There is likely to be several clubs after Michael Owen after the opening of the January transfer window.

Michael Owen – can we sign him up before January?
But we would hope Newcastle will cut that option off at the pass, by signing up Michael on a new contract this month.
Since he will become a free agent in the summer, there’s no doubt that Michael could get a lucrative contract from some other club, because they will not need to pay any money in transfer fees for the England striker.
Everton are today being linked withhe tNewcastle United striker now that they have Yakubu out for the rest of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.
Apparently Everton is the team that Owen supported as a youngster before he signed schoolboy forms for Liverpool in 1993 as a 13 year-old.
We know that Joe Kinnear will be anxious to sign Michael Owen to Newcastle, and we know that Joe will try to sign him quickly, and before the end of this month.
Just before Kevin Keegan resigned from the club in early September, the Board had indicated they had made an improved contract offer to Michael for an additional three seasons, so it would seem like that would be a good starting point for negotiations.
We hope Joe’s successful in persuading Michael his future is at Newcastle, and it would appear that Michael is happy on Tyneside, even though the club has been in disarray these last few months.
If Joe can get Michael to sign on the dotted line, then that will add a little bit more stability to the Tyneside club, and that’s what we need right now.
Comments very welcome.

I would have thought that Owen would have been tapped up by all the managers interested in him by now such as Bent Harry. If Owen was going to sign a new contract i think he would have done so by now. As newcastle dont have a permanent manager he wont as the next manager might not even want him.
3 UTD111 // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:18 AM
I don’t think we “know” that Kinnear wants to renew Owen’s contract at all! He’s saying what many of the fans would like to hear, but thats not the same thing.
The poison dwarf was allegedly touting the whole squad as up for sale in the last transfer window. No doubt the Dwarf sees Owen as the prize exhibit on his “Dennis Wise January Sales” stall.
Fat Cashley has lot a lot of money on the stock market, for example on his significant holding in the Halifax. He’s also hoyed away millions in the casinos. He would find it hard to resist an offer of say £5-6M (a good night out in a casino) for Mikey.
As was proven in the last transfer window, even if Ashley puppet Kinnear has a different view to the Dwarf – the dwarf will just do what the F**K he likes.
Nothing will improve until the poison dwarf is chucked out on his ear.

Personally…I hope he signs and finish his career in Newcastle.But i also believe that Man City are desperate for a preoven striker such as Owen.
I just read that they’re offering Blackburn 15mill+Onuoha for Santa Cruz.
If Owen doesn’t sign,it wouldn’t be such a bad idea ask 5mill+Onuoha.
I rate Onuoha big time and i think that he’s wasting his time and talent in Man City.
Prefect replacement for Beye in the future.

OFF TOPIC- Check Achille Emana from Toulouse he is our BUTT REPLACEMENT! It’s a transfer that is very possible and I think he will be more than willing to test himself in the EPL that suits his style.
6 Bucks_mag // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Know we were alledged to be interested in Emana over the summer but i thought he went to Real Betis?
7 JP...from The Rock // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM
We should get Owen tied up as soon as possible. He ha once again demonstrated how lethal he is infront of goal with this seasons goal-games ratio. The guy is still incredibly good and sharp. Not so sharp these last few games but that was due to him being on the bench during Ameobi’s amazing comeback. He had to fight for his place on the team like everyone else and I like that, it’s fair. Although in the last match I hardly knew he was on the pitch. Has an awful game last saturday but everyone has a bad day once in a while. If Fat Mike would have listened to KK ages ago we wouldn’t have this problem now! Fat Mike’s fault AGAIN! Stupid Prick. He’d better invest some cash into the club this January or we will go down and it will be a certainty if we can’t keep Owen in the club.
ALL ASHLEYS FAULT!!!!..the ignorant prick!
8 Ausgeordie // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:24 AM
I think we should try and keep him but I dont think the board need to bend over and take whatever Mickey gives them and I dont think he wants to stay. He will go somewhere else and whilst we might miss him like Dyer, the first time he is out for 6 months with an injury he will fade into a memory.
9 JP...from The Rock // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Bucks_mag =- He did go to Real Betis but he did say that he wanted to try the EPL. He suits it perfectly and would be the ideal replacement for NICKY BUTT… LETS GO FOR EMANA!!!!
10 Partizan // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:25 AM
JP….He’s excellent player but he just came to Betis and i don’t think he’ll be going anywhere soon.
Nikola Pokrivac for me right now is the number 1 candidate to replace Butt.
11 Taiwantoon // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:26 AM
To start looking for his replacement would be a “WISE” move. Don’t think he would fancy an extension on current deal under the circumstances.
12 Stardust // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Well after weeks of reading UTD111 ’s posts – I put forward the motion that he be recognised as Goon of the Week – Official Member of the MOB.
13 JP...from The Rock // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Partizan – I wish we try to get him, what a midfield that would be. Even if he is in Real Betis I still think he wants to test himself in the EPL as he once said. That and good wages for inspiration and he will definatley leave sunny Spain to come and play for us. Every proper player wants to test themselves at the highest level and I see him as a proper player.
14 Ben-Toon // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Really why would Owen leave, what would be his motivation.
1: None of the top 4 teams want or need him or would pay his wages for being 3rd choice
2: Would he really move his family who are settled.
3: If he did move it would be back to Cheshire so the teams he would consider would be Liverpool who dont want him. Everton cannot afford him. Man Utd who dont need him. That leaves Man City who are the only threat in my oppinion, yes they can afford him but with all there money dont you think they would be looking for bigger younger fish.
4: Spurs, Villa, Portsmouth are the only other possible teams he would consider and all of them will not pay his wages.
So why would he move if he not increasing his wages going back home or gaurentieing a trophy.
I hope he stays
15 Shearbliss // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:39 AM
As said before MO is not worth it! he is not Shearer or captian material. I feel he keeps players like oba from a regular first team spot. He has cost us plenty of money for what return. I feel that he could move on and start his carrer somewhere else we have to move on and take the hint. If he wanted to stay the contact would have been signed last year! I think he will be at everton. He is not that good anymore and as Capallo said he does not work hard enough off the ball. he has dropped behind DB as an england striker. As NUFC we should be looking for the modern strikers. I think the board are in a funny postion. If they do the obvious thing and get rid of MO (waste of money) and invest in youngsters for the future they will be hounded by the fans. If they dont and give MO what he was it would show no backbone by the board. MU have made hard decisions in the past (Jaap, Van, Yorke,Hughes,Ince) and it has not affected them. we need a strong base, that is board, manager, and fans. The problem with us WE can not see the bigger picture. We fail year after year.
Roader trying to bring through the academy. (If he stayed they would have been experienced and we would be higher in the leauge)
BS tryed to make us hard to breakdown and work in a diffrent way of playing. (he could have achived this and started to add flair)
The bigger picture fans! DW and MA has a structure and plan that they want to work to but we keep demanding this and that. Alot of clubs in this leauge would like to have our board so be thankful. WE are NOt a top 6 team.We have not been for over 5 years now get over it!

25 Nick // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:53 AM
AT NUFC we love to pay big bucks to perpetually injured players. It’s in the constitution.
Why do you think good managers like Benitez won’t touch Owen.
After Shearer had his bad injury, everything had to be set up for Shearer and the rest of the team basically didn’t score.
We are doing the same mistake with Owen, putting him on a pedestal. Owen can not create for himself like a Torres, Berbatov, Defoe etc, players who can make something out of nothing.
Before their respective injuries, Owen and Shearer were the best strikers of their generation, but the game has changed.
Sentimentality has killed us before. SBR tried to address it and was undermined. The day we get a ruthless manager who does what’s best for the club (and is allowed to) and doesn’t live in fear of upsetting one particular ” untouchable” individual can’t come soon enough.
26 eaststander // Dec 3, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Owen can go for me its been nearly 3 and half seasons and he has not warrented a new offer of £110000 a week or anywhere near that. Injuries are not his fault but that sort of wage is only paid to players on top of their game and play week in week out. I am not sure anyone will want him at this sort of price. Should we?
27 Spyro // Dec 3, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Nick
Good post
Ben-Toon
Not sure really. He scores for fun in league 1, but it is a big jump. I don’t think we should go for him though. We have Xisco to return from injury and Viduka back. If Owen leaves we should replace him with a quality striker. I say hijack Cisse from Sunderland before he signs permanently.
28 Simon376 // Dec 3, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Why do so many people keep having a go at Owen. I know he’s been unlucky with injuries, but look at his goals to games ratio for us, it’s almost one every other game. We can’t afford to let a player go who scores like that. Even if Ashley came up with his £20 million a season (can’t ever see that !!!!) it would take that much and maybe the following seasons investment to bring in somebody who can match his goals to games.
We will be so much better off keeping hold of him if he wants to stay even if he does have a long spell out again. We have Oba, Viduka when fit, Shola and Xisco. I’m not impressed with Xisco up to now, but so many say he needs to be given a chance. Well if Owen gets injured again, he can have his chance or maybe he could step in for Viduka. So lets do our best to keep hold of the man who score so many when he plays

sell him..along with smith, viduka, butt, harper (yes i know, but it’s: him or our world class to be youngsters), geremi, carroll (8th choice striker in NUFC), cacapa, duff. they cost us over 20m/year, and i don’t think they improve us. i mean…owen, viduka, smith…martins and shola can do i better job up front..they are talented plus they work hard… you all are saying that we don’t have enough players…ffs we’ve got 8 strikers..and you want another one…4 strikers should be enough…

“Fat Cashley has lot a lot of money on the stock market, for example on his significant holding in the Halifax.” (Prey tell at what point did you meet the Wealth Manager in charge of this transaction and at what point did he breach his future relationship with his client to tell you about it)

I think I must agree with Shearbliss. I feel that Owen does not want to stay at NUFC. I am still angry that he stayed on the pitch at the Smoggies at the expense of Oba. I think it is time that not only the so-called board put-up about him but also that Owen himself states definitely where he wants his future to be. No heart and soul means no black and white striped shirt in my book.

I’ve been supporting United since before you were a twinkle in your daddy’s eye son, so tough – you’re wrong again. I attend the games and support my team. I do not support the current owners. That is my right.
My view of what Wise will be up to in the “January sales” is Opinion – in spite of your meagre and laughable opposition, people in here are allowed to have opinions….
The facts about Cashleys Halifax holding (and others) are public knowledge, having been mentioned more than once in the quality press. There is no evidence of Cashley having subsequently sued the Telegraph or the Times. By the way “prey” is something hunted by a predator – I think you meant “pray tell…”
The fact that Wise does what he likes was demonstrated during the last transfer window.

…”Newcastle Will Try To Sign Michael Owen This Month”…
Slightly misleading artcile this one ED! When i read the headline i got quite excited then continued down to see no direct quote/source of information to put anything concrete behind this statement!
Let’s be honest; right now michael is not firing on all cylinders; for whatever reason (be that he is unsetled with his future up in the air, he is no longer fully commited to the club, confidence, not yet 100% fit; i don’t know)
But a fully fit and confident MO is going to score goals for Newcastle united. Can we keep him??? I don’t know. Do i think we will keep him??? I really do hope so. It would be a gamble because of his fitness record; but so would be bringing in someone to replace him for 5-10 milion then paying them approx half of what we would offer MO to extend his contract!
To flourish; MO needs to be supplied with the amunition and he will cause problems! He has never been a striker that engineers chances on his own; apart from his very early days when he used his pace to get in behind defenders! If we can get somone in midfield who will create chances then MO will score goals; its that simple! We have to remember he is our current club captain so lets get behind him and the team on saturday! F@ck this 45,000 lark and lets fill the stadium; we need to make some noise and get a precious three points against Stoke and i havea feeling that a certain MO will grab a goal or two!!!!!!!

Owen is rubbish for team like ours, he would score in a great side but we are not.
3m and he’s out.
67 reillers // Dec 3, 2008 at 12:53 PM
I think we all know the reason why Owen hasn’t signed his contract yet, he thinks there will be offeres in the market and he’s waiting to see if he’ll get a better offer then what we’re giving him. Which if you ask me is a joke. Loyalty clearly means nothing to him.
We’ve tried to buy him into staying, giving in to his demands of a ridiculous wage which he hasn’t earned or deserved and by giving him the captaincy which again, he hasn’t earned or deserved. He’s getting left on the field when he’s playing pathetically and honest hardworking players like Martins, who could have won us the game the way he was playing, who had ran himself into the ground, was taken off instead. You need to earn your place on the team, but Owen hasn’t, he’s got on and stayed on because of reputation and reputation alone. All he is now is a big name, has been player who can’t even make a poor English side.
The reality is that he’s not that good anymore. But we’re paying through the noise to keep him and making decisions and sacrifices we shouldn’t have to make to keep him happy. If he’s that deseperate to go, let him off. The team is bigger then one player, no matter how good he was or how big a name and reputation he has.
But despite that, he still is waiting to see if he gets a better offer, and us obsessing over that might have us ending up with loosing a player like Martins/Given..etc and we didn’t see it coming because we were too busy running around after Owen. If we loose Owen we loose at the most 12 goals a season and I doubt he’ll even get that. If he leaves he’s replaceable, the same couldn’t be said about certain other memebers of the team, like Given and Martins.
If Owen wants to leave then let him off, but I think he’ll get the biggest shock of his life when none of the big 4 even blink in his direction. He’s not that good anymore and we all know it. If he wants to leave then so be it, he’s not worth all of this.
68 Kevin nichol // Dec 3, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Toon Graham – I agree its down to them two teams as posted earlyer but Everton cannot afford is wages and im sure he will not take a 40% wage cut just to go home.
78 Bellletti "fine lady" // Dec 3, 2008 at 2:04 PM
I back Ashley all of my heart, hope he can sell our club asap and go f ***out here.
79 TORONTOON // Dec 3, 2008 at 2:18 PM
owen no doubt has great goal/minutes played ratio, but if you calculate his wage/minutes played ratio, it’s unjustifiable to keep him! in 4 seasons, he’s made 58 appearances and scored 26 goals. that makes him about 1 in 2. at 120k a week, takings threes months off in the summer, he’s made 17mil from wages(including the current season). now, thats 660,000$ per goal. now, do you still think we should keep him?
now lets have a look at oba
in 3 seasons, he’s made 90 appearances, scored 32. that makes him about 1 in 3. at 90k a week, taking the summers off, he’s made 9.7mil from wages (including the current season). now, thats about 300,000$ per goal; half of what owens goals cost.
we can compare them like cars…keep the old one and keep sinking money into repairs? or start driving the new one and get somewhere?
80 Punk Skunk // Dec 3, 2008 at 2:43 PM
Aye,
but, heaven forfend, what if Oba gets injured & is out for a while, that changes things…& shit does happen!..
…Also, we got close to what Owen cost back after he got injured playin’ for his country, so that also changes the figures, doesn’t it?..
…& bein’ on the american continent, you surely know that what footballers get paid over here is a joke compared with what sportsmen earn over there…Mega deals!..

I think we need to looking to buy Cisse next Summer, everything is looking shakey at Sunderland with Keane.
Then we would have Martins and Cisse as our top strikers, if one is injured the same team would work.
We will never have the midfield needed to supply an Owen type of player, people say we couldnt afford that type of striker from anywhere else, I say we cannot afford the £15m plus midfielders needed to support Owen AND pay Owen’s wages.
We should concentrate on fast mobile one touch strikers who are quick on the counter to force the opposition to keep players back, that way reducing the goals we concede and games we lose.
Jonas and Zog are brilliant wingers for those types of strikers (Jonas on the right).
Otherwise all we do is talk about Owen’s injuries and our poor midfield, which will never be good enough.
Martins and Cisse compensate for a lacking midfield, just keep playing the ball through especially on a counter and they will be there first 9 out of 10 times.
Having two or three strikers who play the same game means that it isnt as complicated if one is off injured, the whole team formation does not need change.
82 Tom_Toon // Dec 3, 2008 at 3:00 PM
TORONTOON – Oba is not on anywhere near 90k a week.
83 TORONTOON // Dec 3, 2008 at 3:10 PM
punk skunk;
good point i forgot that we got some $ for Owens international injury, but the injury record speak for itself. 58 games in 4 seasons? he’s luxury player for the likes of man city, chelsea…if the big4 don’t want him (and i have to assume that the big4 is sensible enough to make the big4)…see smith, geremi, butt…all names of the past.
by the way american sports is a joke (hockey is not american)…i rather play some pes than go to a throwball game. all wages here are overly inflated…people here get paid $50/hour for putting nut B onto screw A
84 TORONTOON // Dec 3, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Tom_Toon;
my point further strengthens. numbers don’t lie.
85 micepie // Dec 3, 2008 at 4:00 PM
Do we really want this sort of circus (below) if we get meggarich owners?!
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has rejected a move to Manchester City. The Premier League big spenders tabled a world record £129m bid. (Private Spanish radio station Cadena Ser)
Manchester City are determined to spend £70m to sign a “world superstar” in the January transfer window with Kaka, Lionel Messi, Fernando Torres, Carlos Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Samuel Eto’o all in the frame. (Independent)
Would be great if Owen signs an extended contract though. Our problem is not in attack but in midfield!
86 Punk Skunk // Dec 3, 2008 at 4:22 PM
Torontoon,
I hear what ya’ sayin’ man!..
…Gotta say tho’, i am a Redskins fan…For my sins!..
87 Punk Skunk // Dec 3, 2008 at 7:09 PM
£129m for a keeper…Eejits!..
…OMG, they’re gonna screw up the transfer scene even worse than the chavs…& what’s worse is, all the teams in other countries will just carry on extortin’ extra cash from english clubs…Der!..
…It’s obviously time to end the wholesale buyin’ of players & therefore league titles!..
88 reillers // Dec 3, 2008 at 8:10 PM
City can do just about anything really with their money to an extent, if there are money driven (not success driven might I add) players out there, which there are a few of. They could all sign.
City can pretty much buy who they like of those money players, those modern day, spoilt brats with not a wee bit of ambition, players like Robinho, overrated and overhyped.
No one has more money then them, no one. And they’re not going to buy just any player, it has to be an overhyped. The are going to turn this window into a shopping nightmare. Offers like that for a keeper is insane (I’ve never got why keepers sell for a lot less then other players, imo they’re the most important player on the team)
But 129 million is a joke.
They aren’t getting anywhere near the top 4 and the sooner they realise it the sooner they stop giving us a wee headache.
89 Punk Skunk // Dec 3, 2008 at 8:15 PM
Stop on Reillers!..
90 craig chisholm // Dec 4, 2008 at 7:49 AM
sheerbliss………..’we should be thankful’ of our board as alot of other clubs would like a baord set up like that. you are way off the mark there. derek lambiarse…………….you think he is good do you? you think an owner that asset strips and has only invested 2 million on players in three full transfer windows and guided us into the relegation zone without much chance of getting out of it is good stewardship? i call it a complete shambles and we are also being ran be money grabbing spud mercenaries.
91 UTD111 // Dec 4, 2008 at 8:33 AM
Well said Craig……couldn’t have put it better myself :0))

Owen is not in the best of form lately for whatever reason. My theory is because he hasn’t been offered a contract yet and is unhappy about the speculation and uncertainty.
He is also a bit of a lily on a dungheap at NUFC in that for all we have good wingers at the club, Downing showed every one of them the way home last Saturday when it comes to putting over a decent cross. Owen can be a class act but he will be wasted without a creative midfielder and some improved wing play.
Shocking to think he has cost us over half a million per game for the 50 he has played for us. But from where we stand now, on a reduced wage and with a small signing-on fee, he’d be good value and his alternatives seem limited. If he won’t sign, we just have to say farewell and good luck and make Shay captain of the side straight away.
But mainly, we need the club to act decisively.
93 Cyprus-Toon // Dec 4, 2008 at 4:06 PM
Imo I think we should let him go & get 2 or 3 new, younger, less injury prone players for the wages we pay him, as he’s never been a true TOON & would walk away in a heart beat if one of the top 4 came in for him..
I mean, we have imo 1 striker worth keeping & that’s Oba, the rest should be sold asap & get some fresh blood in, some one who’s going to fight for the TOON & not just hang around & get payed shite loads of money for sitting on the bench!!
Owen – Sell
Viduka – Sell
Ameobi – Sell
Smith – Sell
Xisco – Keep & play more
Martins – Keep
Carrol – Sell/loan out
Buy – Ricardo Fuller (Stoke), Kevin Doyle (Reading), Cisse (Mackems)
There are other players I’d get rid off too
94 chuck // Dec 5, 2008 at 3:46 AM
Dont care if Owen goes, never showed or stated he wanted to be here, its all about 100k per week.
Plus we have Martins.
Sell him then pick up Ashton , yeah I know he has suffered injuries, who has`nt?
The new Shearer & bellamy act.
Believe Bridges is on his wayout from Chelsea, would be a great aquisition.
Anyone pick up Appiah yet, would fit in nice.
Does`nt need a lot of signings to give a team a new look.
What are we talking here,
Bridge =5-7m.
Appiah=5m.
Ashton=8-9m
Sell jan.
Owen =4-5 m.
Sell in the summer,
Smith=3-4m do I hve to say why ?
Shola =3-4m. like him but eh!
Viduka =1m. permanent sick note.
Butt =1m. legs gone.
Geremi =1m. past sell by date.
Cacapa =free, see above.
Edgar =1m. wont make it.
Enrique= 3.5m. see above.
Big striker from Gateshead, ? see above.
Probably some prices off but you get the picture.
