also some more “unknown” foreigners like Bassong, Jonas and Colo wouldn’t go amiss either.
Anyway all speculation as we will have to just wait and see just as we did in the summer.
Chin up- At least we aren’t Sunderland ot Spurs. Just imagine being a supporter of a team that is in the crapper and their club is being ran to the best of their abilities. At least our club is a shower of sheet and that’s why we are in this mess.

AO – I always chuckle to myself when I speak to Spurs fans like yourselves. They have a chip on their shoulder against Newcastle ever since the likes of Scott Parker turned you down for us. It ignites the ‘our team is bigger than yours’ debate. For a club that ‘isnt that big’ we sure get alot of attention dont we? So much so that you have to come on here on your lunch break.
31 AO // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:04 PM
wayne0009- you offered better wages for modric than spurs. He must have joined us cos we are a smaller team thats going nowhere fast.
32 Nick 69 // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:06 PM
ao- definitely not jealous of spurs signings, 15m for modric, 16mil for bentley, OR 3mil for Jonas who has put them both to shame this season, as has guthrie so far who was only 2mil, so if you ask me who id rather have, guthrie and jonas for 5mil or modric and bentley for over 30mil then id take our 2 anyday of the week
33 Whumpie // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Ok, getting back to it and ignoring AO’s usual sh*te stirring…
I don’t know which way this will go. It doesn’t sound like JFK is any more likely to get spending power (funds or choice) than KK did. On the other hand, Ashley must know that he’ll only get his dosh back on the club if we get a decent finish this season. Which must be painful now that £20m is a big chunk of his net worth.
I spose we’ll know in a month or so. Until then we’ll have to put up with a few hundred more daft tabloid fabrications linking us to players who stand more chance of becoming pope than playing at SJP.
All I ask is that Ed makes his headlines and stories reflect the fact that these stories are always utter turbot dung.
34 AO // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Chris there is no debate when arguing who is the bigger more successful team. Obviously we are both biased but every fan in the country will tell you spurs are the biggest. |We have signed your best players over the years such as gazza, waddle and ginola and i think i am right in saying we have won a trophy every decade sine 1900.You havent won a thing since i was born. So please tell me why newcastle are a big club. And dont say loyal fans because when you were in div 1 you were averaging 15 thousand a week. Oh and we will have a bigger stadium than you in 2011 , even though size of stadia means nothing in my eyes.
over to you.

so we can sell:
harper – 2m
cacapa – 1m
geremi – 4m
butt – 1,5m
viduka – 2m
carroll – 1m
= 11,5 m, plus we’d save millions on wages with our biggest earners gone (owen, geremi, smith, viduka, butt,….)..we’d save approx 10m, so we’d have 20m to spent in the summer, and i’m sure wise could get us 3 top players and 5 top prospects for that ammount…

45 Chris // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:30 PM
AO – I’m not sure every fan in the country would! Steady on.
The low attendences figures were only for a few years and every club has its lean spells. I seem to recall Man Utd got a crowd of around 20,000 against Wimbledon in the eighties. I also remember Man City having 8,000 for a cup game. Funny how people never mention that we used to get crowds or 50,000-60000 in the fifties.
Trophies I cant argue with. But the last 15 years has definately put us in a high stature. 2 champions league campaigns and various UEFA campaigns (qualified through our league positions, something you have only managed once in the last 20 years) have definately done us no harm.
Christ when I see us at away games we are still category 1 in most Premier league clubs eyes.
Couple that with a media obsession with us (albeit a harmful one on most occasions) and you can see why big players are still attracted by the prospect of joining us. There is something special and romantic about this football club and once we actually win a fricking trophy it will make my argument much stronger.
46 AO // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:31 PM
nick69- we were in the european cup before it was rebranded. Football is about winning trophies mate and i am just pleased that i have seen my team win them. can you say the same?
Modric was playing great just behind bent before he was injured, Ramos was playing him out of position. \I say guthrie is your star man as he is the best of an average bunch. I suppose owe is your only decent player when fit but as i have said before he is off to spurs in january. (unfortunatly as he is now shite.)

54 Micky Toon // Dec 2, 2008 at 2:44 PM
Why does everyone give AO any time at all. It’s obvious he isn’t even wanted by “his own kind” as he would be on a spuds blog instead on on here. No doubt he’s been banned for talking crap all of the time.
Like I said earlier we are in a poor league position and have a poor season because of what happened in the summer. The likes of spurs and the makems, they are equal clubs in both stature and quality of support, are supposed to be being ran properly and to the best of the respective owners, chairmans and managers abilities. To me that says more about the quality they have at their clubs than anything that can be thown at NUFC.
Above all most NUFC fans aren’t deluded. We know we are crap. But we also know that it can be fixed with new owners and a new manager.
If it wasn’t for this global financial meltdown I know we would have had a new owner by now, but even the oil rich Arabs are being careful at the moment as the price of oil is going through the floor. So much so that an emergency meeting was held to discuss the situation.
Oh no I’ve just realised by saying that we ARE the new Wimbledon. Didn’t they used to sing “we’re sh*t and we know we are”?

Completetly off topic but has anyone cottoned onto the fact that the original Mido chants of him being a shoe bomber stemmed from the fact that he was a pretty good lookalike of Richard Reed (the original shoe bomber) and not because he was muslim. Is this lazy journalism? Surely not? No, its racist bile coming from Newcastle fans. I mean whoever was singing it in the first place should have known better but it seems to me that the press are jumping to conclusions too soon. Is chanting ‘You’re just a fat Eddie Murphy’ to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink racist or a humorous take on a lookalike??

Four reasons why I’m glad to be black and white and not a Spud:
1. One city, one team. Not one of an easily-forgotten bucketful.
2. Rather be doing badly but improving despite everything around us being crap (and fixable) than doing badly despite in theory having everything sorted.
3. Ask people around the world which club name they recognise – NUFC or Spuds. Obvious result as to how the rest of the world sees it.
4. Ask any manager which stadium they’d rather avoid playing at. Nothing – NOTHING – compares to SJP at full voice.

AO; I have a feeling you’ll get your wish and Given will be a Spurs player in January but at what price?
What’s he worth to you as we still have Steve Harper and two very good youngsters coming through the ranks……
I believe we’ll sell before we buy in January and Shay Given being a great goal keeper may need to be sacrificed
76 BT9MAG // Dec 2, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Here AO, Tom_Toon – I actually remember it…
Tom_Toon, you did actually mention Arda as a player to watch before Turkey’s first game….
HOWEVER
…After the impressive performance in that match you said his valuation would sky rocket and he wasn’t worth his subsequent valuation
Same with Arshavin and Modric
And AO – I assume you don’t watch many Newcastle games (possibly the highlights on MOTD) because if you did, you’d know that Jonas Gutierrez is easily one of the Premiership signings of the season – he works tirelessly, delivers great balls from the byline, but isn’t scared to run at defenders to get into a better passing decision, he is desceptively quick and a great tackler.
David Bentley (although good) is in my opinion overpriced and overhyped…English pundits desperate to find the new Beckham!
Therefore to choose to pay 5x times the price for a player of similar standard is ludicrous and shows a lack of business sense if not footballing knowledge!
I don’t think any Newcastle fan needs a Spurs fan to tell us we’re in the shit, we’re gunna struggle to attract and indeed pay for big names players and probably only scrape the edges of the top half again this season…although…isn’t that what you’ve been doing in the past couple of years aswell?

I will be glad if a new player signs a dealn whether it is on loan or permanent i don’t care as long as the player who is brought in adds someting to the squad (not like our 2 last minute deals in the summer, who have done zero for this club).
I truly hope that there will be no repeat of the summer, cause we were linked with fantastic players (also many players) and what happenned, we all (the most here on this blog) got carried away and were disappointed on 01 September.
91 todd // Dec 2, 2008 at 9:02 PM
Here come the wow signings. As in “wow, why didn’t they sign anyone?”
92 AndyNUFC // Dec 2, 2008 at 9:15 PM
REALISTICALLY if Ashley put the money towards it, we could sign both Elano and Benayoun. Now tell me an attack with Elano, Benayoun and Gutierrez doesn’t sound great?
We really do need some creativity flair and a spark in the midfield.
But I do agree we need to sort left back out first. Do not get rid of Enrique though, nobody but lower clubs will want him so he will be happy to be back up to a decent LB. I’d take Riise.
I’d also have an experienced centre back, Bassong has been terrific this season, but him and Taylor are only 22-23, so i’m thinking somebody strong next to Coloccini. (Really wish we hadn’t sold Faye).
93 micepie // Dec 2, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Those who talk of signing “average players” because we may not have large funds,,,well, wait and see. I can imagine that most fans were far happier when we signed Smith than when we signed Guthrie, for example. And more excited when we got Luque than Jonas. Boumsong than Bassong. Etc!

Good news if he has got a kitty to work with. Heres Ashleys chance to mend some bridges. I hope he takes it.

The first thing Joe should be doing is directing Wise to work out a contract with Owen – probably now on reduced wages. Enough talk, more action, please.
But did I dream the quote about his being told he’d have to sell before he could buy?
98 Ssav // Dec 3, 2008 at 2:20 AM
….And what about the players in Italy Joe knew they wanted to come?
99 NobbY! // Dec 3, 2008 at 5:54 AM
Is that AO tool still here?
Anyway, we’ll see how official it is. And if it is, how much is FatMike gon’ splash out? 7mil?
And about attracting players, yeah, I don’t think that’s our problem. It’s jus that we have a cheap owner, and a chairman who doesn’t know what he’s doing.
I mean, how did our ‘rivals’ snap up players like Alfonso Alves, Mido, and Cisse? Those were some good buys, but we can do better! Are you listening Ashley?!
100 Yeomsta // Dec 3, 2008 at 9:17 AM
people aren’t stirring things when they say Ashley isn’t willing to spend much per season, Ashley said HIMSELF that he was not willing to spend anymore than £20 million a season on players, look up his statement from september it’s all there in black and white.
101 samthecat // Dec 3, 2008 at 9:56 AM
Lets make it even clearer-Ashley said he was prepared to subsidize the club by 20m a year-that means since the wages are too high-10m would go towards wage costs and 10m to transfers.
Its quite possible therefore since we spent nothing in the last transfer window that this money is still available but who will be spending it-Joe or Dennis.
102 craig chisholm // Dec 3, 2008 at 10:31 AM
yeomsta…………..in nearly two years and three complete trans windows ashley has laid out a grand total of 2 million quid in real terms. this being the truthful case, it can be concluded that he is as tight as a ducks arse and not willing to spend a penny. he only spends when he can sell and thats a fact.. he contunued to sell players last window even though we had a patheticlly thin squad. now we are shafted. we should never have sold milner or emre. ashley is a spuds fan and has never ever supproted us as a team or more importantly as an investing owner. he has asset stripped nad pocketed the profit constantly since day one. dont let him tell you ohterwise, if the club was loosing money he would not be pricing us out the selling market. think about it, he could have sold to abu dhabi in the summer for 300 million, giving 60 million clear profit in just over a year but that option was not as actractive as the cash he is making out out of us. we are a cash cow for his other failing empire. anyone who thinks this greedy self centered turd will spend a penny is off their rocker. he wouldnt do it when he first bought so he aint gonna do it with us now after all the agro is he.

Arda Turan is a very good player and I think we would be happy to grab him. Would be a great signing for us and aint as slow as some say. A very gifted player on the ball. How about Achille Emana from Toulouse as a CM / DM the guy is exactly what we need yet no one seems to have noticed. He would go straight into the team to replace Butt. He would cope remarkably with the EPL as the guy is as strong as an ox. This guy has great vision and is full of running. Closes down players extremely well and is techinically gifted also. I don’t see why we don’t go for him. CHECK HIM OUT ON YOU-TUBE and you’ll see what I mean. THE PERFECT BUTT REPLACEMENT. Just imagine him and Barton in the center of our midfield we would be unstopable.
104 craig chisholm // Dec 3, 2008 at 10:46 AM
jp………….you got to be kidding, have you forgot all about this fella in the summer, we had loads of speculation over him and bugger all happened. even arda said he wanted to come. instead of getting a turk in, all we did was sell one instead, emre went with no replacement. ashley will not fork out 11 million for this bloke. great player but it aint gonna happen. ashley would not spend a tenenr to save his mams life.
105 JP...from The Rock // Dec 3, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Check Achille Emana from Toulouse he is our BUTT REPLACEMENT! It’s a transfer that is very possible and I think he will be more than willing to test himself in the EPL that suits his style.
106 JP...from The Rock // Dec 3, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Hmmmm…Craig Chisholm – I know that is true BUT I still think it is exactly what we need and COULD GET if FAT MIKE spends some cash for once. Then again Fat Mike was willing to spend more than 10M for Modric. Makes me wonder if it was genuine or just to shut us up. I would love to see EMANA in Newcaslte. Butt out Emana in. It’s possible just need to convince Ashley to spend a little. Maybe with what we got from Milner???? I dunno but I would love to see this guy play for us as he will be an intant success it’s obvious.
COME ON MIKE SPEND A LITTLE DAMN IT!!

OK, AO… why are you here? You obviously like to see yourself as a wind-up merchant or whatever…
You said football is about winning trophies… aint so… idiots gloating ‘oi, oi,oi we’re better and bigger than you’, is about winning trophies.
Newcastle aint won a raffle in 40 years but ask any supporter how much pleasure they’ve had at SJP during that time…(yes and misery n’all) it’s a way of life for us you just couldn’t understand it.
Why are you on here? Are you bitter about the fact we score freely against you as well as take 6 points from you each season, and use you as our recycling bin for geriatric players?
