Newcastle Trailing Ivory Coast Defender?

There’s no doubt that Joe Kinnear’s top priority in the January transfer window will be to sign a defender and probably a left back, and Newcastle will be linked with anybody who looks anywhere decent in that position, during January.

Steve Gohouri – wanted by Newcastle United?

Hopefully we’ll get the new players into the squad early in January so we can get the benefit of the new players as soon as possible.

The latest player to be linked with a move to Tyneside is Borussia Monchengladbach defender Steve Gohouri, who has said he would like a move to England, with Newcastle of course reportedly lining up a bid.

Newcastle are supposed to be ready to bid around 4M euros (£3.4M) to sign the Ivory Coast international in January. The 6 ft 3 ins Gohouri, has claimed he is wanted by clubs in several European leagues and has talked to Sky Sports about his move:

“I am back playing very well, that is why clubs all over the world – there are clubs in France and Russia – are after me,”

“However, my next move has to be in the Premiership. There are clubs showing some interest, but to be honest the Premiership is not an obsession.”

“I love the Spanish league as well, however, in the Premiership the physical contact is more, so I can enjoy myself more there.”

The 27-year-old, who moved Borussia Monchengladbach in December of 2006, seems to have played just 14 times for the team, and has only recently returned from injury.

Steve added:

“I will be back in the national team soon. I was out because of the injury. The coach said the team needs me once I start playing.

“We have to go to the World Cup, it is the biggest thing in the world. We should be there and create history for African football.”

It seems here that the player is making his own case, and he seems to be his own biggest fan.  But he doesn’t even say there are clubs in England interested in him, so we’re not sure if he would be a decent buy for Newcastle, or if we are interested in the player at all.

He’s only played for the Ivory Coast on a handful of occasions, so we would have expected him to have a lot more caps at 27.

We’ll put him down as a dubious interest – at best.

Comments welcome.

    1. We dont need a Cb.
    2. He’s too old.
    3. If we were to buy a CB it would be a good quality one, not him.

What are the odds on Big Fat Sam being the new Sunderland manager? It would seem poetic wouldn’t it?

Ed, can I make a suggestion? When you’re posting an article about a player we’re ‘interested’ in can you put the stats directly underneath or above the picture with the name? Like this:

    Steve Gohouri – CB, 27, 6 ft 3

It makes it a bit easier for us to compare player to player, just an idea anyway.

I’m not surprised about Keano leaving, will be interesting to see what they do at the press confernce he was supposed to be at.

    Yep, tis tripe this report.

Shame about Keano – he was the perfect man for that job. The songs wrote themselves.

It would be nice to get Reid back in there so we can resurrect the ‘Monkeys heed’ songs.

give them cacapa and some $ for this guy. it don’t hurt to have a few defenders on the bench.
