Joe Kinnear has talked to the Mirror today and has we think tested the water by saying he thinks Mike Ashley will stay as the owner of Newcastle United, beyond this season.
Joe Kinnear – Mike wants to start rebuilding the club
Kinnear told the Sunday Mirror today:
“He wants to get back on the scene and rebuild the club. I get the sense he’s planning to be here a bit longer.”
“His passion for the club has been reinvigorated.”
Joe has revealed that his fairly successful partnership with owner Mike Ashley at Newcastle is likely to continue into next season, with the global economic crisis making the sale of the club increasingly unlikely.
There seems to be little chance of the economic crisis being over any time soon, and Mike will hardly sell the club at a big loss, that’s for sure.
But we think over the last few weeks Mike may have been reassessing his position at the Tyneside club, and with the upbeat in form of the team, and the bringing together of the club as much as he can, by manager Joe Kinnear, we think Mike would like to remain owner, as witnessed by his willingness to fund Kinnear next month to the tune of at least £12M.
There still remains potential problems with those fans who are still absolutely furious that Kevin Keegan was allowed to leave the club in early September, and certainly the club has hardly been run well since Chris Mort left.
It would be terrific if we could get Mike back as Chairman, but he’s a top class lawyer, and it seems that’s where he sees his career, although he looked more than a good Chairman while he was at the club, and concentrated on the Newcastle community, which was great to see.
Kinnear added:
“He would stay on as owner and I would stay on as manager. I have been told my job is safe as long as he is here.”
“Mike has already mentioned the possibility of staying on if the club is not sold. He said, ‘You will always be with me as long as I’m here’.
“We’ve spoken about the future and he will sell it if someone comes in with the right offer.”
“He said, ‘It looks like I’m not going to be able to sell it, so we have to start talking about next year’.”
“He’s coming to terms with the idea that he ain’t going to be able to sell the club for the money he wants. ”
Kinnear has said that Ashley will get more involved with the club, but only after the Keegan Premier League tribunal into Kevin’s September departure, but still no date has been set for that hearing.
The sooner that gets settled the better it is for our club, whichever way it goes.
Kinnear added:
“I think you’ll see a different Mike when that’s all been put to bed. I know it’s hurting him, the position he is in, and I know he definitely wants to come back.”
“I think once the fans see he’s prepared to invest back in the club, once they see we’re improving, the team’s getting better, a few more players added, it’s all pluses on his side.”
It seems to us that Kinnear has turned out a blessing for Mike, and the owner is not keeping it a secret that he thinks the world of Joe.
Joe has definitely put the pride back on Tyneside.
Kinnear has been the glue since September, that has kept our club together, and as we said earlier this morning, we should not forget that, whatever eventually happens to Mike and Joe.
But it does seem that their tenures at Newcastle are now inexorably linked together.
Let us know what you think about this situation.
We are very aware there are still some raw emotions out there associated with Mike Ashley, so please try to keep the comments clean, but still let us know your views on this – many thanks lads and lasses.

Comment #41If you really need blood, Lacedaemonian, I think Llambias would be my choice.
To be honest, we still don’t know all the details of KK leaving and we don’t know if it really was a bust up with Wise or Llambias…my personal opinion is, that Wise didn’t do a bad job in the end (think about the deals we wrapped up in the cheap for Jonas, Bassong, Guthrie). Difficult…I’m no near to be a Wise fan, but we have to look at what he did for the club and that’s (really hard to say, but true) not bad.

We both seem to have similar view on what we would like to see at NUFC i just hope it goes that way and a win against the Spuds today will be a step in the right direction although this is a tough game as MR REDKNAPP has them playing quite well.

I’m interested in what you expect from NUFC today maybe a prediction and who the star man may be. Also what about the Owen situation, do you think he will sign on the dotted line or leave us for pastures new?

Comment #49“Mike back as Chairman”- I think you mean Mort on that one Ed 😛 I agree since Mort left there has been no communication at all from the board. He was very professional and sensible in his comments through out and has been a great loss to the club. Hopefully we can get him back or another chairman similar to him. What we should do is replace the pathetic so called chairman we have now LLAMBIARSE!!

Comment #52I really do bets not very often. My two last bets where right (the last one was the 0:3 against pompey). Anyway, my feeling is that we have it to get the home win we all waiting for so desperately! I fear lennon, who seems to be in excellent shape recently! My prediction still is a good result for us…maybe it’s 4:1…but I’d be happy with a 2:1 also, as long as we win.
Newspapers still expect Owen to leave. I doubt that, where should he go? If he stays he’s the hero, the captain, the one we love! I think Owen needs that sort of attention and he also is settled down here (personally I think he waits to work for his mate Shearer somewhere in the future…). If he goes to a top 4 team he will “just” be a squad player and that certainly wont help him to get into the england team again. For all of these reasons I think he stays. I fear only two things:
a) Villa does make a bid for him to lure him away.
b) Everton (the team he supported during his youth) make a bid – althought I don’t think they have the money to pay his wages…and I think it won’t be good for him to do it, becouse of his liverpool past.
No, realistically I really think he will stay and he will be the hero today, togehter with Shola scoring his 50th goal for us and maybe we see Duke on the scoring board too? Would be nice! So all in all I have optimistic feelings really.

I have a good feeling for today. The players will want revenge after they turned us over in the cup a few months ago at SJP so that might spur the players on to get one over them. I also think the defence is solid of late and Bassong is a quality find and he will do himself no harm by putting in another good game today which will show he is also a consistent player which we sadly lack at NUFC atm.

Comment #62Some people try to use strong words to be heard. I must admit that sometimes I also use those kind of words, but I much rather try to keep em away…so don’t let your mood be affectec by those people…basically no one listenes to them, so they try to use this language to get attention. You’re better than them if you do not get onto that level!

Comment #63I’d be far more impressed if FatAsh had any choice but to stick around. As he can’t sell, he has no other choice and if he doesn’t want to lose another 100million to relegation, he will put his hand in his pocket in January. No-one expects a plaster saint, but there’s plenty the owner could have done/could do to improve matters.
But people in charge have to mean what they say. That is critical as nothing can be achieved without trust. KK walked because he couldn’t be in a partnership where one side tells the truth and the other doesn’t. Now Ashley is over a barrel, he is finally being square. But he could do far more. Keegan’s acrimonious departure and a screwed-up season is the price we’ve had to pay to get some honesty. I’m ready to move on, but not forget. And I’m amazed at how many are blind about this. I suspect most were just glad to see the back of KK anyway. Fair enough. But don’t lets fall into some Ashley love-fest. Until he proves otherwise, he is no friend to Newcastle United.

Comment #65Sav, you’re right to not forget. If you do so, that means you think about the past and you learn something out of it.
As far as I heard interviews with JFK I must admit until now he always was honest. That’s what it needs and I slowly starting to trust him. So I’m also affected by the past as you can see!

Comment #66beyethegreat, you’re right, that’s quite interesting. But is he a wide player or a central midfielder (we need one desperately).
I would also welcome the players we’ve been linked so far (sissoko, baines, etc.)

Comment #67Toon1978, personally I wouldn’t bother to reply.
I have been watching us for over 50 years and really would like some stability and committment from the Management. If MA can give it then I for one would be happy.
What really upset me yesterday was watching the Beeb preview and them talking about ManU and Liverpool titles. With half decent backing from the board we should have had some of them. If MA can do then he will be a hero in my eyes. A clean sheet today and any goals will satisfy me.

Comment #70I’ve been disappointed by Ashley
I’ve been disappointed by Keegan
I’ve been disappointed by Wise
I’ve been disappointed by Llambias
I’m sick of being disappointed !
I’m sicking of looking to the past!
I’m ready to move forward and if thats with Ashley, as long as he will back us, then thats fine by me.
I would be quite happy for him to come back to SJP. He respected our wishes and stayed away. Well enough water has passed for me for him to come back.
We can all list his mistakes, but i hope we can look back and call them ‘lessons learnt’.
Hes still got a long way to go and although i am willing to forgive, i wont forget!

1-if Ashley stays, perhaps sell some of his stake to get a bit more income
2-no more talk of Keegan he’s gone
3-none of this silly swearing/name calling and arguing i love reading this site for ppl’s insights and opinions rather than “i know best” or “your a cockney” or “i invented Newcastle i love them more” and so on.
4-Kinnear needs to stay a while just to balance it and keep us up, and then ask him or Bobby who a long term successor would be.
5-beat spurs 7-1
