There is news today that Newcastle may again be in for 32 year-old Real Betis defender Juanito, whose contract runs out in June.
Juanito – very experienced Spanish defender
It’s not the first time we have been linked with this central defe3nder who has played 25 times for the Spanish national side, and 224 times for Real Betis, where he is currently the club captain.
We’re not sure why Kinnear would be interested in the player, unless he sees him as a left back to challenge Jose Enrique for a couple of years, but certainly his experience and heading ability would add something to our defense, and he’d be a superb utility defender for the side.
It seems that Juanito is still disillusioned with the La Liga side, after they refused to meet his demands on a new contract and his discontent has reportedly alerted Newcastle manager Kinnear, who is said to be keen to add some experience to his back line.
But Kinnear is likely to face a fight for Juanita, if indeed he is a Newcastle target, because he is also attracting attention from Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
Joe has said he wants to strengthen the Newcastle squad in general in January, so it may be that Juanito could be good value for the club, and he could play for another two to three seasons, and is certainly a very hard tackling player with lots of experience.
For left back we think that Everton’s Leighton Baines may be Joe’s first choice, but in last night’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, Everton center back Yobo was injured with a hamstring pull, and Joleon Lescott moved over to center-back with Leighton coming in at left-back.
If Yobo is out for a while, that may well put a spanner in the works of getting Baines to Newcastle in January.
With Big Sam now at Blackburn Rovers there would appear to be no chance of getting former Liverpool left-back Stephen Warnock, who was also one of our targets last summer.
Just 8 days to go until the transfer window opens, and we hope we can get a few players in very early next year.
