Joe Kinnear refused to allow two of his more experienced youngsters, Carroll (19) and Edgar (21), go out on loan, when the loan transfer deadline came and went last month.
Andrew Carroll – appeared just twice this season
Kinnear talked about some of his young guns today:
“There is a possibility that both Edgar and Carroll will be called upon at some stage.” “And it’s true I had clubs enquire about them going out on loan.“
“But, basically, I wasn’t in a position to do that.” “I explained to both of the lads that it would be a risk if we picked up any more injuries.”
“Obviously, both of them would dearly love to be playing, and they’re a bit frustrated, but they’re aware they’re needed on the bench, as they may be called upon.”
“At the moment, I’m not in a position to let anybody go.”
It seems that Norwich City were interested in taking both players, as Glenn Roeder is well aware of their capabilities, and Burnley were also keen on defender Edgar.
Carroll has made just two appearances for the first team this season, and David has made five appearances, but while they are on the bench a lot, they are not getting enough playing time.
But Kinnear has to sacrifice their development in case he gets even more injuries and needs to use the lads, but we can understand if they are frustrated at the situation.
Joe will need to decide this summer whether he wants to keep Edgar at the club, since David’s contract runs out.

Comment #44Carroll and Edgar have shown promise in the past and may go on to be top flight players.
I have my doubts and Newcastle have hindered their progress by not allowing them to go out on loan. Particular Edgar, as Carroll has had past chances and blown them.
This problem will not go away, unless we buy well in Jan’ and then buy excessively in the summer to enhance our squad.
If this is not done then next season could be worse, as instead of Edgar and Carroll, it will be Ranger, Donaldson, Lua Lua, Kadar and Tozer, prospects in my opinion that are better than the 2 mentioned in Ed’s comments.
Lessons learnt Ashley, i hope so and i bet so do the kids who did so well in their cup game last night.
Buying players for the ‘now’ can help the kids of tomorrow!

Comment #45Entertainers…..”Buying players for the ‘now’ can help the kids of tomorrow”!
I agree with you 100% there, cos these kids are not ready to make impact yet and we need first team top players to teach them aswell.
I read that Steve Bruce wants Butt this January….gee we need at least 2 excellent CM this January, its a shame that we cant provide the perfect ammunition for Martins & Owen,by doing that they could hit 15 goals each at least.

Comment #46Don’t know about you,but i’d like Banayoun in January.
I never liked him before to be honest with you,bat watching the game against Blackburn and how he was taking on 2-3 players made me change my opinion about him.
I know he’s lightweight, but his technique is one of a kind, plus he could deliver that killer pass that we desperatelly need atm.

Comment #48benayoun – good call, we’re desperate for creativity and flair in midfield
we need to replace butt by the time next season kicks off, and we need someone better than guthrie alongside butt’s replacement. not that i think guthrie is bad, just not yet up to it
lw – jonas
rw – benayoun
dcm – appiah, song, diarra ???
acm – n’zogbia, elano, skjelbred ???

Comment #49Surely just sticking a recall clause in their contract would do the trick? I understand for Edgar, but for Carroll? We have more than enough forwards to risk sending him out!
Both he and Edgar (as well as a number of others) need to be getting first team experience.

Comment #52At my wits end with this sport at the moment!! I would have chastised anyone that doubted football a year ago however im losing faith! Its not just us who have a weekly cock up/ scandal, we just seem to be the worst and the on field performances are a joke. Along with the squad predicament i.e Owen, Barton, N’sulk etc…Then theres the off field shambles of Ashley, wise & Co. ITS A JOKE!!!!!!! I’ve even started watching American Sports! That says it all!!!

Comment #53Sunlun – I agree with your sentiments. Myself and a few other like mined football fans have started watching local non league football. It’s more satisfying watching a decent team of lads who actually enjoy playing and really want to play week in, week out for none or very very little money.
However I think that most of the problems are actually with the premier league. When you start to go down a division or two watching a game becomes more exiting again. I’ve watched more championship games in the last two seasons than I have PL or Champions league games.
Football sold it sold it’s soul a long time ago and unfortunately we are now see the result.
Only ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal and to a lesser extent Liverpool can compete in the transfer market and attract the best players. The rest of the league are left begging for anything that falls from their table.
The PL is as predictable as the SPL.
An elite euro league will happen very soon, I’m convinced of it.

Comment #54partizan, i think you’ve been playin to much football manager. As for edgar and carroll, loan them out, i know for a fact eddie has been wanting away on a loan deal for the past 2 years! It could be just what the both need! a bit game time and confidence builder!

Comment #55Agree Entertainers. We dont appear to be able to introduce young guns into the first team as well as other clubs. Kids cannot develop if they dont get introduced gradually to first team football. I have seen Edgar used as cover out of position, even when he’s carrying an injury and suprise suprise at West Ham playing at RB he was dreadful. He is a CB not a FB or CM. I feel the club owe it to him to tell him if he’s off or not because he has put his career on hold long enough and gets no credit just “not good enough” comments. If JK doesnt think he’s good enough then let him go, he could have been at Burnley now fighting a promotion battle in the Championship. Just let the kid go !!
