Newcastle’s Subs Bench To Get Even Stronger

Joe Kinnear was finally able to name a subs bench of Steve Harper, Steven Taylor, Claudio Cacapa, Geremi, Damien Duff, Mark Viduka and Shola Ameobi at Fratton Park yesterday, as the competition for places heats up at Newcastle United.

Joe Kinnear – increaased competition for places at Newcastle

Joe said after the game yesterday:

“There’s no doubt that was the strongest subs bench I’ve been able to name since I came here so hopefully things are gradually coming together for us.”

“It was a strong bench and I’m sure there will be people looking at it and wondering why certain players aren’t starting.” “But I’ve always been one to keep players in the team if they have the shirt and they are performing well.”

“I will have some hard decisions to make but it’s good to have that problem rather than injuries picking the team for you.” “We’ve got a busy time coming up so it’s important to have as many of the lads available.”

Steven Taylor cannot get back into the side simply because Sebastien Bassong is playing so very well, and Mark Viduka is not fully fit yet. Irishman Damien Duff will need to fight for his place back from young Frenchman Charles N’Zogbia too.

But it’s good to see the bench getting strong again, and come the end of January it should be even stronger, once Joe has done his work in the transfer market, with the help of Dennis Wise.

We even expect an unchanged side for the game against Tottenham on Sunday because after such a good team performance yesterday, it would be unfair if any player lost their place.

If we have any sense Claudio Cacapa, Geremi, and Mark Viduka should all be replaced by young players during the transfer window as they are over rated, over paid and do not offer value for money.

If a good offer for Amobi comes in we should also consider letting him go, however, given that there’s a strong possibility that Owen could go we need to be very carefull regarding our strikers and options.

I would have only made one change from the bench yesterday.

That would have been Kadar for Cacapa, not only is Kadar better but he can play LB too.

I’m so pleased that the ref didn’t show to the penalty spot after Butt’s handball in the air…that would have costed us dearly.
Btw,i just looked at the disciplinary table and we are improving on that front,we’re 3rd now but we still need a lot to catch up Fulham.
I hope they get 2 red cards in the next game against Boro 🙂

Credit where credit is due for Wise. He has found us some good players. I’d love to get rid of Smith, Edgar, Capaca and Viduka. free up some wages and off load some dead wood.

Shame about Rich Money leaving for Swindon, if that proves to be the case. The Academy has been doing very well of late. Thomo off to join Clarkie, Faz and Steve Black at Huddersfield (our new feeder club?). Guess our backroom staff have to be aware of the instability at NUFC and therefore re their current jobs.

    How’s Oba today. Any news?

I am glad Shola has improved under Uncle Joe – and he made Guthrie’s goal too. Why are we allegedly interested in Upson? Baines I can understand, and even a gritty midfielder, but another central defender of just above average ability? Once we are reasonably safe Joe must give LuaLua and Ranger and Kadar an outing in the EPL surely?

My opinion is that we need to keep Smith at least till Summer and see how he plays for JK.
Maybe JK could do wonders with Smith like he did with Shola, but only as a CM……nothing else!

Agree TT. surely its time to show a bit of confidence on Kadar/Tozer instead of persisting with Cacapa who is obviously not good enough.

I thought Belhadj looked more than useful at LB yesterday – on loan at Pompey from Lens until summer. Anyone think the same?

Strength in depth of the central midfield is poor. We need experienced PL players to come in and improve the first team, not just to sit on the bench….

i think kinnear is getting the best out of many of our ‘deadwood’ players….just look at ameobi!! so who knows he could well do the same for smith, i reckon smith is his kind of player (a fighter, but not much else unfortunately), and may not want to sell him in janurary, and who knows this could be good for newcasyle. it was only last september we were begging ipswitch to take ameobi, now look at him, the same could happen for smith……….afterall he must have something if alex fergusion bought him for 7m and moyes wants him aswell

Sav – No, not at left-back, great player at wing-back or on the wing, but he looks lost as a standard fullback.

Fostino…..Thats exactly my point about Smith.
On the other hand,i hope Smith wont make too many bookings cos i really want us to finish on top of the disciplinary table 🙂

Disagree, I expect Duff back into the team instead of Zoggy…it seems to me that Zoggy is a lot stronger when comes on in the middle of the second half to make the break through with his energetic runs.

From start on I think he hasn’t yet owned the starting place against Duff.

For the last flucking time…..i’ll be upset if we don’t sell Taylor. I think its phenomenal that people still rate him, hopefully we can get upwards of 5 mil.

Honestly, if you don’t think he’s a bad defender all you have to do is look at the goals allowed when Steven Taylor is playing. Thats it, just look its ridiculous. Most recent example is the last home game. What happened? Oh yeah Taylor came on at half and we game up 2 second half goals.
