There are some reports surfacing today that Joe Kinnear wants to make West Ham’s Matthew Upson, his first signing at Newcastle United.
Matthew Upson to Newcastle – very unlikely
While it is true that Newcastle have fancied Upson for some time now, and when he’s played for the England side recently he’s looked a good player, center-back is not where we need to be spending £8M in January.
The top two positions that need strengthening are left back and central midfield, and they have to be the two top priorities in January.
Joe says he expects to bring in three players on loan through the end of the season so we don’t know if that would mean Upson moving over to Tyneside on loan, but we doubt it.
Joe Kinnear said a few days ago that he will have funds to sign a couple of £6m players, but it would take more than £6M to get Upson.
And that would not be money well spent right now by Newcastle as we have Coloccini, Taylor and Bassong fighting it out for the two central defensive positions, although Upson may be a good buy in the summer.
At that time we should be looking at getting a 4th top center-back to the club, as we expect Cacapa and Edgar to be free agents in the summer, and move away from the club.
Reports suggest West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola, who is under increasing pressure at Upton Park, because of poor results, is being told that he will be able to re-invest a certain amount of any transfer fees to reshape his new squad.
The 6’1″ tall 29 year-old, who came through the Arsenal Youth Academy, played 113 times with 6 goals for Birmingham City from 2003 through 2007, and since then he’s played 44 times at West Ham with one goal.
But we’d be very surprised if a deal for Upson is struck in January, very surprised indeed, although he’s more than a decent player.
It will however be interesting for Newcastle fans to see the caliber of player Joe signs for Newcastle in January, as it will tell us the size of his ambitions at the famous Tyneside club.
But right now we’re just pleased that he seems to have convinced Mike Ashley to sign five new players in the January window, and now he and Dennis Wise need to execute on those plans.
What do you think about Upson?
