In what could be a bit of a scary January for Newcastle United fans, there’s one player we know is dedicated to Newcastle United – goalkeeper Shay Given.
Shay Given -hoping Michael now back to his best
Shay Given talked today about his optimism that his colleague and captain Michael Owen, is close to rediscovering his form, some of which was very evident in the first half against Stoke City last Saturday.
Shay was asked by Sky Sports if he though Michael was back to his best:
“We hope so,” “We know if we create chances for Michael he will stick them away and he has been doing that for all of his career.”
Michael’s goals on Saturday were classic, and he made them look so easy, when we all know they were not. But when he’s fit and has had a few games under his belt, the Cheshire lad can score at any time, and we have the skill in the team that can set the chances up for him, which Gutierrez and Martins did brilliantly on Saturday.
But it still wasn’t enough to get us the 3 points. 🙁
Given has also said how pleased he was that Joe Kinnear’s contract has been extended through the end of the season, because it gives some stability to the team and the club.
And the Ireland international goalkeeper is hopeful his manager will be very busy in the January transfer market, as Shay has said many times before that the Newcastle squad is just not big enough for the challenges of the Premier league, and we found that out – again – last Saturday.
“Joe being the manager gives us a little bit of stability,”
“January will give the opportunity to freshen things ups, even if it is just with loan players.”
Things are starting to look up on the transfer front, but we’ve been promised signings before, which have not materialized, but we think thsi time Ashley will be more than willing to fund Joe, if he can line up some good players.
Mike has an awful lot of money that could go down the drain if the Magpies get relegated this season, and that should be enough motivation for him.
