Steven Gerrard has today paid tribute to the magnificent Newcastle fans, who gave a standing ovation to Gerrard, following his tremendous performance for Liverpool in yesterday’s hammering of Newcastle by 5-1.

Gerrard – Newcastle fans know what football is all about
The 28-year-old Liverpool captain left the field midway through the second-half, after his job was done for the day, to standing applause from all around the packed St. James’ Park, after scoring two and he surely would have had more goals but for a certain Mr. Shay Given in the Newcastle goal.
It was the Reds biggest win of the season, and after the game Steven says he was flattered by the reception he received from the Geordie fans.
“It’s always very flattering to get applause like that.”
“And particularly when you come to a place like Newcastle, where the fans know what football’s about,”
“It was flattering, and much appreciated.”
Good words from Gerrard – and we wonder how much this lad would be worth in the transfer market – if Robinho is worth £32M?
Dream on Jose Mourinho, because he’s not for sale.
Comments welcome.

Not taking anything away from him as he is a great player for Liverpool but we let him control the game by allowing him acres of space – has kinnear never heard of marking key players!
It’ll be interesting to see if the FA will ban him for the assault or is Barton the only person they pick on.
pity he can never produce the same form for England
8 Toon1978 // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:21 PM
If any fans deserve a player of this calibre its NUFC fans unfortunately the ppl most deserving in all walks of life get very little because 90% of the players in the EPL and other leagues know who the best fans are unfortunately fans don’t bring silverware.
9 ryunufc // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:21 PM
none of our players marked him yesterday, sickening
10 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:27 PM
gotta give him the credit he deserves, and im glad he was awarded with the standing ovation from all of us after his performance.
He bosses the game from CM like no one else, is a fantastic passer of the ball, and we’re all too aware of the fact he’s scored some unbeleivable goals, too.

Heard that West ham have slapped a 15 million price tag on Upson. Forget it.

If only we’d managed to look after a certain local lad like Carrick and brought him in through the ranks like Liverpool did with Gerrard.
13 Toon1978 // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:28 PM
Gerrard showed every NUFC player how to pass the ball we couldn’t get the ball off Liverpool for long spells of the game.

I played at Wallsend boys club with Michael Carrick and his brother Greame Carrick and both were good players then. NUFC SHOULD of picked them up BUT KK abolished the reserves when he was here the first time as manager therefore Westham came in and took them into their academy. Greame unfortunately injured himself bad and was let go. M.Carrick has been the lucky one and good luck to the lad like you say he should be in a black and white shirt. Instead of the scouts swanning around Europe they should be looking local.
16 Ericles // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:33 PM
He’s brilliant but personally do not like the arrogance of the bloke. That said I wish he was a Geordie playing for us! News may be that Mort will return as chairman. Replace Lame-arse. Can you start tomorrow? I always recognised Chris Mort as a man of integrity. For Ashley to be a man of integrity, now he stays as owner, let him show some integrity. Cash for needed players, call a truce with KK and compensate him, and kick Wise out of the door! If us fans were not people of integrity we would not have demonstrated, would not have given Gerrard an ovation, and would be there as 52,000 whatever happens. Up to you Ashley? Wise up and ship Wise out.

There are plenty players out there that will do a good job just as good as Upson.

What we wouldn’t give for Steven Gerrard in a toon shirt! he would even make those useless twats half decent! I do think Barton could become as important for us as long as he keeps his nose clean & stays clear of a certain dirty lil smog twat from Wigan!
20 Dan157 // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM
After the last 2 performances it probably would’nt be a bad thing to not know what football is all about. Sadly we all do and can see how garbage we have become.
21 Spyro // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:49 PM
We got our own little Gerrard and his name is Danny Guthrie
The lad is fast becoming one of my favourite players.
22 Dan157 // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I don’t think Guthrie will ever be as much of a goal threat as Gerrard though he is a very good passer of the ball. As for Upson i would’nt pay more than 6 mil for him even though he probably would give us some improvement, especially after yesterday.
23 Toon1978 // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Spyro
Bet you were over the moon when he bagged a one against Portsmouth.
24 Dan157 // Dec 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM
We do need someone like a young Gascoigne or Beardsley to rescue us now. You look at the youth team though and theres only Lua Lua who has shown good prospect in the middle of the park.
25 Antti // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:00 PM
What is the fuss about Upson? He’s injury prone and nearly 30 years old. 15 million is pure madness, and it can’t be true..
26 dougnufc // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Guthrie looks like a good prospect for us. He is a good passer and confident in his shooting from far.
27 The Entertainers // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Double standards :
******************************************
EXAMPLE N.o1:
Harry Redknapp:
“He’s a poor referee and I’ve seen him make a mess of so many games.” “Hes scary.”
FA to take NO action
Joe Kinnear:
“We have got the Mickey Mouse referee doing nothing. He’s made an error that cost us.”
FA charged the Newcastle manager!
****************************************
EXAMPLE N.o 2:
Ricardo Fuller slaps his own captain on pitch.
The FA to take no further action!
Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer slap each other around on pitch.
The FA INCREASE Bowyers 4 game ban to an extra 3 games!
*****************************************
I wonder whether the FA will get involved with Gerrards affray / assault, just like they did with Bartons assault in McDonalds?
Shall i answer that for you, of course they wont!
I know only too well as a Newcastle United fan our club / players dont help theirselves sometimes, but it sticks in my throat when similar incidents slip by the FA!

Guthrie wont ever be as good as Gerrard in all areas mate, but if he ends up half the player Gerrard is i will be over the moon.
Toon1978
Yes i was, and i was very happy when he took the penalty against Wigan too. A proper old fashioned penalty it was, high and out of sight. It wasn’t one of those ‘low and in the corner’ penalties 90% of players do nowadays because they are so scared of missing the target.
29 Dan157 // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Our transfer policy wouldnt make upson eligible for us when it comess to that kind of money. Ashley wants players who are young and can sell on for a profit. Keegan was refused loads of players cos of their age.

That’s just what i have read on numerous sites mate i have not made this up. I wouldn’t pay over 4 million for him we were linked with him about 4 years ago but as ever did not pursue it. DISTIN was another quality player we let go because of wages. We could of had Distin and Upson in the centre of our defence years ago permanent but strange things happen.
32 Dan157 // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:09 PM
Did anyone hear what Ashley wrote in the match programme for the liverpool game.
“If, like me, you like a gamble now and again, then what price a flutter on us reaching that top six?”
We are 10 points off 6th place , 2 from the bottom three, someone should give him a slap and remind him to get his cheque book out soon.

I have read the same stories, I can’t understand how they have come up with 15 million for a player like Upson. maybe it’s because Man City is also interested..
38 Toon1978 // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:17 PM
Veloso is was out of our league unfortunately would be nice though. I think a Skeljbred may be more our stamp at the moment.
39 Spyro // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:19 PM
Veloso is out of our league…who cares?! He is overrated and not the type of DM we need. We need a strong, fast and TALL DM that has a bit of composure.
40 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:20 PM
antti-very true. i’ve said for a while that clubs like man c will end up ruining the transfer market and basically just void any kind of players worth, because when they’re heavily interested in a player, his current club will just say “fine, 50 million and you can have him” and they’ll pay it without question, because money isnt an object. its a shame but its bound to happen eventually and if upson has been given a 15 million price tag, then there’s an early example of it.

Skeljbred we know was a secondary target during the summer. We sold Milner i think in the hope that we would land Schweinsteiger but that will never ressurect itself again so i think he may have moved up on the list.

44 bowburnmag // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:22 PM
Toon1978 – Aye, I remember him. I played for Alan Train in the 5-a-side league. Pretty sure some of the lads I ended up playing with in the 5-a-sides played for Bob before we set a team up called Aztecs. I was in the same 11-a-side team as Nashy (who’s helping run it now) and co. Micky Bridges was the only lad who ever made it big from our lot. Played for Sid Sharp and a few others. Shame we haven’t seen many more playing in black and white. We could do with them.

I quite liked the look of that Insua for Liverpool at left back we were linked with a loan for him not so long ago. Maybe worth another punt.
49 BarmyArmy // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:30 PM
Anyone think Gerrard is going to be treated the same way by people and the media as Barton was after fighting in public???????
I think not !!!
50 Whumpie // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:33 PM
Good point, Spyro – I think Guthrie may just have what it takes to be our Gerrard – or at least a reasonable equivalent (Gerrard is that good, I’m not sure anyone’s going to match him). He just needs to beef up a bit and keep doing what he’s doing.
51 bowburnmag // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Toon1978 – I think so. Was it not Michael Gill? I’ve played senior football since with a few lads who played in the same 11-a-side team as Carrick. They all raved about him but reckon he was a centre-forward back in the day. Never realised that until they told me. Either way, I’d have him up here now. Another one through the net. On topic, Guthrie is a canny little player but will never amount to 2 thirds the player Stevie Gerrard is. He’s immense. We shouldn’t criticise our players too much for allowing him space. He creates it with his movement and decisions. He makes good players look distinctly average. Different class.

Who do you think the better players at PSV Eindhoven are? Might be worth going after a few of them sice they are doing terribly at the moment in the Erdvise considering they have won it the last 7 years. They may need to sell as it does’nt look like they’ll have the champions league money that they will normally get. I thought Afellay looked good when we played them in pre season.
53 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:38 PM
without being too critical, because i like the lad alot and think he shows alot of promise, i think guthrie needs a little more bottle to him. There were just one or two occasions yesterday where he seemed to hold out on the challenge a little and had he went in full tilt would probably have won the majority of his 50/50′s. not that many players were dispossessing liverpool too often yesterday though.
Andy Gray made the interesting point that we’d only conceeded two fouls in the first half, one of them Jonas slipping and clipping insua accidently, so only one really. When we were in the position we were in, we should have been fighting like dogs to win the ball back, leaving a foot in and giving away fouls, we clearly just couldnt get anywhere near them.

yes i think it was Michael Gill mate. I think Carrick was always a midfielder to be honest mate it was his brother Greame who plays up front. I heard Greame is now playing for the Coronation club in Wallsend lol. What a difference between him and his brother. Greame was unlucky unfortunately and he was as good as his brother if not better.
55 Spyro // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Fair point mate. We need to have him fighting for the ball more often and making more runs towards opposition defence.
Also, i was very impressed with young Kazenga yesterday, didn’t seem at all fazed by th eLiverpool superstars did he? IMO we should rest Jonas for the Hull match and instead play Kazenga or Duff on the right. Jonas’ performances have dropped a lot lately and i think it is because he is a bit jaded. He has tended to look tired after about 25minutes.
Dan
I only know about 3 players from PSV mate, not the best with following the Dutch league.
56 bowburnmag // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:48 PM
Toon1978 – the kid I spoke to was good mates with him but it might have been the school team he played upfront for, who knows? I know I played 3 different positions at one point for different sides. Basically, they said you couldn’t touch him. I reffed a couple of games at school for my GCSEs and the games were for the kids 3 years younger. There was a kid called Michael Bond playing. To this day I’ve never seen a kid dominate games like he did. Turned out a wrong ‘un by all accounts. Should have made it on the big stage from I saw and heard about him in his earlier days. It’s a very fine line between earning £50k a week and cleaning chewer of the pavement for a living. Stevie G and Barton being two very different and yet not so different examples of what you can do if you stay on the right side of it.

spyro-jonas does look tired, the work he does down the right is unbeleivable, he’s got a serious engine like but its inevitable that without a rest he’lll start to slow down a little. i’d personally like to see kazenga step up. i think he’s hungry to prove his worth and he definitly deserves a go like.

The other day i was debating with someone whether Sakho would be a good signing as defence didn’t seem to be a priority for them. However, now it is undeniable that we need another versatile defender. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sakho arrive, he is young and probably wouldn’t mind waiting for his chance.

On a slightly different note it has been reported that Gerrard has been arrested following a fight in a pub on Merseyside on 29th December at 2:30 am when the assualted person ended up in hospital because of the affray. What was Gerrard doing in a pub at 2:30 am???
I wonder if he (Gerrard) will be subject to as much media abuse as Barton was. Whereas I in no way condone the actions of Barton I think what is good for one is good for the other and Gerrard if he is found to be part of the affray should be castigated the same way as Barton and called to account by the FA just as Barton was.
Does anyone think this will happen, I think it will be quickly swept under the carpet, if they have carpets in Liverpool?
