Nicky Butt is one of four players that Newcastle United will offer new contracts to this week.
Nicky Butt – his experience will be invaluable for Newcastle
And from the comments he has made today, it’s very likely Nicky Butt will sign along that dotted line, and sooner rather than later.
Nicky told Sky Sports News today:
“My feeling is that I want to stay at the club and end my career here.”“And if we can sort it out the sooner the better really.”
“Once it’s all sorted and it’s OK and the contract is good for the club and for me, then I’ll want to sign it.
Nicky comes in for his fair amount of criticism, but his performances for the team these last two seasons have generally been excellent, and some fans forget just how much experience Nicky has. He’s a players player.
He had a solid game on Sunday, and played well with young Danny Guthrie, and we have to also realize he can help bring on youngsters like Danny at the club.
Nicky has also become a leader among the players, and if we need a player who can take the pressure, that’s Nicky, and we’ll be delighted if he signs an extension to his contract.
It’s no coincidence either that Kinnear, Keegan, Allardyce and Roeder all sang Nicky’s praises, while they were managing the club, and that Wigan manager Steve Bruce would love to sign him on a two year deal in the summer.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Steve Bruce deserves the job in summer, well i think he’s the best man for the job, unless Kinnear gets us into europe or something.
That way evryones happy including Bruce as he finally gets his Nicky Butt.

Comment #3this may suggest he wants more than a one-year contrat extension?? id only give him a one year extension personally!

Comment #4Steve Bruce, how about errrr NO!
Anyway, on to Butt, ive personally been a big critic of his, his slow, sideways mentality and constant misplaced passes have grinded on me so much this season, but still, like sunday, he can show that he still has the quality to perform and i think another years contract would be ample thanks for the excellent performances in past seasons. However, im saying this in view of us buying a young, powerful box to box midfielder to replace and learn off him in Jan or the summer, as if we dont, and Butt plays most games next season, well…..it could be disasterous is all im going to say!!!

Comment #5When you say generally excellent what you mean is good at tackling but absolutely terrible at passing?
Seriously, I love my team but keeping people like Butt on is doing us no favours unless he’s being kept on a mentor or something. He doesn’t have the intensity to keep going at premiership level anymore.

Comment #7After this season i can only see him having a bit-part to play. I still would like to see him hang around for a few more years as he is an experienced professional and would be good to have around the dressing room.

Comment #8The guy has NO PACE! Pace is essential to a team’s success these days. It is an attribute that every midfielder nowadays HAVE TO posses. Butt’s passing is getting worse with every match also. He has the vision but lacks the touch. I would give him one year just for his effort and in the mean time try and replace him with fresh blood in January or the summer-he’s a great squad player though, just like Geremi and Smith.

Comment #10Ed…. I don’t think toon supporters forget about his footballing experience, I think it’s Butt that forgets about his footballing experience when he gives fouls away around the box in the last 5 miuntes.

Comment #11I am glad were all looking up rather than down
i have always supported Ashleys transfer policy- not his communications of course-
but i like many have been saying KK left a good team 0 with the way the season has panned out we could have been in the top 5 if kk was there and there was no caos for 2 months
but we must not live in the past (and evryone by now should know that KK is part of our past and some of our good times at that- however i would be too anxious if he came back- constantly worrying about KK state of mind would affect me i think
I say this only because of the poll on this site about having KK back- I HATE IT WHEN IAM IN THE MINORITY AMONG PEOPLE
TOON ARMY
i am not backing JK for perm but i havent made up my decison- he looks to have the respect of the players even owen (i dont think JK bullshits) although he swears alot
he has been given a once in a lifetime chance at a big how can we begrudge if this season we end up with respect AND RESPECT TO ME MEANS EUROPE OR A CUP!!!!!

Comment #14There really has been some rubbish written about Butt here. He is still a very good holding midfielder, and he was one of our best players last Sunday. To people who actually know about the game, he is still a very valuable asset to Newcastle.
ps Boater, if you observed very closely, you would have noticed that many of the times Butt has given fouls away in the box, he has been trying to cover for an out of position Taylor, who seems to think that he is still a striker.

It’s technically part of Scandinavia – it’s part of the same greater peninsula as well as having a similar culture (hence the similar flags to the rest of Scandinavia)
Nerdy rant over
Butt’s be good for another year or so, maybe as a player/coach so he can impart some of his experience before his legs give out for good.

Comment #19As a backup solution/squad player in midfield for extra grit in tight matches he could probably be useful for us beyond this season.
However, there should be absolutely no doubt we need a permanent replacement this summer. Butt is 34, far beyond his best years. He’s got horrid distribution, no pace and will most likely only get worse. Not to mention the fact that he usually makes one solid attempt pr game to give away a penalty as mentioned above

Comment #29Have we got any Finnish posters on here because I have recently been mpressed with this midfielder Roman Eremenko of Dynamo Kiev, on loan from Udinese and it seems he can play any position in midfield and from what I have seen has a fair bit of quality too.

Anyway Roman Eremenko is a great player and he’s the one who can replace Jari Litmanen in our international team. I would definite love to see Eremenko playing for Newcaste. Nice that you notice him.

Comment #35First of all I’m disgusted that my previous posts on this subject have been deleted.
Anyone that would be happy for Butt to stay and then cries when we’re relegated is a fool.
What has he actually done since he’s been here?
If he is here next season then it reinforces the point that we are just a bad smell. Too bad too launch an actual threat, but only just good enough to avoid relegation.
Such a shame.

Could have sworn I heard that somewhere.
Ile – What do you think of his older brother?
Ile (from Finland)
Dec 16, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Comment #37He’s older brother Alexei has skills and is sometimes very good player. But what comes to his life outside of football field is a mess. I remember he’s been fined couple of times because of drunk driving and fighting.
If I could recommend someone from Finland, I would say Lauri Dalla Valle who is VERY promising 17 year old forward, but unfortunately he has contract with Liverpool

Most sources yesterday were claiming 80k with clauses.
I think he’d accept 90k, sounds about the right wage.
