Newcastle Could Still Be Pursuing Gokhan Inler

10:18 am, Friday, December 26th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 25 Comments

With the state of the world economy so dire, it’s a little bit of a surprise that clubs have already asked for more money from Newcastle for the four players we have already bid for.

gokhan-inler-7

Gokhan Inlker - Swiss International available for around £10M?

But there again greed is always there, and that’s what has created this economic mess in the first place, and the clubs will at least try to get the most they can for their players.

It would appear that Newcastle have bid for Matthew Upson from West Ham, Leighton Baines of Everton and 18 year-old Mamadou Sakho of PSG.   Maybe.

We will have also bid for a midfield player, and while that may be Fulham’s Jimmy Bullard, a target of ours in the summer from the Italian league is still available.

It appears Arsenal may also be after Gokhan Inler, the Udinese Calcio midfielder, who was the subject of much interest from Newcastle United this last summer. and the price is now quoted at around £10M, but probably only because Arsenal are also reported suitors.

Inler was linked with Arsenal in the summer and was supposed to have gone to North London to discuss the deal. However with Spanish International and Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas now out for 4 months with a remedial ligament injury (same as what Joey Barton has), Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will be forced to bring in another top midfielder.

With Joe Kinnear having bid around £6M each, for two players, one of them could well be Inler.

The 6′ 0″ central midfielder, who is Swiss but with Turkish descent, has played 23 times for Switzerland, and 43 times for Udinese in the Italian league, since his move there last year.

Inler would be a good acquisition for Newcastle, but if Arsenal are also in for the player, it may prove difficult to get him on Tyneside.

Comments welcome.

He would be the perfect player for us! Ok, I’m swiss yes…but that’s not the only reason I want to see him in black n white ;-)

Please dear santa claus, make it real! And give us 3 points today ;-)

I said this earlier today but this thread seems to be more appropriate,

Just been reading some of yesterdays comments and one of the big points I think people are missing re transfers, is the proposed 5 Brits (or is it English) to a team. So we cannot sign just anyone for the future. I know it’s not as simple as that but it needs to be thought about

    Good point Bill.

It looks like we are at least after Upson and Baines – and maybe even more British players.

Where is this report from? Not that i have any faith in any report of a player coming in. When since the ashley regime moved in do we here who is beeing bought until its already done.

Good, Very good player but I can’t see he will sign for us for now.

For my opinion he will sign for Arsenal if they interest this Jan.

The rumour has it we only have 12 million to spend therefore how can we be after Inlar who is valued at 10 million and Upson who is valued at the 6 million mark and then there is Sakho who i have never seen playing who is rated at the 8 million mark so i’ve heard and then Baines who i think is worth 4-5 million. If they are the players we are supposed to have bid on the i assume there will be a few big stars out the door to compensate some of the money spent. I think Inlar is a little out of reach atm but Upson and Baines is a possibility. Them two players will be excellent signings and we should if they arrive have one of the strongest defences in the EPL. I would not sell Enrique as he has shown in the past few games what a good defender he can be. Tough game today though i would be happy with a draw.

Dante from Standard Liege is transfering to Monchengladbach for 3 mill…….now that’s a daylight robbery if you ask me.
Such a good player in such a bad team for such a small price :-(

  • 10 Partizan // Dec 26, 2008 at 10:44 AM

    Actually its 2 mill….even worse!!

I have only heard about this player in the last 3 weeks!! apparently he is really good!! But I am a bit cautious!!!

    Look at Newcastle previous signings!!!

Dave…..If you watched the game Standard vs Liverpool in the CL 3rd round qualifications……..it was Dante who missed a penalty in the first leg in Liege.

Still an excellent player though,i have no bloody clue what was he thinking signing for a team who has a strong chance of being relegated this season.

Inler to the Toon? Will never happen, though we can dream can’t we?

  • 16 craig chisholm // Dec 26, 2008 at 12:20 PM

we need a top notch creative midfielder and also a replacement for owen and viduka. viduka is not so important really as we have cover and it would be nice to blood through one or two young ens. i think to replace owen though that saviola would be prolific for us. prob is though, the money that is being talked about being made available is not enough to get anyone world class, perhaps ex-world class or potential world class though.

To be fair there is nothing concrete at all about this article! Its pure speculation and i wouldnt be surprised if we hadnt bid on any of these players mentioned! I think this one is a little bit of a cheeky space filler and what i would say to all is; dont get your hopes up on any of these players until you hear something coming from the club!

  • 18 Partizan // Dec 26, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Martin Caceres from Barca would be perfect for loan….CB,LB,RB,DM

What more could you ask for ;-)

  • 19 Simo // Dec 26, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Stil not quite sure why wee are pursuing Upson with Colo, Bassong & Tayls!?
    Someone please answer that!
Baines would be a more than decent acquisition, Sakho – ok, bullard – excellent!!

  • 20 Ross G // Dec 26, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Bill we aint gonna be worried about bringing British in. To be honest im not sure when that rule is gonna be put in action, but mainly it would be 5 from 16 look at our team we field 5 most weeks at least anyways let alone the bench. The likes of Given, Taylor, Butt, Guthrie, Barton, Owen, Duff are all usually starting when fit, so I think this is a poor point. Even then our bench has the likes of Edgar, Harper, Ameobi, Carroll, Lua Lua (brit nationality) so if we can find a cheaper better foreign alternative then we should do it.

  • 21 Sav // Dec 26, 2008 at 1:45 PM

The West Ham midfield duo of Collison and Noble should be worth trying for as the ‘ammers need cash. reportedly. Collison has just signrd a new contract but 6 million ought to make them consider a bid?

  • 22 Doocey // Dec 26, 2008 at 1:49 PM

I agree Martin Caceres would be an excellent signing but the most I’d expect would be a loan deal.
He was bought for the future and it is exactly that he has at Barca.
Can’t see him moving but about Gokhan inler, would be a good signing but isin’t this the sort of player Arsenal are lacking too? :D

please be more optimistic on every players kinnear is targeting…baines no,upson no…what in the hell are you guys thinking…we cannot judge him yes or no..its kinnear to do that…i have faith n optimistic about kinnear more than keegan…all the bids that kinnear had launch was half successful…if its not bcoz of the economic crisis, all the 4 bids was successfully launch..ed harrison said it was rejected coz of the other clubs demanding more money…..

  • 24 Toon_Ksk // Dec 26, 2008 at 2:02 PM

    Partizan,

the bundesliga always attract good players I wonder why. Just look at Hamburg. They aren’t particularly a big club half a decade ago, but they signed VDV and de Jong when there are bigger clubs chasing after their signature.

  • 25 Tom_Toon // Dec 26, 2008 at 2:59 PM

    No chace any longer.

Lets just go for Mehmet Topal.
