Joe Kinnear has talked to the Times tay odand said that the bids Newcastle have made for four players, have been initially rejected.
Joe Kinnear – clubs want more money for our targets
Kinnear’s interview also has him talking again about Michael Owen and Joe says Owen is completely committed to the club, but there are some worrying signs that the players we have put in bids for, have not initially been accepted as the club have come back and said they want more.
They sound like Oliver Twist.
We have seemingly made a good fast start in the transfer window, but it’s probably not surprising that where we’ve bid £6M the clubs have come back and said they want more.
Kinnear told The Times today:
“We are miles apart on prices,” “We have offered around £5M or £6M and people are saying they want £10 or £12M.”
Well it’s going to be a roller-coaster in January, but the players they have gone after should be good quality, it’s just whether we can get good deals for them and if we cannot we should let Man City overpay for them – they seem to be good at that.
Hopefully at Newcastle, gone are the days we played daft transfer fees for ordinary players, and then give them wages that were way over the top, so when they didn’t perform we couldn’t offload them. There are lots of examples of players like this.
We’ve wasted so much money over the last 10 years, it’s ridiculous.
On Michael Owen Joe says he’s still committed to Newcastle, but wants to make doubly sure over the next 5 months.
Joe continued:
“I’m pleased in some respects that we still have Owen.” “I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom. I’ve at least got until the end of the season to persuade him to stay.”
“I have discussed that with him. Any sort of success will strengthen the case, for sure. He has been up front with me and I have with him. He said it is a very important decision in his life and that he hoped I accepted that.”
“The contract terms weren’t even mentioned. He’s totally committed to the club, but has to get it clear in his head that he’s making the right decision.”
We’re not exactly convinced that Michael is totally committed to the club, but it would be a nice surprise if he does sign the Newcastle contract offered to him.
But waiting until summer, which is his right of course, is going to be very difficult for the Newcastle club.
Comments welcome.

Do these clubs not realise there is a global cash flow crisis at the moment ?
I hope we stick to our guns and call there bluffs.
or let other clubs pay over the odds for these players.
I guess JK is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. At least he has done the right thing by getting bids in early.
I just hope this isn’t more of Ashleys propoganda, to make himself look good to the fans, while not outlaying anymore cash.
cant believe how cynical I have become 🙂

Comment #3Looks like Fat Cashleys been losing too much in the casinos again…..
Why spend £5M on a player when he can have a good night out and just lose it all?
And of course “black 17” doesn’t have any ongoing wages costs……

Comment #4I’d carry Owens bags to the Central Station for him. You can trace a lot of Newcastles problems down to him signing in the first place. I mean how many supporters were totally convinced of his commitment from day 1. Most appreciate he never really wanted to sign for us so naturally never fully took to the guy. Yes he scored goals for us and thats great but he won’t commit so lets just cut our loses and say goodbye, I’d rather have a 100% committed Shola than a bell end that is always looking for a bigger club coming in for him.

Comment #5I am beginning to wonder about this January transfer period. JK is saying our initial bids are being rejected. I sure hope the next thing to come out of his mouth ISN’T, “We are going to leave it for January and instead wait until the summer”. 🙁

Comment #6All clubs put their prices up before the window opens, the test will be later in the window and how desperate they are for the money, which quite a few clubs will be with the economy the way it is.

Comment #9he will take lower wages if it means getting european football and getting himself back into the England setup. I think he will stay with us till the end of the season as he has already said, and will make his decision then. You cant blame him really.
Hopefully our league position and the type of football we will be playing, will make it hard for him to leave 🙂

Comment #10it annoys me when people say michael owen was not worth the money, yes he was, no body, not even him, was to no his newcastle career with us would be blighted by injury, yes he always had little niggles but no one could say pretty much he would be screwed for knocking on 3 years, true to say newcastle may not have been his first choice, but he came, he scores when he plays, yet people still question him, my only regret for him signing for the toon is that he did not play more, as im sure is his.

Comment #11well ed, considering that all our offers are half what the clubs want for their respective players, i would say we have not made a good start to the window at all……….we have made no start have we! this window will be just like the rest, full of hype, hope and talk but bugger all substance when all is said and done.

Comment #13So that’s 5 or 6 mill for four players in total and not for each presumably (not clear in the article)

Comment #14It doesn’t matter that much….we shouldn’t get into a bidding war and keep jacking up the bid. No way players worth 6 mil should be 12 mil. If we get any player over 10 mil then we are not doing a good job negotiating.
We need young players with potential….no overpriced “stars”.

Comment #15Its called negotiation. I bid 5M you say 9M and we settle at 7M. wouldn’t worry too much…….yet.

Comment #16The word miles apart is quite worring and the reason JK come out and say this to the fans at this early stage?
Don’t get me wong, I like JK to talk to us. The problem is that I can’t trust MA any more. I wonder if he is going to have another excuse for failing to secure enough players for JK.

Comment #19As MDS correctly states, its simple negotiation strategy; buyer offers an initial low price and the seller asks for a higher price. To make the deal, there has to be some kind of compromise on both sides.
Where’s the money coming from; i.e. 4 x £5M or £6M = £20M~£24M?
Maybe we have bid for 4 players expecting to buy 1 or 2 players, maximum 3….
Don’t expect MA to get Newcastle into a bidding war on players. Gone are the days of wasting money on overated football stars.

Comment #20This is not a bidding or negotiation strategy.
You only leak facts on negotiations to someone once the deal is sealed or failed. I mean, we could almost forget the four bids JK had mentioned a few days ago. They will most likely need to look for someone else.
It’s hard to imagine the board would tell us, the fans, how much they were bidding and how much another club is asking for in order to make another club lower the price. This will just anger another party and fail the negotiations if there were really negotiations.

Comment #21a bidding war on players you say, i am all for good negotiation etc but the simple fact is ashley does not invest in the team – ever. 2 million NET in the last three full windows is not what i call investment on the pitch, sorry and all but thats the way i see it.

Comment #22clubs allways want more in january, because it costs them more to replace the players that they lose, and with the world market as it is, u cant blame our owner for what the other clubs want for there players, so UTD111’s comment is totally worthless and a waste of typing tbh

Comment #23all clubs have to pay over the odds for decent players these days not just newcastle, the difference is that other clubs grit their teeth and eventually hand over the cash which we won’t do. that sets us apart from rising clubs like villa and ultimatley it will be what leaves us behind in this league.
