Better News About Butt and Guthrie

Joe Kinnear has given out some good news today, as he expects both central midfielders Nicky Butt and Danny Guthrie to be fit for the game at Portsmouth on Sunday.

Danny Guthrie – fit for Sunday

Presumably it will also help both of them that our game is a day later on Sunday, which gives them that little bit extra time to be fully fit for the game.

Manager Joe Kinnear talked to nufcTV today:

“It wasn’t ideal against Stoke on Saturday in midfield because we’d already lost Nicky and Damien before the game and then Danny got injured in the first-half,”

“But looking ahead to Sunday we’ll probably have Butt and Guthrie back and maybe, just maybe, Duff as well.”

“So hopefully we’ll be going down to Portsmouth with the strongest side that is available to us, apart from obviously Joey Barton who is still missing.”

“It will be a tough game, we know that, but I always go into matches looking to win and Sunday will be no different.”

It will be important to get both Guthrie and Butt back in central midfield, if we have any chance of winning the game on Sunday at Portsmouth. Nicky seems to get a lot of criticism, but he’s very experienced, and has played more than a few good games for Newcastle this season.

As far as Guthrie goes, we think he has the makings of an excellent player for the future, given the lad is just 21 years old. He’s very like young Frenchman Sebastien Bassong, in that he keeps getting games for the first team, which is exactly what both players need to become better at this level.

It will be an interesting game on Sunday, but only a win will make the Newcastle fans happy, because we’ve thrown too many points away at home.

Being without Duff  will not be a hardship on Sunday, as we have young Charles N’Zogbia, who looked just great in the first half last Saturday, so there’s no real reason to rush Damien back.

Comments very welcome.

Dont play Guthrie and Butt together !!!

They’re both way to defensive minded….we need some form of creativity in the middle.
Thats why we did better when barton came in…he could pick out a through ball.

Geremi had a good first half against stoke, set up the 2nd goal and was spraying some nice balls around.

Why would he not be given another chance ???

But has cost us about 4 results this season. He wins like 50% of tackles he goes for…its awful.

    GEREMI !! lol

    I’s go for:

Any three from Guthrie, Viduka, Duff or Taylor coming on second half depending on how game goes…..

BigLee jonas is the guy with our highest assists this season………lol…

Some of you are a bit strange arent ya

Anyway if we do play Butt then play Geremi or N’zog in the middle…if Zog get duff on the wing if fit…or maybe even martins.

Aslong as we have some form of Balanced central midfield. 4-3-3 wouldnt be bad either…but We’d have to play Xisco instead of Viduka as Kinnear says he aint fit enough yet. Then Maybe drop Owen just behind those two

Guinea Mag and Turkish Magpie – You’re not thinking in a very attack minded way are you? Geremi AND Butt!?

I wouldn’t like to see what would happen to us if we sit back against Portsmouth.

If you’re gonna go 4-3-3 you might as well start that way. Worked under KK.

Heron Geremi aint defensive anymore he’s to slow for that & hes more creative than any other options in centre mid. As Spyro pointed out..if you consider he largely set up our goal v Stoke also…he probably has more assists than any other player.
And he isnt starting many matches is he…so hes does something right.

    Ye, my bad.

Guthrie on the bench for this game, Im scared for him vs Diop.

Mainly because Guthrie is quite weak and kinda scared of the tackle.

how about Taylor as DM if butt does not recover in time ?
    Beye Colo Bassong Enrique
    Geremi Jonas Nzogbia
    Owen Martins

    Subs Harper , Edgar , Viduka , LuaLua , Xisco , Guthrie , Cacapa

Maybe we could turn Taylor into a better DM than he is central defender . He is a strong lad and could maybe read the game better and not get caught out of position in midfield .

Because Bassong & Colo are forming a good partnership at the back and we should give them a long run together . sitting taylor in front of them gives them more protection than playing him next to one of them .

There appears to be a misconception regarding teams / Newcastle playing with 2 defensive or holding midfielders.

This doesnt have to be boring or negative.

Arsenal use to play with Viera and Petit, niether of which you could call ‘attacking’.

But they did have to very good wingers who would cut in and make it a front 4 at times.

At Newcastle we have 2 decent holding midfielders and 2 hard working wingers in Jonas and Zog who are just as versitile as Ljunberg and Pieres were.

Look we’re in a dog fight and some fans are wanting free flowing football.

Well i’ll be honest i’d love to see attacking football game in game out. But if i had a choice between gritty football leading to a new dawn in the PL next season or passing our way into the Championship, then theres only one option.

Remember were not competing with the Man U’s and Arsenals.
We are ‘at the moment’ the same standard as:
all of which we have gained a grand total of 2 pionts against !

Thats the grim reality, what seperates us from those teams, is we can improve greatly, i doubt those teams can.

So for now when in Rome do as the Romans do.

Or another put it another way when in a relegation flight, play relegation football.

    Better news ?
The best news I would like to hear is they are both on there way to other teams, as one is past his sell by date the other will never be more than a bench player on any good team.
