Which Players Should Newcastle Buy in January?

Joe Kinnear doesn’t need to sell any players in January, and the best course of action could be to just bring in a few top-class players, assuming he can get the requisite transfer funds from Mike Ashley.

Mike Ashley – how much money will he give Joe?

We probably need a couple of defenders, and a central midfielder, although that’s just our take on the situation.

We definitely need a left back and those we have been linked with, including Leighton Baines, Stephen Warnock, Urby Emanuelson, Kyle Naughton and John Arne Riise would all improve our squad, but of these our best bet as far as availability goes could well be Leighton Baines, if Everton would sell.

Maybe we can do a deal for Leighton by offering Alan Smith in part-exchange. They are both worth around £3M although Leighton was bought for £5M last summer and Smith for £6M the summer before that.

It also seems that Joe wants to bring in another center back, but with the improved form of Sebastien Bassong, and the fact we also have Coloccini and Taylor, not to mention 18 year-old defenders Tamas Kadar and Ben Tozer coming through, we should be OK in central defense in a couple of seasons.

That’s why if we can get Sol Campbell from Portsmouth for around £500K, with an 18 months contract, he would be an excellent buy, because not only would he be able to help the youngsters, but he’d also challenge for a first team position, and that would be worth the money on a few fronts.

The more difficult position to fill will be central midfield, because we need some creativity there, and those players usually are quite expensive, unless Kinnear is willing to go for somebody from the Championship.

We could always make a move for Watford’s Republic of Ireland under-21 midfielder John Joe O’Toole, although Joe says he wants only proven players, and John Joe will hardly go straight into the first team.

Not sure what kind of money Joe may be getting in January, but he could also go after Stephen Appiah, who is still available as a free agent, since he left his last club Fenerbahce, last August.  Hopefully we have already made a move for him behind the scenes, because he would be a great acquisition for the club, at a very good price.

What positions do you think need strengthening in January, and which players would fit the bill?

Not sure if Joe will be given any more than £10M in January, if that, although Simon Jones of the Daily Mail is reporting that Joe asked for two players worth £6M each and Mike said it was OK, and leave it to him.

We’d love to believe that is true, but we’ll need to wait and see.

But if it is true, it also may mean Ashley will not sell the club, which has problems of its own with many of Newcastle’s supporters.

Let’s know what you think on the January transfer front.    Comments very welcome.

A left-back and a defensive midfielder for definite and if funds and time permit then an AM.

    LB – Bridge (£6mil)/Warnock (£6mil)/Baines (£4mil) – Preferably Bridge

    DM – Mehmet Topal (£6mil)

Don’t need to bother thinking about players for Jan- We won’t be buying any!

Unless their on a free transfer and willing to play for £1 per week! (And I bet Ashley doesn’t pay them that!)

can of worms there like Ed, id agree with you however i would emphasise the need for 2 midfielders, yes an attacking player is essential but i would say a big powerful combatative holding players who can get his foot an the ball and spray the ball around is important also. Any one who has saw our midfield dwell on the ball and play aimless balls (butt) will vouch for that! however, as far as priorities go, think your spot on!

just to follow, i hope we buy:
    LB, CB, DM, AM
if we do that…we should be ok, and from the quality of the players we brought in during the summer, and of course if Ashley provides the funds, im confident our scouting team wont let us down and will bring us in some quality

i defineteley think that if JK has 10mil to spend he should first of all sign Wayne Bridge who cant be more than 6mil and is an absolute jem of a player. if he is not available than go for the 3 mil baines option.

I personally think Geremi is a waste of space so he has to go. which should bring in extra funds. in terms of an attacking mid or creative one im really not sure, dont no why emre was sold!!.Appaiah should be brought in on a free and the jury is out on smith- i would say let him go because he is not good enough at midfeild and in oba, ameobi, dukes and owen he is not needed upfront.

We dont need a defensive midfielder Guthrie and Butt both do that and thats why we lack the killer pass because they only pass backwards or sideways. Attacking/Creative midfielder and Left Back have to be the priorities if we do sign anyone in January.

Guthrie = Lighweight box-to-box, scared of a tackle.

Butt = Cant pass for his life, past it, slow.

I just watched Ibisevic against Bayern and believe me,this guy’s gonna be MVP this year in Germany and maybe he’ll break Gerd Muller record of 40 goals in 1 season.
    He already has 17.

we may get 2 mil for owen so that means our transfer budget will be 2 mil are there any world class strikers for 2 mil that would want to come here

    0
  • That may be but none of them venture past the halfway line so we need a central midfielder who can break down defences and score goals before defensive midfield needs addressing. Guthrie isnt really that creative.

We need a centre midfielder who can pass the ball and create chances. If this is a low lying defensive midfielder similar to Carrick (not carrick tho obv), or an attackin midfielder if neccessary. Barton and Guthrie are both capable of being box to box or defensive midfeilders. We need somebody who will create chances.

Beyethegreat….Witsel would be a fantastioc signing.

A left back is our priority (de ja vu with the last 8 transfer windows).

I am sure we could get a striker that has scored as much as Owen has for us since the time he arrived for 2million. Probably about 25 goals MAX

People need to stop calling Owen “world class”, he has never scored more than 12 goals in a season for us. Never scored 20 goals in a season in his whole career. That is not “world class”. The papers and media hype have gotten to you. He is a good striker that is all.

    Ed,
Lets have a reality check here:
    1) JFK has been proved to talk crap
    2) Which top quality players would want to come here? Wayne Bridge would never come here and who would blame him.
    3) I love reading the posts from the fantasist’s on here who clearly do their research on Premier League Manager, they must be wetting their pants with excitement…………….
    4) The fact is that no big names will be arriving and we will rely on second rate loan signings.
Seen it all before and have no faith with present regime.
    Sorry for sounding disgruntled.

we should defend from the front.that means our strikers are always good, we have been losing possesion in the midfield.they are the ones who cost us not our defenders.they give away falls so easily and also cannot pass the balls.there is creativity.they put our defenders on pressure, and one time it will definitily cost the defenders.so i think we have to put our money on central midfield.who can pass the ball and is comfortable with the balls.thats the only weak point i see.arteta can be good for us, he has vision to pass the ball or any other creative midfielder.
