Mark Viduka took some stick from Newcastle fans on Friday when Viduka pulled out of a challenge – and then simply walked off the field.
Viduka – torn groin muscle means more time on the sidelines
The Aussie striker, who has just returned from being out six months with an Achilles injury, was taunted by chants of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt.” by the Newcastle faithful.
But Mark Viduka rolled down his track-suit bottoms and said:
” I tried to sprint and I felt a zap in my abductor muscle. Look at it, I’ve had to have it bandaged.”
“I’m out of the Liverpool game on Sunday. It doesn’t matter to me what the fans chanted.”
“To me they are still the best fans in the world. You will have to ask them why they did that because I’ve got no idea.”
His torn groin muscle will mean another lengthy spell on the sidelines, and it’s now almost certain that Newcastle will not pick up the 3rd year option on Mark’s contract, simply because he is always out injured.
The wages he gets at Newcastle exceed £60K/week, since he was signed as a free agent from Middlesbrough 18 months ago, but that’s money down the drain, as Mark has been continually on the sidelines through injury, and is hardly earning his wages.
We’re sure Mark would love to play one more year and finish playing for Australia at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but that may not be possible, since his body seems unable to hold up to the rigors of top class football.
And of course we’re sure Mark is as frustrated as anybody, but if your body cannot stand up to playing football, that’s a time to seriously think about retiring, even if you want to continue playing.
