The transfer window opens tomorrow, so does that mean we will have 3 new players before Saturday?

Joe Kinnear - asks for calmness during January
Just kidding, but Joe Kinnear probably is well aware how anxious the Geordie faithful are to strengthen our squad next month, and Joe has spoken today on the latest situation at the club regarding incoming transfers:
“The fans need to know there is a lot of work going in regarding transfers in the background.”
“We are making offers for players at the moment.”
“Offers have been made, but then you must wait for the clubs to come back to you.”
“They will wait to see what other clubs offer and take it from there.”
“Loans are a good option for us, and if we can get quality loan signings in we are making progress to tide us over.”
That’s good news from Joe, and we’re sure he’s very involved with the Board on our targets, and that’s good to hear, after the almighty mess the Newcastle Board seemed to create with Kevin Keegan during the summer.
We seem to want both Joe Ledley of Cardiff and Michael Kightly of Wolves, both excellent young players, but we cannot see much of a chance of getting either of them in January, although we could pursue them further in the summer, and our chances would then depend on whether their clubs are able to gain promotion.
Joe will have to wait at least until he gets a formal response from their clubs, before he can move forward and go after other players on the Newcastle transfer list.
Joe has said he has around 10 players on that list, so we should be able to get some decent players in during January, although it’s always much harder than in the summer, because clubs hardly want to lose players in the middle of a season, especially those that are pushing for promotion.
And don’t believe just because we go down the list, the players will not be as good, because transfers are always uncertain, and you just never know how a player will turn out at Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

I said it on a previous entry. We need players in ASAP. We can’t wait until the end of January. We have a injury crisis and we have some big games in the league coming up. I think Finnan would be a good loan signing. But itsounds like Ashely doesn’t want to splash the cash! If that is this case, we could be heading down!

Ashley is his own worst enemy he nneds to spend the money to keep us in the PL if he does not there is a chance we will go down therefore the value of the club will go down.

Willie McKay’s comments wouldn’t have done the club much good either.

Why do we keep harping back to when KK was here??? he’s gone & no matter how hard we try, he’s not coming back, so forget what KK did & try to back what JFK is trying to do for us & lets stick together no matter who he brings in next month.. lets just hope that he brings in enough players to help keep us in the EPL this season & then we can concentrate on the summer transfer window then…
7 Whumpie // Dec 31, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Loan signings are fine for now, but it would be good to see one permie come in. Not that there are many of them available in any January window.
And Ed – thanks for putting “we seem to” on the front of the re-cycled tabloid rumours. It’s at least a step in the right direction!
One criticism of JFK I’ve had is that he often makes statements that are later downgraded (e.g. about MO signing in a few days, etc.) and eventually dropped. We may find ourselves struggling to the end of the season with just one or two lesser-known players on loan, so we’d better get used to that.
My main worry is that people will get upset when we don’t sign half a dozen top players from champs league teams; patience and realism aren’t common around here!
I’d rather just get to the end of the season still in the premiership, and mount a proper rebuilding bid in the summer. I suspect that’s what Ashley’s after too, and we should understand that. After all, does anyone expect anything out of this season? Better to hold onto your money than pay over the odds just because it’s January.

Loan deals to me aren’t a great idea, they haven’t really worked for us in the past ie Rossi or in the present ie the uruguayan ( forgotton his name). Even when we do loan a successful player like Distin or Saha he leaves and signs for another club anyway. I guess what i’m trying to say is loaning players at this stage doesn’t seem to fit in with the policy of building for the future, because they’ll be off by the end of the season. Lastly they should scrap the transfer windows.
42 keith // Dec 31, 2008 at 3:36 PM

43 StevieA // Dec 31, 2008 at 3:40 PM
Loan deals are fine if they are with a view to a permanent deal. Lots of clubs take advantage of this – look at Everton with Pienar. Portsmouth with Belhadj.
I would prefer good quality permanent signings though ideally but it depends who we can get on loan.
44 toonoholic // Dec 31, 2008 at 3:50 PM
and before i leave , i personally believe loan deal is just a temporary solution.
when was the last time we signed a player that played for us on loan ? i dont remember!
someone before said larsson worked for manchester united , what they forget to address us , manchester then needed a temporary solution.
for us , a left back, right back, dm and a creative midfielder has been a permanent solution.
if u say get players on loan for rm, i can agree to some extent , but no crap about getting a lb and rb on loan . we really have no cover there .
alright say we get players on loan for positions out there, they do well and we dont sign? then we start the process of rebuilding again.
what we forget that there is as such no rule in the book to say that summer is time to rebuild.
even if we start mid season and sign free agents who really help us , its the right start.
if we sign a player on loan for us , thats mint.
peace

magpie,
are you actually serious?? SELL collocini, use your head mate. that would be pathetic. GLEN JOHNSEN, hes average and onli ever rated because he is english.
if what u said were to happen, we probably would be relegated. half the players you mentioned are young overrated english aplyers(mostly), take off the blinkers mate.
why do ppl in their right mind think we should sell the likes of enrique, xisco, given and even nzogbia, its mindless! enrique is young and mistake prone yet improvin, JFK hardly considers xisco a player and has treated him awfully. given is our only world class player( so yea why dont we sell him, pathetic) he is worth 20 million to us at least for all d goals he prevents. nzogbia is inconsistent but to sell him would be short sighted.
seriosuly ppl we do NOT need to sell out whole team, we need a good manger/coachin set up which we do not have and a quality, creative AM. spyro you keep mentionin a DM, but i think guthrie could do that role as at times our creativity in non existant( tho a DM along barton would work)

Tony Adams looks like he is going to let Lauren go for the right price in this window. I think he would be a bargain and good cover for RB as well as standing in at LB. I realise he is old but he still has a lot to offer. He would also be a good experienced head in the back which is what we need right now after some shambolic defending in the past couple of games. Just my opinion so don’t slaughter me
48 Spyro // Dec 31, 2008 at 3:57 PM

That is what KK said as well, but i feel Guthrie is wasted at DM. Guthrie looks best to me when he pushes forward to around the box. When in that area he generally makes a really good use of possession by other holding up play, having a decent pop at goal, or makes a clever little pass.
I have watched him closely since Barton got injured and aside from Bassong, Guthrie has been our best outfield player.

look spyro, most of what you say is correct and you would know what your talking about more than I(im more a rugby man tbh) but does guthrie have enough quality to create as we rarely seem to create anything without martins up front. i do rate guthrie but am not sure as to his best role! but tbh we need a top class CM full stop. i would be happy with any type as long as he is top class.
i think we will have a better 2nd half too whumpie but we wont set anything alight. fair play to JFK for what he has done, he has balls, he is a hard hard worker but if we are to progress as a club, joe is not the man. all his comments are great(but have the undercurrent of defendin himself and bumpin up his crdentials).
52 bill // Dec 31, 2008 at 4:03 PM
My gut feeling says we will be beaten by Hull and have nothing else to do for the rest of the season but try to avoid relegation. That is realistic.
As I mentioned before, the noises out of SJP go from “we will get in several players”, then it’s “we won’t pay over the odds”, then it’s “keep calm over transfers”, then it’s “other teams have to decide if they want to sell”, then it will be, “we will get in some loans for cover until the summer”. Then in the summer when we have been relegated it will be, “we thought that we had enough cover but with hindsight maybe we could have done things differently”.
They talk a load of shite. All I want is the truth, but this lot seem incapable of saying anything that isn’t a lie.
I doubt if Ashley will buy anyone because I’m damn well sure he will sell up in the summer. To that I can just say “thank God for that”.

“does guthrie have enough quality to create as we rarely seem to create anything without martins up front”
Fair point, i spoke about this the other day. My personal opinion is that Guthrie is not anywhere near creative enough yet to be our sole provider in the middle. He generally makes around 3 or 4 great passes per game with the rest just side or back passes. We need to get Guthrie putting those great passes in on a more consistent basis and we will definitely reap the benefits.
However, i don’t think this will be possible until he is partnered with a proper DM he can rely on defensively, who also has a bit of technical ability.

tino97 et al;
Let’s be serious here. Purchasing players involves a business transcation between clubs after agreeing on a price.
Some bloggers seem to think purchasing players is as simple as just picking a list of players you would like and then picking them up as you would groceries.
With player availablity, club/player negotiations and competition from other clubs for the top players it is understandable how a wish list of 10 or more players can result in few actual transfers in such a limited window.
Let’s keep it real and hope that Joe has identified achievable targets that will strengthen the team.

Sokho
Johny Evans
Bridge
Sissoko
Moutinho
Veloso

Before anyone starts with the “Oh! he/they would`nt come here”(provincial inferiority complex) Yes they would if the money was right.
Why do you think players from around the globe play in the PL, cause they like the physical nature of the game?
Its because of the pay check and if NUFC want to be a competitive club they have to pay the going rate, there are no cut price champions.
Which leaves us with lowered expectations for the foreseeable future a mid table side, fighting relegation each year.
Ah well!
66 John // Dec 31, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Expectations are raised sky high as we approach another transfer window but reading between the lines I think our main target is to get some exerienced players in. on loan. In other words be prepared for a relegation scrap with all in sundry. A pleasant thought indeed for all us fans.
Ashley can’t afford relegation but at the same time it looks as though he doesn’t want to commit money to transfers. The conclusion therefore is that he still wants to sell the club and is only willing commit to a short term fix.

I wonder how much truth is in this article below? A double swoop at Toulouse would make sense..
Joe Kinnear is set to launch a double raid on French side Toulouse to help guide Newcastle away from the relegation zone. Defender Albin Ebondo and midfielder Moussa Sissoko are the two players on Kinnear’s wish list.Ebondo is a former French U21 player and speculation has been mounting that he is set to leave Toulouse after he lost his place to Daniel Congre last month.
Kinnear will have his work cut out to sign Sissoko as Italian side Fiorentina are also keen on the 19-year-old Malian to boost their chances of breaking into the Champions League.
Toulouse head coach Alain Casanova said: “We are expecting some offers and we will value what is best for the club.”

We aren’t going to overhaul the team in January, that would be a bad move. We need to plug some holes to make sure we stay up and then make more sweeping changes in the summer, when we have a manager.
If we can get rid of some deadwood (Ameobi, Smith, Geremi, Butt, Cacapa) that would be good. But we need to bring in players to improve us in those and other areas.
I’d like Bridge (with Enrique to back-up). Finan would be a good loan signing while Beye is hurt. A true CB and DCM are priorities as Colo is suspect and slow and Butt is done.
Like every transfer window we have so many holes to plug it’s almost overwhelming.

Yes-the “silly season” is here again. It’s always fun to predict who the club will go after in the window. Some feel we need the tried and true, hard working, maybe not world class, player to plug right in to our starting 11. Others would have us pick up a superstar and some youth. Still others would prefer to build the team from youth. It’s all good. But just remember, no matter who they might be, until we see them signing a contract and holding a black and white shirt with their name on it, don’t believe everything you hear.

Lets give JK a chance!!!! Since he came in he’s done a pretty good job in stopping the rot. Give him some credit and he is looking to ensure the toons survival in the PL. He obviously has targets in sight that would strengthen the team to mount an assault in moving up the table and progressing in the FA cup. Its time to stay calm and wait and see what happens – as they say patience is a virtue!!!!!!

Chuck – I think that those who want to sell Given want to do it for at least 12 million. I personally want him to stay but he isn’t the best keeper in the world. Although he is as good a shot stopper as there is, he doesn’t command his box, is poor on crosses and doesn’t talk to his defenders. 12 million is alot of money. Harper is a great keeper too. I just want to see a lb, cb, cm and a striker come in. 4 decent players with n o departures would be great. I still think Owen will go and Ashley will get whatever he can for him. If the transfer window goes the same as the last one with a significant departure (owen or given) and no decent signings then MA might have a real problem.

we need atleast 4 new players to stay up, i think we’ll get that many, but i have no idea how quality they will be. The french players were linked with may be sensible as Kinnear scouted for Wenger and you know how much he loves his frenchies.
Pplease get some good players Ashley!

I am hearing a few whispers of Dioup coming in. I would be over the moon if we signed big Papa. He is a combative midfieder, highly underated and has a pretty good eye for goal to owhen full of confidence.

i cant understand why manager wait for the end of the transfer window to get players.
the phrase “the earlier the better” doesnt people understand?
young championship loan players? YES why not? more players the better, and the good one plays and those bad players stay on the bench…

Look I dont like MO from a personal point of view but to say he has no pace or strength is nonsense.
MO has bulked up enormously as of late check out a before and after shot of his legs, they are twice the size of a yeat ago.
And as far as pace, perhaps cant match his early 20`s but there`s still plenty of ability to get about.
Do you think Mourinho would go for a shot player, Eh !

Not only do I disagree with your assesment of Shea as a goalie, you remind me of the so called fans who have their favorite target they get on each week.
A constant criticism eventualy becomes fact for those who dont have the skills to asses for themselves.
For instance I have watched Duff play a pretty good game only to see in these columns claims he was awfull.
My point is this, without Given this team is weaker, no matter who was bought with the fee got for him, a good goalie is worth gold.
He is in his prime, it`s no wonder clubs are after him, big clubs!
Anyhow rest my case on the fact any team in the PL would be happy to have him on their roster.
So get real and consider our having him on the team is a positive.
