Joe Kinnear has only one worry for Sunday, and that’s he fitness of Obafemi Martins, who came off at Fratton Park with groin trouble after scoring the vital second goal.
Oba Martins – has small chance to start on Sunday
Rather surprisingly, Newcastle have won their last five League meetings with Spurs, scoring at least three goals on each of those occasions, and Martins has scored in each of the last four victories, so that’s every reason to hope that Oba will be fit for Sunday’s game.
Kinnear will not want to risk Oba with two more games coming quick and fast over the Xmas holiday period.
The Newcastle manager said today:
“We are monitoring the situation with Oba. but it is touch and go, to be honest. We are going to leave it as late as possible.” “He will have a fitness test tomorrow morning, but it’s not looking too good at the moment.”
“He got injured just before he scored, and that was why he didn’t do his normal somersaults.” “He would be a big loss to us because we certainly need his pace. He has caused numerous problems to all the opposition we have played.”
“But it is just wait and see, really.”
If there’s any doubt at all we should let Oba rest, and it looks like Shola Ameobi could get the nod, and it’s a good time – at St. James’ Park – for Shola to get his 50th goal for the club.
We’ll know all the answers by 5:00 pm local time on Sunday afternoon – let’s hope we’ve got another 3 points. Yes!
