Upson To Newcastle? – Not Likely

There are some reports surfacing today that Joe Kinnear wants to make West Ham’s Matthew Upson, his first signing at Newcastle United.

Matthew Upson to Newcastle – very unlikely

While it is true that Newcastle have fancied Upson for some time now, and when he’s played for the England side recently he’s looked a good player, center-back is not where we need to be spending £8M in January.

The top two positions that need strengthening are left back and central midfield, and they have to be the two top priorities in January.

Joe says he expects to bring in three players on loan through the end of the season so we don’t know if that would mean Upson moving over to Tyneside on loan, but we doubt it.

Joe Kinnear said a few days ago that he will have funds to sign a couple of £6m players, but it would take more than £6M to get Upson.

And that would not be money well spent right now by Newcastle as we have Coloccini, Taylor and Bassong fighting it out for the two central defensive positions, although Upson may be a good buy in the summer.

At that time we should be looking at getting a 4th top center-back to the club, as we expect Cacapa and Edgar to be free agents in the summer, and move away from the club.

Reports suggest West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola, who is under increasing pressure at Upton Park, because of poor results, is being told that he will be able to re-invest a certain amount of any transfer fees to reshape his new squad.

The 6’1″ tall 29 year-old, who came through the Arsenal Youth Academy, played 113 times with 6 goals for Birmingham City from 2003 through 2007, and since then he’s played 44 times at West Ham with one goal.

But we’d be very surprised if a deal for Upson is struck in January, very surprised indeed, although he’s more than a decent player.

It will however be interesting for Newcastle fans to see the caliber of player Joe signs for Newcastle in January, as it will tell us the size of his ambitions at the famous Tyneside club.

But right now we’re just pleased that he seems to have convinced Mike Ashley to sign five new players in the January window, and now he and Dennis Wise need to execute on those plans.

What do you think about Upson?

Good player, but he’ll only bring more confusion about our selection.
Leave Steven Taylor to rotate with Bassong, and in case you wanna replace Cacapa, just buy someone for not more than 2 mill.

.com only post up rumours if they know for a fact that there is truth in it, Guthrie being the last one a few weeks before he moved here.

I hadn’t heard anything about it but I’m willing to believe Niall and Biffa on this one.

Wouldn’t see any sence in it.

Top priority is a holding midfielder to play alongside Barton! A leftfooted defender would be also nice. That’s what we need desperately!

I have to laugh at Tony Adams comments about Steven Taylor ‘magnificent’. I tell you what Tony if he’s that magnificent we’ll swap you him for Distin or Campbell, with comments like that I think we have good chance beating Pompey on Sunday.

I’ve put this link on here before, really want this shirt to go to a geordie! I paid good money for this shirt, hence the price. Had it valued also and I have it on there cheap, know it doesn’t seem it! If none of you can afford it, its worth a look anyway as a toon fan 😉

If we bring him, then you can’t have 2 excelent CB’s on the bench, but we could play Coloccini as a DM in that case.

    …………………………..Given…………………………….
    Beye………Coloccini………..Upson……..Enrique..
    …………………………Coloccini………………………….
    ….Jonas…………………………………………N’Zogbia.

Didn’t Joe come out and say that we’re not signing any central defenders?

But then again didn’t Keegan not want South Americans? However who was buying when he was here is debatable.

You can’t have too many good central defenders though, tbh Coloccini and Upson would be rather good, wouldn’t it?

Looks like Mareque for left back, and god knows who for midfield.

We dont need Upson, he is ageing and injury prone, not to mention £7mil can be spent better elsewhere and we need to strengthen 6/7 others positions before we strengthen CB.

    Upson can play at leftback.

If he does come to St James Park and play at LB,
we’ll have four very solid defenders. 🙂

We need a good cm before anything else, we lack creativity. 8mil on Upson in Jan wouldn’t be the right move for us – maybe in the summer though.

And i don’t think that he is comfortable enough at left back to warrant the 8mil. From the sounds of it we need the money for a different position.

7M for an injury prone player is not what is needed at this time. He is a very good central defender and would not say no if he came, just don’t think we need to spend that kind of money on a central defender at this time.

We need defensive midfielder and attacking midfieldr urgent and competition/cover at left back….

Other two replacements will be dependant on who leaves in January; i.e. Edgar, Cacapa, Smith, Ameobi, maybe Owen!

he got EPL experience, england international…i dont mind having him on the squad.

collocini, taylor, bassong, upson…competition will be good for the team. the problem befor bassong arrive is that steven taylor always guarantee a first eleven

    I would say 29, almost 30 is aging !!!
Upson fits the typical player photoofit of the last few years

    1) extremely Injury prone
    2) Aging yes at nearly 30!!
    3) way too much in transfer fees
    4) Huge wages
    5) We already have players in that position.

Kinnear is extremely mediocre and I would not trust him at all in the transfer market.
We would someone ruthless and in touch.

Upson is no doubt a good player, had an outstanding game for the national side, last outing.
Would he be a good buy for the toon ?
Yeah if the price was right, say 4-5million, any more would be better spent on that key player most badly needed, a midfielder who can organize the team, who can put his foot in and play that killer pass and score the occasional goal.
Not easy to find but worth spending money on.
Face it Joey Barton is never going to be that player and Guthrie is only a bench warmer.
As far as a left back we have one of the best prospects in the PL “Bassong” for those who noticed it the guy has the making of a better left back than a CB.
He has pace in going forward and only lacks an end product, which can be easily ratified with coaching.
I really think our main requirements are an attacking and defensive inside midfield pairing.
And of course would`nt hurt to have a few young prospects as backups to a squad still thin on the ground.

Upson is class but Id be suprised and shocked if we managed to sign anyone? The last I could remember was our owner was trying to sell us.
I hope I am proved wrong and If so id love Upson to sign as he is quality. Play him alongside Colo with Bassong and Taylor as reserves. Still need a RB and LB to challenge Beye and Enrique.
