Joe Kinnear wants to bring in another left back to give some competition to improving Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique, who probably had his best game for Newcastle this season at Portsmouth on Sunday.
Leighton Baines – would be excellent acquisition for Newcastle
Jose made Oba’s goal in the 78th minute and in the first half stormed through and hit a great shot to David James’ top right hand corner, that the England goalkeeper did well to turn around the post for a corner.
Joe has said he’s already put in a bid for a left back in England, and we think that’s for Everton’s Leighton Baines, who was a target for Newcastle 18 months ago, when Big Sam first came to the club, and Baines was still at Wigan.
And there was some interesting news on Sunday that Everton boss Dave Moyes is indeed ready to listen to offers for left full-back Leighton Baines.
The News of the World on Sunday said that Moyes wants to cash in on Leighton Baines to raise funds for a new striker, that Everton so desperately need with Ayegbeni Yakubu out for the season. The NOTW isn’t always the most reliable in their reporting, but it’s at least consistent with reports last week that Newcastle were interested in Baines.
Reports are that Newcastle United have already made inquiries for the former Wigan Athletic defender, and we think Joe has already made a bid, probably for £3M, as an initial gambit. Everton paid £5M to Wigan for the defender 18 months ago.
We think Baines would be great at Newcastle, and will only get better under the tutelage of Joe Kinnear, who himself was a top class right-back for Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland, and has already vastly improved the Newcastle defense in his time on Tyneside.
Baines, who is 24 years old and stands 5’8″, has played 16 times for the England Under-21 side, but has lost his way a little at Everton, and may well appreciate a move to Tyneside.
We hope so.
