Jonas Gutierrez has added his voice to the many who want Michael Owen to sign a new contract at Newcastle United, and we think it’s likely Michael will do that before our game against Spurs on Sunday.
Jonas Gutierrez – wants Michael Owen to stay on Tyneside
The Argentine, whom Newcastle signed from Real Mallorca in the summer for peanuts, told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle:
“I want him to stay so much and I want to work with him more.” “It’s one of the reasons I came to Newcastle United to play with players like him.”
“I knew that Newcastle must be a big club to have a player like Owen.” “It was a great opportunity to come here and I want to be my best for the team, hopefully with Michael here.”
“That is how everybody feels. We all want him to sign a new contract as he is a special captain.”
Owen of course has been in good goal-scoring form this season with 9 goals in just 15 appearances, as he’s been out injured a bit this season. He scored the all important goal on Sunday at Portsmouth, after Jonas laid on a beautiful through ball for his captain.
Once that goal went in, Newcastle were stalwart in defense, unlike the week before against Stoke City.
Jonas thinks Michael is an excellent player and one of the best players in the world, as he continued:
“Michael always plays well and works very hard for the team.” “He is a very good striker and one of the best players in the world.”
“He is certainly one of the best players I have worked with in my career.” “What I like about him is that he not only gets goals every time he plays but also gets back and helps in midfield. Sometimes people don’t see this.”
“But he does it and it works for Newcastle.” “For me, playing in this team with both Michael and Oba, I enjoy it very much.”
“All we have to do as wingers is get the ball and get it to them. If we do that regularly enough, they will score.”“Now we must do that again and beat Tottenham.”
We wonder if Fabio Capello is reading what Jonas said above, because some feel that Owen doesn’t work hard enough on the field, and that’s one of the reasons he hasn’t been a consistent starter for England under Capello.
If we can beat Spurs on Sunday, it will cap off one of the best weeks this season for the Newcastle United Football club. Here’s hoping.
