Newcastle’s great goalkeeper Shay Given seems especially wary that Newcastle United may well be in another relegation dog-fight this season.
Shay Given – we’ve had too many draws
Shay talked to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today:
“There’s no better time to start winning down there than now.” “Portsmouth have a decent team and a strong squad of players.”“It won’t be an easy game, but there aren’t any easy away Premier League games.”
“But we have come away with two draws in the last two away games, and hopefully we can build on it or get a victory, which we need at the moment.”
“Crouchie is a handful and they have the classic little and large combination in him and Defoe.” “They have been scoring goals as well.”
“We know it’s a tough game and they have some good players.” “But for all that we know we have some good players ourselves.”
If we look at our results they are not too bad, but we’ve just had far too many draws, and with wins now 3 points, wins are what clubs need more than ever to progress up the league.
Theoretically a team could be unbeaten for the season, and still end up with just 38 points, so draws are certainly not what they used to be, when wins were just worth 2 points. But it’s a long time since a home win and an away draw would almost guarantee winning the league.
“It’s true we are unbeaten.” “But have drawn too many games.” “Looking back at Wigan and Stoke, if we had hung on then we’d have an extra four points.”
“It would be looking a lot better.” “It’s all ifs and buts and hindsight, but we need to get the points on the board in the next few games.”
Shay’s right and we need to put together a string of wins and a draw in between those would be OK, but not drawing every game, especially when we get our noses in front in games.
