There are several reports this morning that teams are after both Newcastle United star goalkeeper Shay Given and left-winger and occasional left-back Charles N’Zogbia.

Shay Given – reported £8M bid from Arsenal
The news this morning is that Arsenal have offered a straight £8M cash deal for Given, who is one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the Premier league, and seems to be getting even better with age.
Of course Tottenham Hotspur will also be interested in the Irishman, and the news today is they could offer 19 year-old left back Gareth Bale as bait in a cash plus player deal for Given.
As far as Charles is concerned, clubs interested in him are touted as Aston Villa, Arsenal and Spurs, and the reports suggest that Martin O’Neill is willing to offer Newcastle £5M for N’Zogbia – which is not enough.
But this may not be a good move in any case for Charles, since O‘Neill is said to want the 22 year-old Frenchman only as a back up to Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and former Newcastle winger James Milner.
Since Charles want to play as many games as he can, this may not be a move that would work for him, even if Newcastle would let him move from Tyneside – which is doubtful.
While it’s good that other clubs recognize we have some good players currently in the squad, the last thing we should be doing in January is selling some of our best players.
What we need to do is add to the squad so we have a bigger squad come February, and with all our best players still intact.
Selling either Given or N’Zogbia would signal some desperation at the Newcastle club, and there should be enough money in the pot to suitably rebuild the squad in January, without having to sell some of our better players.
If there isn’t enough money for transfers, then owner Mike Ashley should get on his bike and leave Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Gareth Bale yes – Given to the Spuds no…and 8m? Having a laugh!
2 Daniel // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM
MA has tried getting on his bike and leaving, he can’t so now we need to accept him. If we could get Bale + 5m or so for Given that’d be a decent deal imo, we’ve got Harper to come in and it’d give Krul/Foster a chance.
Wouldn’t want rid of N’Zogbia.
3 ELFER // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Zoggy for the right money ok, but no way ever to given!
4 Simon // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I would obviously rather we got rid of harper, but the main thing would be that the youngsters would then be given the chance, something krul for one needs. I think bale plus cash would be hard to turn down

To be fair, what has zoggy offered us except of the goal against the spuds? Face it, he simply can not cross and every leftback will have a very hard time if he plays in front of him!!
We need players who alse work up and down the line, zoggy isn’t playing backwards as jonas does and that’s causing us problems!
11 Dan157 // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Is this part of Ashley’s plan to ‘Drive the club forward into 2009′ more like piledrive it into the ground.
12 Daniel // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:33 AM
nufc4life – yes we would, Milner cannot play in the centre of Midfield and is a worse player than Jonas.

Our squad is’nt big enough to start selling, what if we sell and then aren’t able to land our targets afterwards.

nufc4life, saying that we must not let go anyone, don’t you think all other clubs also think like that?

16 steve // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:36 AM
“Ashley should get on his bike and leave Newcastle” – where have you been, he’s been trying to do that for months and can’t find a buyer.
I’m in two minds about Given – on one hand I think he should stay as he’s a proven world class goalie but on the other he’s been a great loyal player for th etoon and probably deserves to end his career winning some silverware which sadly isn’t going to happen at the toon. However I think a bid of between 12-15 million is realistic.
Zogs is a strange one as he seems to often be “misquoted” in the press as saying he wants to leave – he’s been one of newcastle best players of late and it would be a shame to lose him but as they say you can’t keep someone against thier will and we should try and get maximum money for him – I reckon we should be able to get between 10-12 million

Who is he mate? Also, can you post a link?
18 Nick // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Why does everyone always fear the worst.
Mentally I think Shay needs to move for his own sanity. He’s earned it. Having the best keeper didn’t alter the result. If we can get 8-10M for a 33 year old and still have Harper and much more importantly KRUL (best young keeper bar none,) then it’s not so bad.
N’Zogbia runs in to too many blind alleys and loses the ball far too many times. Lua Lua looks a far better bet to me.
But above all we need to get rid of Joke kinnear as he is turning out to be just another Allardyce.
19 Legs // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Zog could be molded into brilliance, I believe the word is potential. Something our teams OAP’s no longer have.
The problem being we don’t have the coaches or manager to develop talent. Give Charles to Arsene for a season or two and they’d have a star IMO.
20 xisco biscuits // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:39 AM
ELFER – hard to argue with that mate. i liek zog but he hasnt improved enough over the last year or two. he doesnt protect his full-back, he’s woeful at left-back and his final ball and decision-making has not improved enough. if we were to sell him we’ve got be looking for £10m minimum, and NOT before we have a replacement in the bag
as for given i think all we can do is say, “we’ve had a bid, are you interested?” if he says yes then we let him talk so long as the bid is good for us. he deserves a shot at trophies!! also, we need to start giving krul a chance or we’ll lose the future best keeper in the prem. i’d ask arsenal for a player + £5m cash for shay

I have never seen a crowd of people egged on by Ed so willing to be full of doom and gloom.
Pray tell Ed – “If there isn’t enough money for transfers, then owner Mike Ashley should get on his bike and leave Newcastle.”……..and your source is?
And I thought this was a time for all NUFC fans to row in the same direction for once, in tough times over countless years the people in the area drive through problems. What makes some football fans the exception to the rule?
It seems we love to twist winge and wind ourselves into a frenzy over things we know nothing about……….and on and on and on
29 Whumpie // Dec 30, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Dont understand how any of you can talk badly about Milner.
He is part of a first team challenging for a Champions league position and is getting regularly played by their manager along with being in the top assists table because of that.
If he didnt do that well for us, it suggests that WE were not using him correctly…..not that he is bad. Clearly better managers can see his potential that we were not using. Same with many of our players tbh, probably thrive at other sides.

johnny nufc…………at last some reason regarding milner. he is very good and the fact that liverpool – the team that made us look like sunday league at best wanted him. he’s now gone to villa and they are in a champ league spot and pushing hard. milner does also score goals, someone on here has said he scores none. well, he chips in with about 6 a season for us when he was here, i think he is better than jonas too. we only sold milner cos ashley thought he could get jonas for next to nowt. i see that the tribunal will decide in jan if we have to pay 12 million for jonas or not. that would be funny, we will have ended up getting shot of a winger that scores goals and forked out even more for a one that has none in him. i hope ashley doesnt turn around and say there is no money avaialble cos he has to pay for jonas if we loose the appeal.

Paddy Kenny. LOL!!!!
Possibly one of the worst keepers I’ve seen, he was behind the trashing we got against Cyprus (he got help all right from the rest of the team but he was shocking.) He is the complete opposite to Given, unreliable, he’s not even average.
Anyway. I laughed the rumours off about Given as I always do, but now, they are coming more strongly, more consistantly and after seeing how upset the wee lad was on the weekend..it’s got me wondering, worrying.

Those who wrote saying ashley tried to get away are spot on,he didnt manage it so now lets get behind him..If Given & nzogbia want to leave can we really blame them???? The toon are a club going backwards…Given has been loyal to the toon and is getting no younger, his last chance to win stuff would be to move now & if its true about Arsenal Id jump at the chance if I were him…..As for Nzogbia,I dont really blame him either, yes he is a moody player but he also is a quality player and some managers we’ve had have never realised this,he is ambitious and if he is saying he wants to move on Get what we can…The sooner people realise the toon are not the club they once were the better,The clubs a shambles…There are worrying times ahead…Im toon through and through but sometimes we need to take those black and white glasses off and see things from a players point of view…..These foreign players dont have black and white running through their veins so they never see the club like the fans do…..

Milner is better going forward than Spiderman. Its funny that the lad gets stick for his lack of end product, when surely you could say exactly the same about Spidey. I think both are decent players but there’s not much between them. Spidey is hard working but does most of his best work too deep to be truly effective.

Ashley back with a clean slate?
Well selling isn’t going to help us stay in th EPL, although I agree with those who say Given “deserves” a chance at silverware, it will again show Ashley’s intent if he agrees to sell 1st team players.
Well January will again speak volumes in Ashley’s reign as Toon owner, don’t mess it up AGAIN.
59 StevieA // Dec 30, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Macas Milner had no end product whatsoever. 12 million is a hell of a price for a winger with no end product.
Jonas will improve you will see the best out of him next season once he has had time to adapt. We also need better players around him to bring the best out of both him and Colo.
60 StevieA // Dec 30, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Given doesn’t want to leave. He has always said he wants to stay at Newcastle and always dismisses the rumours. We have no reason not to believe him.
I am in two minds though because he deserves a move for the loyalty he has shown but sometimes keepers are happy to stay put rather than move to other clubs and that’s fair enough.
61 Vitorbarbosa // Dec 30, 2008 at 1:04 PM
Looking at how we are going this season, I think we should “sell” Given to a top club so that he can realishes his ambition.
I think we “owe” him success which he deserved.
We are playing nothing like challenging for European places, and he is just wasting time trying to think we can do it next season.
I’m sick with our current results, and all I want now is all the best for our Best Players.
They deserve a lot more from NUFC.
It might takes longer to rebuild later, but I want Given to be well in the future.

63 StevieA // Dec 30, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Vitorbarbosa – I totally agree with that. It’s interesting that we have been watching other keepers, we obviously have a plan in place in case Given leaves. Apparently we have been watching Stekelenburg this season from Ajax.
The only way we would let Given go is if he wanted to go to further his chances of winning something or if we have someone younger and potentially better lined up. Would Stekelenburg be potentially better than given in the long run?
64 Macas // Dec 30, 2008 at 1:14 PM

We won´t win anything with Given. I´ll say this time and again. A good keeper is a keeper who shouts confidence in his defense. Given doesn´t do that. The defense must sometimes realize that Given is not there to do their job. A good keeper commands the box. That my friends, given does not.
You could look at Peter Cech, he makes the saves when he really has to. A good keeper is a sound keeper, a safe keeper. It´s not about showcasing your saving abilities. Then people are very mistaken. Given is more of a keeper that invites the shot for his saves. He´s not good for the team, hence he´s not a good keeper. If Wenger is interested in him I´ll be amazed and that will be the beginning of his demise. We need to offload him soon. Sooner rather than later. Then we´ll start improving.

74 toonSEA // Dec 30, 2008 at 2:52 PM
why don’t we just get relegated this season, then all of our best players would have strong reasons to leave NUFC. Players like Owen, Given, Beye, Taylor, Jonas and Martins deserve to get chances of silverware at better clubs. I can say that NUFC have been holding up their potential for honors. They did everything they could for NUFC but the club is just not in the right track of achieving even a UEFA Cup spot. So I say, let’s get relegated, let the best players have their chances at other clubs, rebuild the team from scratch, and hopefully get back up to the premier league again with a bang. This way the expectations would be lowered anyway, after all the years of unrealistic expectations.

86 Tom_Toon // Dec 30, 2008 at 4:58 PM
1. He will cost £12mil+
2. He wont come if he knows we want to play him in mdifield.
3. We can get a better midfielder than he is for half of £12mil.
Completely pointless suggestion.
87 Ian // Dec 30, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Wigaz I wouldnt sell Ameobi or Gerami, but agree with the rest, what about Barton too?
Cant think that Bullard would be for sale now, he is a brilliant player.
There are supposed to be funds available on top of sales to bring a player to the club, we should make a bid for Bellamy, he is a flexible player, obviously a good striker, but is excellent on the left wing and could play a Gerrard type role if need be.
88 Ian // Dec 30, 2008 at 5:08 PM
Tom_Toon to replace Owen when he leaves not to keep in midfield, but until next summer ask him to play a Gerrard type role.
One thing about Craig Bellamy he will move positions, left wing, right wing, midfield, striker and awkward as his personality is often said to be, he doesnt refuse, the only place I havent seen him play is in defense.
If we could get him this window then we arent worried about getting a striker next Summer or waiting for owen yet again.
89 Ian // Dec 30, 2008 at 5:12 PM
If we can think two steps instead of one then we wont be ratching about again in a panic in the Summer.
Bellamy has always said he would like to return to us, we could do with another player like Martins who is 100% for our club, Owen and Viduka dont care about this club at all.
90 Ageordiedoonsooth // Dec 30, 2008 at 5:32 PM
If we are going to sell Given then it needs to be for at least £10m & why would he want to go to Spurs for Arsenal maybe. As for NZogbia if we get £10m – £12m then sell him. We certain ly don’t need Kenny from Sheffield Utd Harper is much better & we’ve got some decent young keepers. If we sell these then use the money to buy some decent outfiled players
91 CLINT FLICK // Dec 30, 2008 at 5:45 PM
Sadly, we don’t actually need Given.
Hes been a great servant but we’ve got plenty of cover & hes no better than Harper & he whinges when his reputation doesn’t get him picked.

This may sound strange,
But I don’t rate Bale that highly as a LB. He had this huge reputation and then failed to deliver.
Also Given has said MANY times that he is happy here and these days how much would he win at Arse anyway!
95 nu // Dec 30, 2008 at 5:53 PM
CLINT FLICK i agree hrps is as good as sell given and cash in
96 CLINT FLICK // Dec 30, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Hell why not?
Harper did great last season & showed a really pro temprament, keeping fit, waiting for his chance, only to be dropped to keep Given happy.
i hate it when players doing a great job get dropped just cuz the reputation player gets fit again. Harper did nowt wrong & Shay should have had to win his place back, but didn’t, he just gobs off in the press, saying stuff like i’ll leave if you don’t drop the form player for me.
Selfish.
97 Simo // Dec 30, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Lets be honest, no one who we could bring in will be as good as Shay but I would be tempted by a money + Bale offer.
We’re in dire need for a left back, and with Harps & Krul already at the club we wouldn’t even have to invest in a new keeper!
Look at what Krul did vs Palermo – Yeah it was only one performance but i’d say it’s enough potential to give him a go!!

To keep Given happy.
You honestly think, you’re that naive and gullable to think that all those managers played him to keep him happy, for 11 years. Tell me you’re not that gullable that you’re able to believe that. I mean really.
Harps is a good lad. But he’s not as good as Given. We all know that. On top form and top fitness, head to head, Given is the better keeper.
Harps had an excellent chance to take the jersey off him, he’d played well, Given hadn’t been fit, he’d been injured. Harper had a great chance, but at then end of the day he didn’t want it as much, he didn’t fight hard enough. Given fought and fairly won.
Keegan had no preforances, if anything he would have fancied Harper over Given as he bought him himself. But Given fought harder, was fitter then anyone, he didn’t go on holidays, he didn’t take a break, he worked and worked and it’s paid off, clearly because he’s back to his best if not better. Harps had a btter chance then ever of getting the no.1 shirt. Been on good form, Given had been injured, and he was Keegan’s lad. If anything he could well have prefered him as it he bit Harper way back when.
Given won the jersey back fair and square and his form has justified it.
You don’t think that Harper would have walked if it was unfair.
Given is a gent, one of the nicest people you could meet. The players love him, he’s a massive figure in the dressing room. He’s modest, he never takes praise, always giving credit to the defenders in front of him and the rest of the team when they didn’t deserve it.
Harper didn’t do anything wrong, no, but Given outfought him.
“he just gobs off in the press, saying stuff like i’ll leave if you don’t drop the form player for me.
Selfish.”
BULL, The biggest load of bull I’ve ever heard.
When show me one piece of mouding off to the media..fukin made up shite.
100 years ago he wasn’t getting game time so he wanted to leave, something he was entitled to, something Harper or anyone else on the team is entitled to.
Something you think Harper should have done, grant it there was never anyone coming after him but, you think that a more motivated player would have looked to leave.
And that was ONCE about 7 years ago.
Your post is a joke, it’s bull.
Given has been first choice 99% of the time and there’s a reason for that and everyone involved with the club over the years can tell you why. There’s a reason why he’s always been no.1.
There’s a reason why the likes of Arsenal have always shown interst over the years.
There’s a reason why he’s gotten massive praise from the likes of Henry and Gerrard and such.
Your post is based on nothing but personal hate and biterness for Shay for some reason.
Are you and Johan the same person??
101 hanzowen // Dec 30, 2008 at 6:53 PM
if true why not take the 8M to buy some good players as our much-needed reinforcement in this Jan. Given is no doubt a good goalie but we still can rely on Harper & other some safe hands between the posts.

Are ye off yere head??
FIrst of all him starting has clearly been justified by the preformances.
He’s gotten better, as keepers do, with age.
There’s a reason why manager after manager after manager picked him instead of Harper.
And Clint Flick if you are naive and gullable enough to believe that that was to keep him happy, that more then half a dozen managers over 11 years have all kept him in goals just to keep him happy. Please don’t tell me that you are that gullable to believe shite like that.
Harper is a great goalkeeper, a great lad, you don’t think that if that was the case that he would have walked, you think that little of all the managers and that little of Harper??
I know he comes across a wee bit unmotivated seeing as most think that he should have left and gone somewhere else because he was getting no game time. But you really think that little of Harper to think he’d just stay there, despite that.
I like them both but when it comes down to it, when it comes down to backs against the wall, Given will always and has always come out fighting the strongest.
Harper had a great chance of winning the No.1 jersey in the summer.
Shay had been injured and unfit and his form had suffered from that.
Harper had played well, and he was Keegan’s lad, he was always going to fancy him more seeing as he bought Harps in the first place.
But they went head to head and, what I’m told was one hell of a fight, Given won. At the end of the day, he wanted it more. He worked harder, is the fitest he’s ever been in his life and has improved a lot, he no longer is held back (mentally and physically) by that awful injury.
Given came out on top and won the jersey back fair and square.
Like I said, I think if it was anything else Harps would have left a long time ago, clearly though you don’t think much of either keeper the way you’re talking though, or the club or the managers that have come and go to think that he was played to purely keep him happy..sorry, I’ve gone over it allready, I just can’t get over that you actually think that.

No Harper did nothing wrong, he was just beaten by a better keeper, a keeper that has been praised by just about everyone.
Who’s been on Premiership team of the year several times, has won two FAI player of the year awards, and is nominated for another this year..and if Given continues to play like he’s been playing this season there’s no reason why he wont get on team of the year again.
“he just gobs off in the press, saying stuff like i’ll leave if you don’t drop the form player for me.”
I’m sorry, with all due respect, that is the most ridiculous, bitter post I’ve read on here. And it’s based on just that, bitterness and hate, not fact., just bullshit.
100 years ago, Given wanted to leave because he wasn’t getting game time..which he’s entitled to, as is everyone at every club, something Harper could have, and some say should have done.
But that was ONCE about 9 years ago. Grow up.
“Selfish.”
And selfish, if you could find a word that would be in stellar opposite to what’s actually true..you’ve found it.
Given is a gent, he’s so modest, he never takes due credit, always giving it to others when they don’t deserve it, he is nothing but honest and a genuinely nice person who has given so much to this club, his charity, the fans, the shirt. No one works harder then him, he never gives up and you’re on here saying he’s selfish..

In 2001 he wanted to leave because he wasn’t getting game time..it’s what a lot of players do. Nothing came of it though because his transfer request was refused and Harper got injured pretty much straight after that. let me guess, Given’s fault as well right??
And he didn’t moan last season and you wont be able to find a single article showing that. Like I said anti Given lies and bullshit.
And how many keeper of the year, saves of the season/month, NUFC players of the year/month, Irish player of the year..etc, awards has he won.
How much praise has he gotten from the greats like Wenger, Trapatoni, Gerrard, Henry..etc.
How many times has he gotten the MOTM awards.
..Ya, they most be all in on the conspiracy to, just to keep him happy.
You can’t see me now, but I’m rolling my eyes.
Pure and utter hate, bitterness, anti Given bullshit with not one ounce of anything at all to back your claims up.

And genious, seeing as 9 million is the record transfer fee in England for a goal keeper..8 million for a 32 year isn’t that bad, and aren’t Spurs/City, can’t remember which, saying they’ll double that.
Irish players don’t seem to do Europe, they just don’t like the sun. English players don’t do Europe either, not really.
And Real Madrid, incase you haven’t notice only buy massive overrated names .
And Trappatoni has said that AC Milan and co should buy him.
114 Macas // Dec 31, 2008 at 8:20 AM
Reillers – Given had only been out for about 2 games when he spat his dummy, not a very professional thing to do in my opinion, considering how good a keeper Harper is and how patient he had been. He has certainly improved a lot since he first came to the club, but that’s got a lot to do with getting a regular place in the team, something Harper hasn’t had. I dont think there’s much between the two and I’d gladly take £10M for Given so we can strengthen elsewhere, as Ashley isnt going to stump up much in transfer funds.
115 reillers // Dec 31, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Given wanted first team football and 8 or 9 years ago he wanted to leave because he wasn’t getting game time and felt he wouldn’t be anytime soon. Is there something wrong with that.
As it happened his transfer request was denied and nothing became of it because Harper got injured and Given never looked back.
And I’m still waiting for the Sams one.
Where show me proof. Shockingly there is none.
