Joe Kinnear has given out some good news today, as he expects both central midfielders Nicky Butt and Danny Guthrie to be fit for the game at Portsmouth on Sunday.
Danny Guthrie – fit for Sunday
Presumably it will also help both of them that our game is a day later on Sunday, which gives them that little bit extra time to be fully fit for the game.
Manager Joe Kinnear talked to nufcTV today:
“It wasn’t ideal against Stoke on Saturday in midfield because we’d already lost Nicky and Damien before the game and then Danny got injured in the first-half,”
“But looking ahead to Sunday we’ll probably have Butt and Guthrie back and maybe, just maybe, Duff as well.”
“So hopefully we’ll be going down to Portsmouth with the strongest side that is available to us, apart from obviously Joey Barton who is still missing.”
“It will be a tough game, we know that, but I always go into matches looking to win and Sunday will be no different.”
It will be important to get both Guthrie and Butt back in central midfield, if we have any chance of winning the game on Sunday at Portsmouth. Nicky seems to get a lot of criticism, but he’s very experienced, and has played more than a few good games for Newcastle this season.
As far as Guthrie goes, we think he has the makings of an excellent player for the future, given the lad is just 21 years old. He’s very like young Frenchman Sebastien Bassong, in that he keeps getting games for the first team, which is exactly what both players need to become better at this level.
It will be an interesting game on Sunday, but only a win will make the Newcastle fans happy, because we’ve thrown too many points away at home.
Being without Duff will not be a hardship on Sunday, as we have young Charles N’Zogbia, who looked just great in the first half last Saturday, so there’s no real reason to rush Damien back.
Comments very welcome.
