Danny Guthrie – What A Buy For Newcastle

Danny Guthrie had a good game for Newcastle yesterday, scoring his first goal for the club in competitive play, as he buzzed around midfield, hardly ever giving the ball away, and he was one reason the lads came good in the second half.

Danny Guthrie – great game yesterday – what a buy this boy has been

And if Danny had been OK for the full game last week we would have won that game too, because this lad is improving all the time, and what a buy he is turning out to be.

In time Danny can become a terrific midfield player, because he plays the easy ball, is a great passer of a ball, can tackle, and reads the game so well. Why he isn’t already playing for the England Under-21 side is now a bit of a mystery, because he’s certainly good enough.

And he chose a great time to get his first goal for the Newcastle side, after 89 minutes yesterday, thanks to good work on the right by Shola Ameobi who had come on for the hard working Oba Martins.

Afterwards, his manager Joe Kinnear, who looked thrilled at the end of the game yesterday, challenged the 21 year-old to make it the first of many in the famous black and white shirt of Newcastle.

Joe said:

“Danny’s goal to make it 3-0 was the icing on the cake for us and it was a terrific move.” “I’m really pleased for Danny as he’s been an unsung hero for us.”

“He’s a great kid and I think he is a good box-to-box player.” “I’d love him to score a goal like that in every game.”

“But Danny is such a hardworking player and I’d like really to see him get into the opposition box a bit more as he is a decent finisher.”

“Hopefully that goal will lead to better things for him. He took it exceptionally well.”

The goal was well set up by Shola, who has also had a resurgence in his career under Joe Kinnear, and Ameobi is certain to sign an extension at his home town club this week, and most fans are fine with that, after Shola’s good play and excellent commitment to the team this season.

Danny Guthrie, Fabricio Coloccini, Jonas Gutierrez and Seb Bassong were all outstanding yesterday, and they were all brought in during the summer.

Same again in the January transfer window please. 😀

Him and Barton would be amazing. It is like playing Gerrard and Lampard in the middle of the park.

It’s just a matter of time of development. He’s a bit similar to Gerrard. I hope he will become a good box-to-box player in the squad and form a good partnership with Barton.

    Agreed ^^

Barton & Guthrie in the Center of midfield would be excellant. I love Guthries determination and his effort! He is also 100% committed to every single tackle! This isnt just yesterdays game, its all the time.

When Barton has afew games back under his belt and is firing on all cylinders i think we will have astrong CM partnership.

The Zog and Jonas on the wings is tasty aswell.

Looking good after last performance, Lets hope that this carries over to the Spurs game this wekend…

Were we as the might geordie faithfull will have to Tear the roof down.

Was I watching a different game to everyone else? I’m a fan of Guthrie’s but I don’t think he had a good game against Portsmouth until the last 20 mins.

I know the general feeling about Dennis Wise on many of the forums but in his role of managing player recruitment he has recruited, Bassong, Guthrie, Colo and Jonas. And none of the players that have gone i.e. Milner have exactly set the world alight.

Not a bad job i’d say!!

Tim spot on mate. The irony is that Wise has done very little wrong other than to be used as a reason for Ashley to prevent KK from having more power at the club. He and his recruitment team have found us some great buys at great prices and all have settled in much quicker than you work expect. I feel a little sorry for the guy to be honest.

Eds right the summer signings, not the last minute panics, have been excellent signings.

Hats off to Wise etc who were invovled in those deals.

I just wonder what things would be like if Wise and Keegan could have worked together.

Its funny, i have said for a while that Ashleys legacy will not be complete until a few years. With the likes of Guthrie and Bassong making great strides and thats not mentioning the very exciting youngsters Ranger, Spears, Donaldson, Lua Lua, Kadar and Tozer.

We may look back upon Ashleys time and think although he made monumental mistakes with the first team, his long term views were fantastic.

I know we need 1st team players, but i hope we dont take our eye of the ball when it comes to the future too. I’ve never been more excited about our youngsters.

typicsal toon fans getting well carried away with this win, we didn’t play well at all in the first half and pompey (as well as us) had plenty of chances to get something out of the game.

things changed for the better in the second half, but luck was probably on our side today, and gave the lads the confidence to go on wth the game.

that said both butt and guthrie should not be first team in the pl, both decent squad members, one too young but with potential, the other too old, but with a lot of valuable experience and knowledge to share with our younger crop of lads.

still badly needing a real class attacking midfielder as shown clearly in the first half of the game and well… the season, and will continue to be shown for the remainder of this under achieving season.

chuffed we won of course, but lets see it for what it was lads…..

JK said we need a Keane/Viera type player, GREAT a manager finally sense that how important to have a decent defensive midfielder( not BUTT) in a squad.
i doubt Barton and Guthrie can play alongside.
who will defend, who will attack remains a question IMO.

You are right about not getting carried away as the match could have gone either way if the first goal had gone to Portsmouth, however with regard to Butt and Guthrie you are wrong.

Butt would easily get into half the teams in the league, we should offer him a years extension as he’s a usefull player to have on the bench.

Guthrie is another matter, he’s a very tallented youngster, like Bassong and N’Zogbia and needs regular first team football to develop fully. All you have to look at is some of the players we’ve had over the years and let go for all the wrong reasons.

Barton and Guthrie would be most peoples starting CM’s however I’d love to se a good central attacking midfielder like Kranjcar or Ireland or Martin Petrov signed to open up the play and give us more options

Great win; 3 goals and 3 points although we rode our luck at times.

Guthrie is one for the future as well as doing well for the final 20 minutes of yesterdays game. I still believe we need two experienced PL central midfield players that will walk into our first team allowing Guthrie, Butt, Geremi and Barton as back-up for the long hard season ahead….

premiership manager- agree we should extend butts contract for reasons i said above, and never thought different. also am happy with guthrie here, but feel we need someone a bit better in the midfield on a weekly basis at the moment.

yes they would be starters in other teams, i guess i really meant they shouldn’t be the best we should be aiming for. i think we need better players in the middle of the park than what we currently have, it’s the all important part of the pitch.

and it’s clear if you look at well… were we are in the table that at times this season (plenty of times i might add) we have been over run in the middle of the park and have had a real lack of ideas and momentum going forward.

not saying the boys are completely to blame for our plight, of course not, but we need to be better in this area of the park, so i wouldn’t say i’m wrong, but your welcome to your opinion.

Glass still half empty, Clinta? Cheer up lad. You’re right that our CM is not the best in the land – but that is hardly news. Give the lads credit for yesterday. Adams messed up when he took off Richard Hughes for Kanu in midfield and our 2 lads ran riot after that.

Great result yesterday…When praise is justified then praise should be given! I am not the bigest jose enrique fan in the world as most of you will know but i thought he played very well yesterday! I wanted to get that in because when he does not play well i am not slow to point that out!

On Guthrie; we have a player here who does not hide on the pitch and is a constant option for anyone on the ball! He wants theball all the time and knocks it around very well! Regardless of the fact that it wasnt a nice tackle in the hull game; for me that day he showed abit of passion and that is something i like in a player (however misguided his anger was).

Kevin Keegan pointed out guthrie as aplayer he wanted to bring into the club and watched him several times last year. Let’s not get to carried away with praise for “little” Dennis! What about some of his other handy work….Xisco, Nacho, selling milner, ATTEMPTING TO SELL OWEN & BARTON on transfer deadline day!!!!

short memories…..Keep it up BIG JOE

I’m sick of trying to remind people that Wise is the ‘Director of football’. It was Jimenez who scouted our players – Wise only negotiated the contracts!

And one other point – Guthrie was one of Keegan’s choice.

Good game yesterday, could have gone either way in the first half, it was ours in the second. No question.

Nicky Butt can still do a job for us, and Danny Guthrie grows with every game he plays. I’m glad we have them both. Also, I’m glad Enrique had a good game (he almost scored what would have been an absolute peach as well), as I really rate him. I know he’s had some dodgy games, but he is young for a defender and is our only out and out left back anyway.

I don’t like Denis Wise, but it was HIS scouting team that got us Jonas, Colo and Seb at the very least.

The events of the past six months are starting to have less of an effect on our team and the football is starting to be enjoyable again. We’ve had some wins, kept some clean sheets and haven’t come away with no points that often.

I don’t care who buys our players, as long as they are of the quality of those bought in the summer. I’d also like to Xisco get more of a shot, though he’ll probably find it hard to get a place when he comes back from injury.

Finally, 51 times, if you can’t be civil, don’t post. You’ve made yourself unpopular already and I don’t understand why you are always so vindictive. Give it a rest lad.

…At last, someone(JK) that does just that!..

…Young players will never come good if they are dropped everytime they make a mistake!..

Butt is tooo old! We need to replace him ASAP. If we can’t then and ONLY then we should offer him a 1 year contract extension. Guthrie on the other hand has great potential and hardly gives the ball away. His vision is excellent and has a good touch on the ball every time. He looks like he’s developing into our own young Lampard 🙂
Barton and Guthrie in the Center is a must for our Midfield partnership. Butt is a good sqaud player just like Geremi and Smith. We need a Midfielder with flair, strength and a great passer of the ball in the centre of the pitch NOT BUTT!

I agree with JP…from The Rock Butt is tooooooo old and we need more decent defensive midfielder. Also we need good attacking midfielder someone who can keep the ball in his legs and passing the forwards properly and they will score more goals very game.I think aimar was a good solution too bad we let him go to benfica. And maybe we should give Xisko a chance and if he doesn’t play well then we should jugde him,not now it’s too early.Remember he he score on his first game for as.

Sure it`s nice to win one, but the truth of the matter is Guthrie would have trouble making it too the bench of any top 4 team.
