Leighton Baines Is Likely Kinnear Target

Joe Kinnear wants to bring in another left back to give some competition to improving Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique, who probably had his best game for Newcastle this season at Portsmouth on Sunday.

Leighton Baines – would be excellent acquisition for Newcastle

Jose made Oba’s goal in the 78th minute and in the first half stormed through and hit a great shot to David James’ top right hand corner, that the England goalkeeper did well to turn around the post for a corner.

Joe has said he’s already put in a bid for a left back in England, and we think that’s for Everton’s Leighton Baines, who was a target for Newcastle 18 months ago, when Big Sam first came to the club, and Baines was still at Wigan.

And there was some interesting news on Sunday that Everton boss Dave Moyes is indeed ready to listen to offers for left full-back Leighton Baines.

The News of the World on Sunday said that Moyes wants to cash in on Leighton Baines to raise funds for a new striker, that Everton so desperately need with Ayegbeni Yakubu out for the season. The NOTW isn’t always the most reliable in their reporting, but it’s at least consistent with reports last week that Newcastle were interested in Baines.

Reports are that Newcastle United have already made inquiries for the former Wigan Athletic defender, and we think Joe has already made a bid, probably for £3M, as an initial gambit. Everton paid £5M to Wigan for the defender 18 months ago.

We think Baines would be great at Newcastle, and will only get better under the tutelage of Joe Kinnear, who himself was a top class right-back for Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland, and has already vastly improved the Newcastle defense in his time on Tyneside.

Baines, who is 24 years old and stands 5’8″, has played 16 times for the England Under-21 side, but has lost his way a little at Everton, and may well appreciate a move to Tyneside.

We hope so.

Leighton Baines would be a good buy. We desperately need cover for left back.

I keep hearing that Aidan McGeady has had a bust up with Strachan and is interested in speaking to the toon. Has anyone else heard this rumour?

what a terrible rumour no chance, kinnear is just talking blindly when he mentions signing players, he will only sign very cheap players or fee based loan deals, baines will never ever leave everton.

I notice Kinnear has commented on being rebuffed by Riise, and more or less saying if he could have got Risse then he would have got shut of Enrique!
That must be magical for the young Spaniards confidence knowing his manager is looking at off loading him just as he is getting a decnt run in the side – with a couple of good performances to boot.
Look, I know there are folks on here who havent the time of day for Enrique but looking at the facts, he hasnt really had a run in the side through injuries and also N’Zogbia playing there early on, he’s a young Spanish lad who will need a bit of time to get settled, a bit of time and a decent run in the side – which is what he is getting now – and he looks quite promising given a chance.
Kadar, from what I have seen is decent enough cover and I feel had we been in a better position league wise then maybe Kinnear would have looked at getting in players in other positions.
My own humble opinion would be to keep the meagre transfer funds for other areas and maybe get a Left back in on loan, not only to provide competition but also cover for Enrique untill the end of the season – Baines would probably be a good choice.

Jonas – Bale not Baines. I’m a fan of Baines and it’d be awesome if we could get our mitts on him

We seriously need a backup. He wasn’t as strong as everyone is making out in the second half, although admitedly did improve. If he continues making progress like that we need a backup LB, otherwise we need a first teamer.

Kadar wouldnt be given a chance, Zog would constantly be moved to LB played out of position and get peed off and leave.

CM is highest priority atm, then LB and potentially a striker depending on progress over the next few weeks.

Baines is a cracking little full back who is being kept out of the evrton side by one of the best defenders in england right now in Lescott!

Enrique is improving; i’m still not fully confident when he’s in the side as he gives the ball away far to much for my liking but as i said on a previous post he had a very good game on sunday.

We certainly require another left back becuase if jose gets injured then were back to square pegs in round holes! Get Baines in and let the two off them battle it out for the right to earn their first team black and white shirt!

I’ve always been one of Enrique’s biggest fans but I’d have Baines in ahead of him at the moment. I’d want Enrique to stay though and I hope those “quotes” are wide of the mark regards Kinnear’s motives on getting Riise. I’m sure the young Spaniard would be chuffed to know JK could “do something with Enrique” if he got a like-for-like replacement.

Tozer and kadar cud probably fill in for Enrique. Also if needs be we have bassong and nzogbia who cud play there.New centre mid and right back are needed more as we only have geremi for cover and i dont think edgar will ever be gud enuf.

Nightfall I was about to say the same , that could be a good deal for both of us. Although if Joe does want another LB I would love us to go for Wendell, he is the biz. I am not convinced we need one however as apart from Kadar, Duff is well able to to do job imo.

Wendel is a lovely player but a winger! He is like Bastos but a fair bit better.

He can play LB sure but is 10x on the left wing.

Hang on a minute – people are reading that quote from JFK and jumping to some pretty big conclusions. He’s never mentioned getting rid of Enrique, so who’s to say it’s even a 1st team player that he offered to lose?

Also, he’s always spoken about competition for Enrique, not a replacement.

Personally I liked the look of Enrique on Sunday and we know he’s got the quality if he can only learn to show it in our type of game.

Back on thread though: would love to get Baines, but it’s just as likely to happen as the 150-odd rumours from the last transfer window. It’ll be loans only for us, I reckon – and fair enough, really.

If we believe all that is printed it looks like Joe has decided that we need cover at left back or does he mean we need another left back.
Well, what about right back, midfield and cover for Jonas. I’m fed up with the continuing undermining of Jose Enrique and I would hate to see him go. The present back four have done incredibly well against even the stiffest opposition but Joe appears to want to “tinker” His inclusion of Taylor against Stoke, whether or not to appease the players frustration at being left out, was a tactical error and cost us 3 points.
Instead of scouring the country and abroad for a left back give Jose more games because he and Bassong have improved more than other players at Newcastle this season.

Hadn’t seen that bit of the quote – must have read a different edit. But it still seems a daft thing to say, so I’m wondering if he meant he could have used the competition for the place to bring Enrique on, rather than shipping him out?

Or am I just insanely optimistic?

Well it’s a quote and to be honest, it sounds exactly like something he’d say and how he’d say it but if he’s been misquoted then fine. Either way, I hope we keep Jose.

We don’t desperately need a LB. Leighton Baines is a good player, but we shouldn’t spend over 2 mil for him. Enrique is doing fine.

Bale is a jinx. Suits our club perfectly. Everton will probably hope to recover all the money they paid for Baines. 3m isn’t enough, but definitely more than enough to sign another Bassong. I hope Wise has more than a few names for left back.

I like the Smith-Baines proposal, however doubt Everton would take Smith untill he is fully fit plus I have a feeling Kinnear will want to try where Allardyce failed – get smith showing the Toon what he is capable of on a football pitch!

Yep; Smith for Baines straight swap.

Saving any cash MA will give JFK to buy minimum two central midfield players; i.e. defensive midfield and some one with a little flair would be awesome…..

Smith and Baines. Both bought for 5 mill, both now worth 3 mill. If we can get Smith near fit for January we should make the offer. Or they can have Carroll on Loan and give us Baines for 2.5.
