As we said yesterday, this is the week the Newcastle Board have selected to try to get the players signed up whose contracts run out at the end of the season.
Nicky Butt – expected to sign one year extension this week
We have 7 players whose contracts run out and it looks like four will be offered their new contracts this week, Michael Owen, Nicky Butt, Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi.
And Joe seem pretty sure that the last three are all set to sign along the dotted line, and we expect that to happen within the next few days.
It hasn’t been easy for the Newcastle players this season, as manager Kevin Keegan left after just two league games, and we proceeded to plummet in the league after that.
We lost five games in succession after Kevin walked out, and the former manager is now suing the club for £8M, for wrongful dismissal, although the rumors were that he resigned.
But all this upheaval hasn’t stopped players like Nicky Butt from still wanting to stay on Tyneside, and of course local lads Shola ASmeobi and Steve Harper don’t want to leave the club, ever.
Nicky seems to think this is the way Newcastle are, and he’s accepted that, probably because he’s also well aware of the legendary support the teams receives from its fans. We’ve won nothing for 40 years but we are one of the most reported on teams in England – not sure if that is good or bad.
But it says something about the Newcastle club, that players are still willing to commit, given all the uncertainty that surrounds the club right now.
And then of course there’s Michael Owen, and the captain plays things so close to his chest, it’s hard to know what he’s thinking.
In our poll, 55% think Michael will sign the new contract but 30% think not. But we’ve only had 336 votes, so please vote if you haven’t already done so – it’s whether or not you think he will sign the new contract at Newcastle, and it’s on our home page, down the right-hand side in our Poll Corner.
Of course what we’d all like to see is to have all four players sign before the end of the week, and then we could really have a good time against Spurs on Sunday, with that extra stability, and maybe take then to the cleaners?
Whoops, getting carried away again. 😀
