Owen Back To His Best? – We Hope So

In what could be a bit of a scary January for Newcastle United fans, there’s one player we know is dedicated to Newcastle United – goalkeeper Shay Given.

Shay Given -hoping Michael now back to his best

Shay Given talked today about his optimism that his colleague and captain Michael Owen, is close to rediscovering his form, some of which was very evident in the first half against Stoke City last Saturday.

Shay was asked by Sky Sports if he though Michael was back to his best:

“We hope so,” “We know if we create chances for Michael he will stick them away and he has been doing that for all of his career.”

Michael’s goals on Saturday were classic, and he made them look so easy, when we all know they were not. But when he’s fit and has had a few games under his belt, the Cheshire lad can score at any time, and we have the skill in the team that can set the chances up for him, which Gutierrez and Martins did brilliantly on Saturday.

But it still wasn’t enough to get us the 3 points.  🙁

Given has also said how pleased he was that Joe Kinnear’s contract has been extended through the end of the season, because it gives some stability to the team and the club.

And the Ireland international goalkeeper is hopeful his manager will be very busy in the January transfer market, as Shay has said many times before that the Newcastle squad is just not big enough for the challenges of the Premier league, and we found that out – again – last Saturday.

Shay continued:

“Joe being the manager gives us a little bit of stability,”

“January will give the opportunity to freshen things ups, even if it is just with loan players.”

Things are starting to look up on the transfer front, but we’ve been promised signings before, which have not materialized, but we think thsi time Ashley will be more than willing to fund Joe, if he can line up some good players.

Mike has an awful lot of money that could go down the drain if the Magpies get relegated this season, and that should be enough motivation for him.

Comments welcome.

Michael Owen, as long as he is on the pitch is a top class striker….
The type of player who can nick a goal at any point…
If we can manage to get through this transfer window without selling any of our better players it will be a massive bonus….
Players like Owen and Shay are the backbone of our side…
We must do everything we can to ensure Owen signs a new contract…Even if we give him a new 4 year deal on the same coin…20 million in wages….What other top striker is available at a decent price who would command lower wages than Owen?

Owen to score 20 EPL goals this season? That’d be a first!

    BUT I hope he does.

    Oba fan….

How many does he have now? 8?

A decent cup run and a stint clear of any injuries will do the trick….the boy is a magnet in front of goal…

keep them fingers and tootsies crossed

The only reason Owen has decided to show up is because hes putting himself in the shop window. how convienient he decides to play 3 weeks before january.

ok…so owen got a couple of goals on saturday. but without a right-sided midfielder and a cenre midfielder to thread balls through to him and oba, we’ll be stuffed. we are NOT to good to go down. We do NOT have the players to lift a trophy. We do NOT have a defence that wont panic we a few long balls are lofted up by the oppositions defence. Drawing all our games isnt good enough, and without wanting to sound like a doomster, we need 3 new players in – LB, RM, CM- and the dead wood – Carroll(never going to make it in the PL) Duff(injured a lot and inconsistant) Xisco(need I say anything??) Enrique(the word ‘powderpuff’ springs to mind) Cacapa (clueless…)Smith(‘money’ and ‘waste of’.)
    – out. Otherwise its ta-ta to the PL and hello to the panda pop league.

nowt gets owen fit faster than a transfer window. hes already gone. and don’t bother compiling any possible tranfer target lists. we ain’t getting anyone of any quality as we won’t pay for it (fees or wages).

if your so confident get yasell a lumper on doon the bookies…

if your not from the area that translates to “Visit your local Bookmaker and while you are in there, pop a fair few English pounds stating Michael will not be playing for Newcastle come February”

If your from Sunderland go and find little Keano

Last of the big spenders 😆

doofa the loofa, I agree and I can’t see anything changing this window. Many many pundits say it’s a bad time to buy but we do need probably 2 players in desperately, a left back and a midfielder (and our owner out 🙂 mesage to santa )

Owen doesnt care about Newcastle. He only came for the money. He’ll be off at the first attempt. Can you imagine what all his mates say to him. Why the hell did you go to the toon.

Best chance we have with owen is that the squad looks close.

But he always claims “oh if i say this theyll take it the wrong way blah blah”

All he has to do is come out like Given and show his intentions. Say he loves playing for Newcastle, the team, the fans etc Then he’s putting himself in a strong position…because Ashley will get a sh*tload of grief if he doesnt agree to Owens demands and lets him hop off.

Reality is he probably isnt saying this because he WANTS to hop off. I reckon he’s off to man city.

dougnufc – it doesn’t matter who’d schuster attract, if he doesn’t have funds at his disposal.. it’s ok to bring a manager who has contacts all over the globe..IF you give him 50m per transfer window..and we all know that won’t happen… but like i already said..our best XI is great…they play great, WHEN they attack…all we do need is a leader in center of midfield and a manager who prefers an attacking style of play… and we must also get rid off dead would..they cost us 20m per season..and contribute nothing…
