There are reports today that 32 year-old Real Betis defender Juanito is seeking the contract of his life away from the Primera Divison club.
Junaito – 5’11” central defender from Real Betis
Juanito’s current contract expires in the summer, and this has sparked rumours of interest in him, and yes, of course, one of the clubs mentioned is Newcastle United.
But Juanito is 32 years old, so he is hardly one for the future, and while he is keen to stay at Betis, he will also look elsewhere if he cannot get the contract hge is seeking from his current club.
Juanito said in the Daily Star today:
“It has to be the contract of my life because I’m in great form. I want to be paid what I deserve.”
“My first option will always be Betis. I want to retire here after the three or four years I have left in football.”
“If it doesn’t happen I will find another place.”
Juanito is a central defender has been at Real Betis since 2001, and has played 224 times for the club and scored 18 goals. He has also represented Spain 25 times since 2002 and scored 3 goals.
Juanito represented Spain at Euro 2004 and 2008, playing in the 2-1 win over Greece, and in addition played in the 2006 World Cup.
But Joe Kinnear has already said he will not reinforce the central part of the defense at Newcastle, since he is happy to have Coloccini, Bassong and Steven Taylor fighting it out for the two central defensive positions.
We’d be surprised if there’s much truth in this report, and think we can do better, and bring in some younger players, and full backs have to be the defensive priority.
