The agent of Fiorentina defender Manuel da Costa admits that a move to the Premiership may be on for the youngster, and his agent says they are already speaking to Premier clubs in the middle of the league table – Newcastle are 12th top of 20 teams right now.
Manuel da Costa – 22 year old Portuguese defender
Joe Kinnear has said today the club have already spoken to 4 players and put in bids for them.
Franck Peslerbe, who is Manuel da Costa’s agent told Setanta Sports:
“Moving to The Premier League is an option for him, and he would be very happy with such a destination.”
“We are hopeful this will happen during the transfer window. We are in talks with clubs that are currently in the middle of the English table.”
“So moving to The Premier League is an option to Manuel da Costa.”
Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Manchester City are all reported to be after a new left-back for the January market, and maybe Manuel is one we have already put in a bid for. Apparently only one club so far have bid for his services.
Manuel da Costa currently plays in central defense for AC Fiorentina, and he was born in Saint-Max, France, but qualifies to play for Portugal through his parents. He has a Portuguese father and a Moroccan mother, and he has represented the Portugal Under-21 side 22 times.
Before joining Fiorentina this year, the 6’3″ defender was at AS Nancy and PSV.
AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus were all after the player in 2007-08, and then in January of this year he was transferred from PSV to Fiorentina, for what was described as a hefty fee.
But it appears that he has rarely played for Fiorentina since he signed for them.
Franck Paslerbe explained the reasons behind his client’s decision to leave the Tuscan club, and the main problem seems to be the differences with coach Cesare Prandelli, who has relegated him in the pecking order at the Italian club.
Paslerbe said to L’Equipe:
“There’s incompatibility between him and Prandelli,”
“Even if he plays good games, the coach says that he didn’t do well. We’re heading towards a separation.”
“Marseille contacted us, but the negotiation is still stalled for the time being,”
The 22-year-old defender made his debut for Fiorentina only on September 14th of this year against Napoli.
Despite the certainty of his departure, his destination still remains a mystery, as only one club (Newcastle United?) have stepped forward to sign him so far.
Of course he fits perfectly with the type of player Newcastle want to sign, somebody who is young and still to develop fully, and maybe his unhappiness at Fiorentina could make for a good bargain for Newcastle in January.
We will have to wait and see.
