Michael Owen Contract Decision This Tuesday?

There seems to be lots of news today surrounding Michael Owen and his contract at Newcastle, with the transfer window in January fast approaching. Mainly because Joe Kinnear has talked a lot about Michael’s situation.

Newcastle Manager and captain together

Let’s say one thing right now, that if Joe can get Michael Owen to sign before the end of the season for Newcastle, it will be a huge coup for the Irishman.

And that in itself, with some good results on the run-in could endear him to Newcastle fans, whether or not he has a long term future on Tyneside.  Whatever happens to Joe in the future we think he will be remembered fondly by fans, for giving the job all he had, when the club was at absolute rock bottom.

Joe said today:

“We have heard lots of things, that Michael’s agent has had lots of clubs go on to him.” “Obviously, they will want to know what type of contract we are going to offer him.”

“I won’t go into those details now, but we will be offering him what we consider an excellent contract considering the climate of what is happening around all football clubs.”

“But it will be up to Michael to make that decision.” “I am pretty confident that Shola Ameobi, Steve Harper and Nicky Butt will sign, it’s now just down to Michael.”

Kinnear has made absolutely no secret of the fact, just like Kevin Keegan before him, that he wants Michael to stay on at the Tyneside club, because both managers are convinced that Michael is still one of the very best, and they see that in training every day.

Joe continued:

“Michael is well aware of that, so is his agent.” “They are well aware of my feelings on this, but the ball is in his court. ”

“I will find out, hopefully, on Tuesday.”

It’s very good the Newcastle Board have finally done their work on the players’ contracts and want to tie the players down on new contracts, before January comes, but it may be too late on Owen.

We’re not sure if there will be any decision made on Tuesday by Owen and his agent,, other than Michael wanting to talk to other clubs in January.

We’d be surprised if we heard anything else, but it would be very good to sign Shola Ameobi, Steve Harper and Nicky Butt, to new contracts, that’s for sure. Two local lads in there, which is good,  and the signings will add a little bit more stability to the club.

In retrospect, what a turnaround these last few months have been for striker Shola Ameobi, who is again showing some good form and plenty of spirit for his home town team – good for him.

Comments welcome.

The only way MO will sign is if we offer him a hell of a lot more money than other clubs.

If one of the top 4 clubs come in for him, theres no way they will give him more than 100 grand a week.

NUFC are the biggest club outside the top 4, so why wouldent he sign if the money is right?

I hope he signs anyway, but im not holding my breath

It will be interesting if he does sign new deal with us how many peoples views on him will change? a lot of people especially on this blog seem to think they know all about what Michael is thinking eg: he just wants to leave & he only cares about playing for England & not toon! but if he signs on that dotted line they’ll be some of the first on here giving what a legend lets build team around him etc, fickle hypocrits! he IS one of the best around & here’s hoping it happens!!!

Owen will only sign if no other team matches his wages outside of the top 4-5. If he does go I will be sad to see him go as he his our best striker and one of the best in the prem, but a little angry that he has jumped ship at the earliest chance especially after how the club have spent good money on his many rehab’s after various injuries not least the famous one for England when he had hardly kicked a ball for us. I feel he should sign for us to pay back the faith and money the club has ploughed into him.!!!

What a bunch of negative pansies some of you lot are. MO won’t leave, he has everything to gain by signing what will be a good contract being offered. He will win the adulation of the crowd if he shows this level of commitment. Only Pool, Arsenal and City would potentially move for him. But he is hardly going to misplace Torres and they have just invested 20m into a Robbie Keane contract. Arsenal already have 2 great strikers and his style of play is not compatible with theirs. Man City have Robinho and Jo, but could do with a fox in the box like Owen. But why leave us for a club that could prove to be even more unstable similar to how Chelsea was upon the time the Russian took over. He will stay, I have no doubt of that.

Tell ya what, if anything we should be looking forward for Summer to see the deadwood finally get chucked out. They werent worth anything anyways and even if we could get 1m each for them their high salaries are around 3-5 million a year anyways. The transfer fee is paid off monthly like wages, so sometimes when you get rid of a bad player you are infact still benefiting from net profitability. The “players” out of contract this summer are Butt, Harper, Gonzalez, Ameobi, Cacapa, andViduka. Viduka is on ATLEAST 65k a week. Cacapa as a free agent would also be raking in around 45k. Ameobi perhaps 30k. Butt 55k. I would be delighted to see the back of them all bar Harper. However, for Steves sake I think he should move to a premierleague club and be their number one allowing our star in the making Krul to get some exposure as Givens prodigy. Owen will sign, he is too big an asset for us.

Do we really need to exten Butt? Seriously, for me he is one of the reason we are in a relegation battle for years now…

Replace him with a younger hungry holding midfielder and partner him with Barten and we will be fine!!

On the one hand MO could remind himself how often he’s been injured, how much we paid for him and his wages – and that he owes loyalty to us for those reasons. He need only look to his friend Shearer for inspiration on remaining loyal to a club in the face of adversity (when it comes to not winning things, anyway).

On the other you can see why MO would want to be with a more winning coub right now, in his late 20s.

He should wait til the summer to see what’s happening.

I wish JK would stop mentioning “relegation fight” etc. Though we are in a position we don’t want to be, you only have to see what a couple of decent results (e.g – Fulham) can do.
We should definitely be very aware of our situation but be optimistic. It’s good that JK says MO won’t be elaving in Jan though (hope it’s true).

I wouldn’t mind replacing owen with defoe.
Defoe is clinical, younger and faster!
Martins and Defoe could do a Yorke & Cole!

We’ll hear nothing on Tuesday, me-thinks. Owen will almost certainly want to go, but he will probably be too cowardly to face the Toon fans with the truth, so the will probably continue to string us along. I expect him to agree a pre-contract with another club before the summer, but I think he will keep it secret, and only make it public after the end of the season, so he wont have to face the fans…

I really think that some of you are being a bit harsh on MO. He has constantly shown loyalty to the club and has obviously felt guilt over his injuries. If we were in a position where we were in a higher position and a relegation fight wasn’t possibly looming I am pretty confident that he would be signing. However, any player that is of his quality wants to play at the top and right now we are in a danger of being relegated (I’m not saying we will be, there’s lots of time left). Personally if I was in his position there is no way I would be signing a contract right now unless there was a guarantee that I could get out of it if nufc doesn’t rise above the drop.

No one will here a thing until the summer about this. He won’t go now cos he can arrange a bigger signing on fee and wages as a free. JK won’t let him go now anyway, so forget about things until July. The only way he will sign is if 1. Shearer comes in and 2 if he gets a long term injury -again.Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
