Good news today that Newcastle expect their controversial midfielder Joey Barton to return from his MCL Knee Ligament injury in mid-January.
Joey Barton – back from knee injury in January
In fact Newcastle are top of the league on Physioroom.com with 7 injuries.
Player Injury Return Date
D Duff Groin/Pelvis Injury no return date
S Ameobi Ankle/Foot Injury no return date
J Barton MCL Knee Ligament Injury 17th Jan 09
Xisco Groin Strain 6th Dec 08
I Gonzalez Achilles Tendinopathy Mar 09
A Smith Achilles Tendinopathy 28th Jan 09
W Ngo Baheng ACL Knee Injury 1st Jan 09
That’s another reason we need a bigger squad because we just haven’t worked out why we get so many injuries, and are nearly always top of this particular league table.
It also means that Joey will have been out of action for nine weeks after picking up a knee ligament injury in the draw with Wigan Athletic at St James’s Park in mid-November.
Newcastle manager said:
“We have just had Joey’s injury re-assessed and the doctor and physio team tell me we can expect to have him back in the middle of January.”
“And now that he has a date to aim for, it will give Joey a big lift.” “The same applies to Alan Smith, who we are hoping to have back with us by the end of January following his injury problems.
“But at this moment in time we do not know when Ignacio Gonzalez will be returning.” “Shola has an ankle and foot injury and he is doubtful for Saturday.” “He is probably 50-50, but I don’t think it would be wise to risk him.”
“While Damien Duff will not make Saturday, I am expecting him to be with us when we go to Portsmouth next weekend.”
It’s just a pity that we never did get to the bottom of why we get so many injuries at Newcastle, which is a pity.
Comments very welcome.

they only have themselves to blame for signing consistenlyinjured players. Anyway. duff, xisco, barton and ameobi are hardly going to save you from relegation.

Souness tried to get to the bottom of it but with no success. I think it’s our physios aren’t good enough. They have been here as long as I can remember and they never seem to help anyone. Something must be done about this…starting with additions in January!

8 AO // Dec 3, 2008 at 2:01 PM
ross- cheers for that. I was expecting him to come out and say he wants out even though he will have to stay at newcastle for a few more weeks.
I remember keane saying the same thing before a bigger team came in for him. If spurs make a big bid he wont have much choice anyway as ashley will drive him to london himself.

This is NOT a small squad so please stop saying it! We’re deficient in backup for defence and could use an AM but that is it. It’s not a case of small squad, it’s a case of quantity but not quality. I’d rather we had about 7 midfielders who were all challenging for a place rather than 9 with a few tag alongs. As for strikers, we have 7 which is ridiculous. You need no more than 5 really or 6 at a push and then only if they’re forwards and not strikers.
I’ve said this time and time again and you keep writing this rubbish about our squad size. We need to redistribute the squad size not just sign more players. We can easily afford to cut about 4 or 5 of our current squad and not even notice it. It would save wage bill and give more money to get in the 1 or 2 players who will actually give a massive boost to the team.

why is nacho still at toon – surely we can just send him back!
we should get rid of
carroll
smith
duff
nacho
geremi
edgar
cacapa
I’ve heard on the grapevine that martins may be offloaded in jan as JK doesn’t think he’s a team player (tho think KK said much the same) – surely we’d be better off getting rid of the above list first than our most likely person to score goals out of nothing – lets hope its just rubbish
just shows what a joke we are
