Barry Norman Hutchinson, 49, of Silver Lonnen, Fenham, Newcastle Upon Tyne, has pleaded guilty to ‘an offense of racist or obscene chanting’ under the Football Offenses Act 1991, and has been fined £315, including fees of £45.
Mido – racial abuse chants directed at him during Newcastle game
However magistrates did not ban Hutchinson from attending football matches in the UK, as football officials had expected.
His son Andrew Barry Hutchinson, was also charged, but has denied his involvement, but it’s hardly a good example the father is setting.
A Middlesbrough spokesman said today:
“We are disappointed that a banning order has not been issued in this case.” “It makes it very difficult for football clubs to have a robust anti-racism policy without the support of the courts.”
“Despite this setback, we will continue to be vigilant and supportive of the police in tackling all discriminatory and anti-social behavior.” “The individual concerned will also be banned from the Riverside Stadium.”
An FA counterpart also commented on the sentence:
“The FA is disappointed that a football banning order was not imposed in this case.”
“It is important to send out a strong message that racist and discriminatory chanting is totally unacceptable, and that anyone found guilty will face serious consequences.”
Hutchinson is a Newcastle supporter and will now be banned from St. James’ Park, as the club issued the following condemnation of the chanting, following the game at The Riverside Stadium on November 29th.
“Newcastle United will not tolerate any form of racist behavior and will continue to work closely with the authorities and anti-racism organizations to rid sport and society of racism.”
“The Club condemns any form of racist chanting and any individual found guilty of such an offense will be banned from St. James’ Park.”
What do you think about this?

Comment #106Punk Skunk..Unless those (low and behold you’ll probably turn around and say..eh..ya they..eh..are.) crowds of 50000 plus people all shouting what is clasified as awful abuse, but acceptable apparently, boardering on racism, but not technically there, awful, but mighn’t win a court case, which makes it perfectly ok apparently, then you can’t really relate.
The culture, the fans of English football, some of them are a joke. You’ve got the idiots chanting, then you’ve got the ones who say it’s acceptable, who are almost imo worse then the ones doing it. They are making it ok..which is letting it grow. It’s like diving in the Premiership, it’ s become acceptable if it’s not stamped out.
You our wee economy is in a state, worse then any of the EU countries at the minute. Now we’ve lost millions over night, if not billions because of the pork. The country is rocking back into the state it was in in the 80s..but I’m grateful, because at least we’re honest. At least when it comes to sport loyalty, honesty, pride..etc still count for something.
The same can’t be said about English football. It is the clows who were chanting who are making it a terrible thing to watch and it’s the ones who say it’s acceptable who are making it ten times worse, and the rest of us are suffering.

Comment #108I can’t believe any of this. Surely any single peron’s guilty of such a crime should be banned from any sort of football occasion for their entire life.
“guilty to ‘an offense of racist or obscene chanting'” brings shame upon the only football club that is dear to my heart. Personally the enitre occasion makes me sick and those guilty should have the book thrown at them. As a man, Mido is guilty of no crime, born equal as the rest of us. Whether he is Egyptian/Muslim casts no light on who he is as a person, so is clearly no grounds to base an attack on him.

Comment #114Wasn’t this man refering to Mido’s likeness to the shoe bomber? He wasn’t directing racist behaviour towards the player. I think obscene chanting yes, racism no.
Maybe thats why the man has not been banned.
I don’t condone his behaviour and he was silly but this happens at every game not just with Newcastle fans. Fact.
This lad has been made an example of I reckon. The media has labelled him a racist, but by the look of things, he has been done for obscene chanting by the courts. This is probably right IF what he was shouting is true about him resembling the shoe bomber. Anything directing towards Muslims I’d count him very lucky.

Comment #115Why are any comments made toward black or arabic footballers always construed as being racist comments…
Stop the sympathy kick, these are professional footballers and comments are going to be made toward them out of jest…
Just like us South Africans take blow up sheep to a cricket game to take the mickey out of Australians – its the same thing but you dont see them reporting racist behaviour… WHY???
Because they are bloody men, not, little babies looking for a sympathy kick.
Get over it for ###ts sake, grow some balls and get on with life…

Comment #116reillers – When did you start watching football? The reason I ask is because your comments imply that football fans and their chants are much worse than they used to be.
I don’t know what golden era of fans being civil to each other and chatting about the merits of plato and socrates over a scone and a cup of team you witnessed, but the modern football crowd is a lot more pc and considerate than when I first went to a live game in the early 80’s.
If the home fans weren’t abusing the away fans or the black players they would turn on themselves. If anything the modern football chant has evolved into something less offensive – eg..
Old “Geordie Boys” chant had the line –
We’ve come to shag your women and we’ve come to drink your beer.
The modern version is –
We’re going to win the premier league, were going to win the cup.
There are loads more but I’m not going through every example.
The point is that football crowds are actually a lot more civalised than they used to be and that causes a clash between the older fans and the new fans. The older fans who were used to hearing the really bad chants probably think the stuff about Mido is water off a ducks back where the modern fan is “shocked and appalled”.
If anyone wants to discuss why this is, I’m happy to put forward my views. I’ve got a bit of spare time today.

Comment #117i use the ‘at work’ rule – if I worked with someone who looked like Richard Reid would I be comfortable making a shoe bomber joke to them? no, I think certain people might take offense. a fat Eddie Murphy ? probably not.
but i DO work with someone that loks like Joe Pasquale & we rip the sh*t out of him all the time!
anyway to me Mido looks more like doctor Saresh in Heroes but don’t expect a rendition of the Bonnie Tyler soft rock hit at St James any time soon
