It’s Sunday again and it’s 10 days to the opening of the January transfer window so we would expect Newcastle United to be linked with some new players today, and we’re not disappointed.
Mamadouu Sakho – 18 year old star defender with strange haircut
The People says that Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear is after Paris St Germain’s brilliant young defender Mamadou Sakho – and hopes to pull off a transfer-window next month for the youngster.
Sakho, just 18, has already captained PSG and has played for them 20 times already and has also represented the France Under-17 and France Under-18 sides.
The 6’2” youngster can play at either left back or center-back and they are probably heartened by how well 22 year old Sebastien Bassong has been a bargain buy for the Newcastle side.
We were first linked with this player last April , when Kevin Keegan talked about him, so he is a long term target of the club, and now may be the time to move for him. He turns 19 in February.
The news today is that the youngster was watched again by Newcastle scouts against Twente Enschede last week – but it was interesting that other Premier League clubs were well represented at that game.
PSG want around £6M for their star youngster, and that sounds a lot, but not if he becomes a top class player in the next couple of years and Mamadou fits into Newcastle’s strategy under Mike Ashley of buying players young, who have still to develop fully as footballers.
Sakho has been at Paris Saint-Germain since he was 11 years old and he was initially a striker, but was moved to defense and he usually plays at left back or even as a left wing back, and is also useful in the middle of defense because of his height.
He made his first-team and Ligue 1 debut on October 20, 2007 against Valenciennes FC and surprisingly he also captained the squad, and became the youngest ever captain of Paris Saint Germain and also the youngest player ever to captain a side in the French Ligue 1, at 17 years and 8 months.
We haven’t seen this lad play, but he looks like he could become a top class player, and since Joe has to look at players at around £5M each, he could be a very good buy indeed, as it looks like he’s pure class from his CV.
