Our 21 year old up and coming midfielder Danny Guthrie has talked today about his football heroes when he was growing up, and he hopes to emulate them, and maybe that could come sooner than he ever though possible.
Danny Guthrie – made excellent start to Newcastle career
Danny Guthrie said today:
“When I was growing up, the top midfielders were the Keanes and the (Patrick) Vieiras, and the Gerrards and the (Frank) Lampards were coming through.”
“They are the top players, and I still look up to players like that.” “The aim is to be up there being mentioned in the same breath as them.”
“When I was growing up, he (Gerrard) was in the position I am in now – and he has turned out to be one of the best midfielders in the world.”
“You can look at that and think ‘maybe in six, seven years, you could be up there as well’.”
Danny came to Newcastle in the summer on a £2M move from Liverpool, and it appears he was the only player that then manager Kevin Keegan was instrumental in bringing to the club over the summer.
And with the suspension and then injury to Joey Barton, Danny has had an extended run in the first team and has formed a more than decent partnership with Nicky Butt, although Joe Kinnear will be strengthening that area of the team in the January transfer window.
“It’s good to play with someone like Nicky. He’s been there and done it.”
“I am still only 21, so I can keep learning from him. I am really enjoying playing with him. It’s a good partnership we are building.”
“When I was at Manchester United, you always watched the first-team games – and he was the one playing alongside Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and top players like that.”
“I wouldn’t have thought I would be playing alongside him a few years on.”
Nicky Butt and Danny will be important players for Newcastle this afternoon, as we try to get two wins on the trot for the first time in the league this season, and only our third win at home under Joe Kinnear, since he arrived in late September.
Guthrie continued and talked about the tough game today:
“It’s a big game; it’s at home, and we are coming in off a 3-0 win – so we are really confident.”“But Spurs are playing well as well.”
“They are a good side and they have had a new manager take over recently, so they have got their boost as well.”
“We are too good to be fighting a relegation battle, and the way the table is at the moment you can climb very quickly.”
“If we can get out of this Christmas period with a few wins, that would set us up nicely.”
It’s very important that Newcastle put in a good display today, and hopefully get the win, as there are signs that Newcastle fans think we may have more than a decent squad when February rolls around, and Joe has done his squad strengthening.
In any case January is shaping up to be an exciting month for Newcastle fans everywhere.
