Joe Kinnear has said today that Mark Viduka is yet to be offered a new contract at Newcastle United, and we don’t think he will be offered one.
Mark Viduka – out of contract in June
Mark Viduka signed from Middlesbrough as a free agent for two years, in the summer of 2007, with the option for a third season, but we don’t expect Newcastle to pick up that option.
Joe Kinnear will now likely see how Mark does through the end of the season, before recommending whether Newcastle should take up the 3rd year option on Mark’s contract.
Joe told the Shields Gazette today:
“I’ve been going slowly, slowly with Mark to be honest.”
“Looking at him when I first came in, the word round the club was that he would retire at the end of the season and go back to Australia.”
“He’s getting fitter and fitter, but I have to say that one is in the balance.”
We feel sure that Mark will find it hard to get a contract extension at Newcastle and of the seven players whose contracts run out in the summer, David Edgar, Claudio Capapa and Viduka will in all likelihood be allowed to move on. The other four – Owen, Butt, Ameopbi and Harper have all been offered new contracts.
The loss of the 3 players will enable Joe to bring in some additional new players in the summer, and one will almost definitely be another center back – maybe even Matthew Upson.
Viduka is on huge wages at the club and with his terrible injury record, his wages have hardly been a good deal for the club.
What do you think?
