The transfer window opens tomorrow, so does that mean we will have 3 new players before Saturday?
Joe Kinnear – asks for calmness during January
Just kidding, but Joe Kinnear probably is well aware how anxious the Geordie faithful are to strengthen our squad next month, and Joe has spoken today on the latest situation at the club regarding incoming transfers:
“The fans need to know there is a lot of work going in regarding transfers in the background.”
“We are making offers for players at the moment.”
“Offers have been made, but then you must wait for the clubs to come back to you.”
“They will wait to see what other clubs offer and take it from there.”
“Loans are a good option for us, and if we can get quality loan signings in we are making progress to tide us over.”
That’s good news from Joe, and we’re sure he’s very involved with the Board on our targets, and that’s good to hear, after the almighty mess the Newcastle Board seemed to create with Kevin Keegan during the summer.
We seem to want both Joe Ledley of Cardiff and Michael Kightly of Wolves, both excellent young players, but we cannot see much of a chance of getting either of them in January, although we could pursue them further in the summer, and our chances would then depend on whether their clubs are able to gain promotion.
Joe will have to wait at least until he gets a formal response from their clubs, before he can move forward and go after other players on the Newcastle transfer list.
Joe has said he has around 10 players on that list, so we should be able to get some decent players in during January, although it’s always much harder than in the summer, because clubs hardly want to lose players in the middle of a season, especially those that are pushing for promotion.
And don’t believe just because we go down the list, the players will not be as good, because transfers are always uncertain, and you just never know how a player will turn out at Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3I said it on a previous entry. We need players in ASAP. We can’t wait until the end of January. We have a injury crisis and we have some big games in the league coming up. I think Finnan would be a good loan signing. But itsounds like Ashely doesn’t want to splash the cash! If that is this case, we could be heading down!

Comment #4Ashley is his own worst enemy he nneds to spend the money to keep us in the PL if he does not there is a chance we will go down therefore the value of the club will go down.

Comment #5People do need to calm down.
Willie McKay’s comments wouldn’t have done the club much good either.

Comment #6Why do we keep harping back to when KK was here??? he’s gone & no matter how hard we try, he’s not coming back, so forget what KK did & try to back what JFK is trying to do for us & lets stick together no matter who he brings in next month.. lets just hope that he brings in enough players to help keep us in the EPL this season & then we can concentrate on the summer transfer window then…

Comment #7Loan signings are fine for now, but it would be good to see one permie come in. Not that there are many of them available in any January window.
And Ed – thanks for putting “we seem to” on the front of the re-cycled tabloid rumours. It’s at least a step in the right direction!
One criticism of JFK I’ve had is that he often makes statements that are later downgraded (e.g. about MO signing in a few days, etc.) and eventually dropped. We may find ourselves struggling to the end of the season with just one or two lesser-known players on loan, so we’d better get used to that.
My main worry is that people will get upset when we don’t sign half a dozen top players from champs league teams; patience and realism aren’t common around here!
I’d rather just get to the end of the season still in the premiership, and mount a proper rebuilding bid in the summer. I suspect that’s what Ashley’s after too, and we should understand that. After all, does anyone expect anything out of this season? Better to hold onto your money than pay over the odds just because it’s January.

Comment #12I do think people need to calm down a little on here, if people seroiusly think we are gonna splash a massive amount of money in jan i would highly recommend you go and seek professionl help, i do think we will get in 3-5 new bodies either loan deals or reseanable tranfer fees, and i for one agree with that.

Comment #17We urgently need a reliable left back and centre back. I would like to see Edgar as a backup for Nicky Butt if we do not sign any defensive midfielder. Other than that, with Barton coming back, we should do fine.

You are right, summer is when you get the big movers and Jan for filling gaps, but the postions that Toonastic mentioned are the gaps as that fool Ashley ignored the advice in the Summer and didnt get the players in. Unless we get at least a lb, rb, cm, acm we are only going one way and thats down.

Comment #24simon376 – We need a LB, RB and a CM this window, I would be happy with a left back and a midfielder this window as I know how hard it is to get quality players in.
Perhaps I’m just more realistic than most with what I expect from a January window.

Comment #27Kinnear has said alot since he’s been here and pretty much none of it has been true!
I think we need to take all this transfer talk with a pinch of salt.
We heard exactly the same from KK all summer and even last January but the club still didn’t bring in anywhere near enough players.
I’ll reserve all judgment until Feb 1st

Comment #33Make no mistake – look at the games we have left!!!! where are we going to get at least 22 / 25 points with the side we have without getting any more injuries, this year i think it will take at least 43 points to stay up, in that case championship here we come, along with portsmouth and stoke

Comment #35Little Willie, I know it isnt going to happen, but it’s what we need. If we are honest, while we have someone in charge who is only looking after his own bank balance, dont think it will happen in the summer either. As it stands, we will just have to put up with what we have and maybe a loan or two and hope for the best.

Comment #38Toonholic – good point. Selling is a worry. For me, it has to be the 2 newuns plus 1 for any leaving. And I think that’s a realistic expectation.
Who knows – perhaps that violent dwarf Wise will find some more diamonds in the rough? Another Jonas isn’t out of the question, and it’s quite common for loan deals to include permie options.
And Keith win’s today’s “Prozac User of the Day” award. Good on ya, Keith.
