Will Michael Owen Stay At Newcastle?

Michael Owen again showed his quality yesterday by getting the all important first goal with a nice finish from another wonderful through ball by Argentine Jonas Gutierrez.

Michael Owen – after scoring Newcastle’s vital first goal yesterday

It looks like this week is contract signing week at Newcastle United and we expect Nicky Butt, Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi to sign new contracts at the club.

Of course the big one is with Michael Owen, and we understand that meeting will take place with Michael and his agents tomorrow, at which Newcastle’s new contract offer will be made known to him.

Whether he will accept the bid or wait until January to see what else comes up, we have no idea, but we’d like him to commit himself to the Tyneside club.

We’re running a new poll on our home page asking whether you think he will sign a new contract for Newcastle. Notice it’s not what you want him to do, but what you think he will do. While you’re in the poll corner make sure you let us have your votes on the other active polls – thanks.

There’s also a new petition being launched to try to keep Michael at the club, so if you want to sign it here it is.

Other players’ contracts that run out in the summer are those of Claudio Cacapa, David Edgar and Mark Viduka, and we don’t expect Newcastle to offer new contracts to the first two.

It’s also probably a toss up whether they will offer an extension to Mark Viduka, simply because of all his injuries, over the last 18 months, while he’s been at Newcastle.

If Steve Harper signs, as expected, we would expect Tim Krul to want to move on from the club, maybe in January, to get better first team opportunities elsewhere.

Shay Given has a good 5 years left at the top level, as does Steve Harper.  We think Joe could get £2M for the youngster in January.

Finally, some disappointing news today in that we have been disqualified from the SoccerLens awards , due to some of our readers voting more than once.

A reader let me know about this a couple of weeks back and I let Ahmed Bilal know at SoccerLens immediately.

Today he announced the results and although we had most votes in the Best Blog Community, we were disqualified because of some illegal voting .

Well you never get anything good by cheating so let’s not do that next year.

Upward and onward.

Ooh, I know the answer ………

No. And I dont think its that big a deal…

Sell Owen, buy Zaki : )

    Oba and Zaki up front.

Then because Portsmouth are in financial crap we can put in an offer for Krankjar or even one of Crouch of Defoe. (please dont tell me they arnt good they have both got 9 goals this season)…
So there we have Zaki (ST), Krankjar (MD) and then we can bid for Leighton Baines to complete a pretty decent squad…

We are still in trouble with signing players. Why because the poison dwarf is still in charge of signing any new or current players and he has Ashleys ear. Why can’t he understand we the fans of the club want him to get lost. Run back to London and ruin someone elses club. Sunderland maybe!!!!!

If we can get something for Viduka this January,i think we need to sell him and offer Owen a new 3 year contract.

    Players out:

    Carroll- Loan
    Cacapa-Sell
    Edgar- Sell
    Viduka – Sell

For some bizarre reason I have a good feeling he will sign.

Now, Im not his greatest fan but its worth it just for the fact we’d have to spend loads to replace him.

Unlucky on the award Ed – but you’ve got such a large, devoted and organised fan base here that it’s only a matter of time before you get what was rightfully yours. It’s a top blog.

P.S. Owen to stay after much hand wringing from Ashley.

Nightfall…..I would have put them 3 aswell but i don’t think its a good idea to get rid of so many players in such a short period of time cos we wont have enough time to replace them.
If it was Summer TW then that’s perfectly fine by me.

Whilst I’m a big fan of Kranjcar, do we really need another left winger? Surely we need another right winger, a centre mid and a stand in left back before we start worrying about a position we’ve got 3 potential candidates for (Zog, Duff N’ Jonas when he’s not on the right)

i think that if we can offer him around 100 grand a week and also include a relegation clause where he is free to go if we go down would perhaps swing it. plus just get rid of viduka, let him go, regardless of how good he is, the bottom line is = he never plays, period. so get rid of the vid and give owen a good deal with a get out of jail clause. it may work but i fear the little genius will be off cum summer.

I think he’ll sign as well for some weird reason. I think he loves being the main man, captain and superstar of our team and I think he’s pretty settled here unless one of the ‘big 4’ come in I think he’ll stick

How do sky sports know he has been offerred a deal. The article is non specific and could be speculation.

Anyway I do hope that MO does sign a new deal. Ive been stuck on the mindset for months that he will be off.

I cant see another club who will pay his wages. Poss Everton or Man City but cant see them offerring him. Well maybe Everton but they are skint arnt they. He doesnt look like he would fit at Citey. I know that sounds weird to say but Im sure someone will understand what I mean.

Here he has Captaincy for one. But is that enough to stay or is it all about the green of cash.

Im a bit sick of all the press highlighting that he scored. The score was 0 – 3 – Martins scored and Guthrie a beut.

Lets have good news but think will wait to see what gets offerred. Im betting he will wait to see what happens.

I have been saying for months, we will NOT be relegated. Blackburn, Stoke, West Ham, West Brom & Sunderland are all more likely to go down than us this season.

I agree spyro with the teams listed above, i also think Bolton and Fulham have got a better chance than us of going down despite making better starts than us, i think we willfinish about 13th this season.

Never say never. With a few changes in January we should be alright. As for Owen, I think he’s going to wait to see what else he can get. At the end of the day, he’ll want what’s best for him, his family and his horses. I hope he stays though. The last couple of weeks have shown just how much we need him.

i don’t think we should be selling the amount of players as some people want, surely we should build on our small squad not decrease it even more. i would be happy to see cacapa but apart from that, i tkink we need the cover. summer a better time to get rid of the deadwood

Liverpool are a funny side. They play better football when Torres is absent but they cannot put away their chances. When Torres plays they become a hell of a lot more predictable, but are a lot more clinical in front of goal. It is the same as Chelsea with or without Drogba

out of the team yesterday, it was amazing to hear that form the starting 11, only martins and owen had scored in the league so far (course guthrie come up with one aswell), we need more of our midfielders popping up with a few goals and even defenders from set-pieces

I would love MO to stay! If fit for the rest off the season i would expect him to score between 15-20 league goals; currently on 7 and missed alot of games and probably still isnt fully fit!

On the liverpool game; Last year torres abosulety raped us at st. James!!! David Rozenhaal probably didnt know what day it was by the end of the match after being so dizzy from being turned inside out for 90mins (thank heavens we got rid of him- cheers big sam)…Torres didnt score; but could have had 6!!! It is no co-incidence that Liverpool have won more games with him in their side this year! Without him they have drawn alot of games!!! If he is injured we stand a better chance off getting a result…

On players in….Zaki is not even half the player Owen is. I’d rather take heskey to play with Owen and Martins. What a strike force that would be…Heskey working his socks off so michael and Owen could get the goals…

I don’t reckon Michael will sign. Why would he? Signing a contract means Newcastle can get money for him, no contract means he’s free to choose (among those interested) where he goes. The money his new club doesn’t have to pay NUFC can be divided between the club and Michael.

I don’t see why he would sign. Hope I’m wrong, though, as we’re not a threat without him.
