Shay Given Not Used To Good Defense In Front Of Him

Shay Given is witnessing Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton put together an excellent defense in front of the Irishman, and this must be coming as some kind of shock to the brilliant goalkeeper, who has never been so well protected in his time on Tyneside.

Shay Given – this is all so puzzling to Shay

Shay talked about the new look defense today and was even able to talk about clean sheets:

“I can’t remember the last time we kept three clean sheets in three away games,” “It certainly hasn’t happened very often in my time at the club, but it’s a good record to have.”

“It’s a credit to the team. We’re working really hard when we lose the ball, and we’re keeping a really good defensive shape.”

“The defenders will get a lot of the plaudits, and rightly so, but the boys in midfield are giving them a really good hand and even the front two are helping to defend as well.”

“It’s a whole team effort and it’s fantastic. The more clean sheets you keep, the better chance you have of winning games.”

“If you can have a settled team and a settled back four, it does help everyone. You know each other better and you can build up an understanding.”

“I don’t think it’s any coincidence that for the last three clean sheets we’ve kept, we’ve had the same back four.”

Well Shay certainly seems pleased about the whole thing.

But this also has to be a little frightening for Shay, one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier league, that there are signs that Newcastle really are putting a good defense together in front of him, for the first time in his 11 years at the club.

They all looked terrific against Portsmouth, and Shay is right when he says the lads are all working for each other – it’s called team work, and it’s something that Joe has been very successful at, in his short 3 months at the club.

We cannot get too carried away, and our bubble may burst on Sunday, because things are just looking a little too good right now.

And of course what we usually do as a club, when the expectations rise like they have done this week, and things look to be going well, is that we put in a real bad performance, just to bring the fans thumping back to reality.

But if we play well and get all 3 points tomorrow, we may even have to start taking our side seriously, because we may be even better than we thought.

Wouldn’t that be something!

its early days for this defence. It looks promising but I think the key thing is to keep the four playing together. Tayls can wait and watch- he might learn something which would be a welcome development.

As much as I rate Upson (we shouldv signed him years ago) I would like to see a back up lb come in and the remainder of whatever funds we have in jan spent on purely the midfield. We need numbers in the cm position. An imposing midfielder with a good engine is the key signing. get it right jk and we may be on the right path.

The DEFENCE (s is so American) has been holding strong and I imagine that is massive for wee Shay even if it’s been for only 3 games where we’ve gotten lucky a few times. But he’s getting a lot more protection then he used to which is very important for us and him obviously, he used to get fierce exposed before which usually led to a goal, him pulling off a top class save, the other guy fires wide, or worst of all injury, one of the clearest times I remmeber the wee lad being left really expose and unprotected he ended up with what could have been life threatening injury. So I think this, is better then anything he expected, seeing as he’s used to comidies that are Bramble and co in front of him. The amount of times he’d be having an amazing game, keeping the other team out and his work would be undone by stupidity on our defenders side. A joke.

He deserves a strong defence in front of him. He’s had to put up with enough crap over the yeras from defenders not doing their jobs. There’s a long way to go and our defence needs to find consistancy which it’s not known for. But it’s deffinitly and improvement.

I think the worse thing we can do is get into that mindset that we are invicible at the back.

Dont forget that Shay did have to make some amazing saves on Sunday gone and proved himself yet again as the best stopper in the PL.

Roll on Tomorrow. Shame we aint being televised. Will have to make do with crappy highlights.

Mrs made it impossible for me to go tomorrow – but im there in spirit.

really the defense has improved a lot under this management, just we need is more creative mid fielders and we’ll be a high flying team .joe’s have to spend money wisely on mid fielders for sure.we are definiely moving on the right direction.

    Spot on Ed.

It would be just typical of us to play terrible and get beat tomorow.

You never know though. I’ll go for 2-1 to us. Jonas and Shola to score. Although I have a sneaky suspicion Butt might get one. Don’t know why because he doesn’t look like scoring but he’s due one.

    Howay the lads.

I’m not getting carried away. I’ve been kicked in the gonads with steel toecapped martins enough times by our club for that.
I just hope nowadays. Nothing but hope.
