Full Backs Likely To Be Kinnear Priority

With Habib Beye being out for a couple of months with his knee injury, and Jose Enrique doubtful for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Hull City, Joe Kinnear’s main priorities in January could be to get two new full backs to the club.

Kyle Naughton – Sheffield United full-back interesting Magpies

One player we have been linked with before and he seems to fit the type of players Mike Ashley wants to bring to the club, is Sheffield United right back Kyle Naughton.

The 20 year old full back has played for Sheffield United about 20 times, so he lacks the experience to make the move up to the Premier League.

Naughton is a product of the Sheffield United Centre of Excellence and Academy, and joined his home town club at age 7 years old and captained the academy side to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup in the 2006–07 season.

Naughton doesn’t appear to be the proven player Joe Kinnear says he wants in January, although he does look like a very good emerging youngster.

Kyle was born in Sheffield, and he is a quick, attacking wing-back who can apparently also operate on either flank.

During the 2007/08 season he went away on loan and was impressive during his 18 games at Gretna, despite their relegation from the Scottish Premier League that season.

Newcastle are said to be eying a bid of £1.5M for the player, but they may have to go somewhat higher than that to get Kyle.

Sheffield United are currently 6th in the Championship promotion race, so it may not be easy to prise the player free in January, since no clubs want to lose their players halfway through the season.

Naughton made his first start for Sheffield United in their 2-1 victory over Watford last September and from that point on he made the right back position his own.

And then after just eleven league appearances, Naughton was called up for the England Under-21 side, and in the 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic at Bramall Lane, he came on in the 60 minute.

If indeed Joe Kinnear is interested in Kyle, he will be one for the future, but will be thrown straight into the side in place of Habib Beye, until the Senegal International is fit again.

Comments welcome.

As back up and developing player he may well be a good recruit. But we need a proven premier quality right back now. Now is the time when we will see who wants to play for NUFC and who does not – whether it is coming or going. By the way Ashley – when are you packing your bags? Sometime this year I hope.

in my mind i feel that we should not be spending so much time on promising youngsters as opposed to players with proven premiership pedigree as some of our big names are out for a while.

a first choice premier leauge LB such as baines or bridge who is rumoured to go to man city soon are two players we should be more concerned about than kyle naughton at the mo, however summer is an excellent time to pounce on youngsters like him and fabian delph.

    mon the toon!

On a separate note, as highly as I rate Owen, I’d bite Inter’s hands off for a cash plus D.Suazo deal. The guy’s got pace, skill and is a good finisher. Unfortunately, it looks as though Michael will run down his contract till the summer.

There’s paper talk that inter said they’ll give us Adriano for Owen straight swap. I’d take that like just dont think Owen wants to play for the club anymore. We should go for Lauren from Pompy instead proven RB Prem experience he’d be free transfer. There is also talk we’re after Papa boupa Diop & Samba. Would certainly add height to the team. The madness of the transfer window has begun! get ready to be checkin this blog everyday hoping for some good news! keep up the good work ED lets hope 2009 is a better year for us mags!

Owen is a complete git for not letting us get any money back on him after all the games he’s missed and just running his contract down. He’s aging, ridiculously injury prone, on obscene wages, uncommitted even as acaptain and now this.
At 9 M I would bite inters hands off and force Owen to go. It’s the only decent thing he could do for us.

    Poor manager

Way too many over paid, aging has – beens

Greedy, beer swilling, non communicative owner who could have sold to the Abu Dhabi group.

    Oh happy days – not!!!!!!!!!

i dont think we will sign anyone decent in jan.statistics prove it.noone sells decent players.but i feel another frenzy being whipped up by media and some fans about who we are gonna sign and it will be dissappointment vented out on the owner and staff, which might just tip the scales in favour of relegation.quite simply,we dont have the money,we are a poor injury ravaged side who are mid table when fit, with a big fan base that are getting increasingly frustrated.the game against liverpool was shambolic as was wigan.the couple of draws we jagged papered over thick cracks.we got played off the park against boro, spurs and chelsea.i fear for us in the long run,

Why sign a top quality player if Beye is already top quality? It’s a good idea to bring in promising future england internationals if we already have a quality player in that position.

Not the left back position is a different position altogether because Enrique is pretty much a promising player, we need someone as good as Beye on the left.

I don’t think most of you are seeing the bigger picture here. You are just thinking of next season..

We will NOT make any permanent signings in January. A few loans possible but NO signings. So we should just get behind the players/manager and hopefully we can field 11 to start.

A question, has the club or officials ever looked at our training ground/facilities to find out why we get so many injuries? Is the ground too bouncy, soft, hard-seems to be making the players weaker. There’s a few clubs that only ever seem to have 1-3 players injured max.

StevieA – I agree with you.

Naughton is just what we need at right back, young cover for Beye that can learn from him and hopefully force him way into the starting 11 ahead of him in the next year or two.

Enrique is different, we need someone first choice there now with him as back up.

All these players linked are just rumour atm but its depressive reading. Young, upcoming players that play in the CC is not good reading. I could quite easily go into an anti Ashley rant but as i said its just rumour . Surely Ashley has people advising him on the right thing to do, how much to spend and the right way forward. Surely Ashley can see for himself that we need players that will slot straight into the first team. I hope he does otherwise we will be watching CC football next season.

Don’t get carried away with the Jan trabsfer window, I can’t see us signing anyone big it will be championship and/or loan players coming in. I’m more worried about who’ll leave. I think we will struggle and hopefully just stay up.

Think David Edgar can hold up until Beye gets back if we can’t get a quality LOAN signing RB. We definitely need a quality LB, everyone knows that. Our injury crisis is a big problem and i really respect the decision Kinnear took to cancel some training sessions. Jan wil be a tough month in the t.market for Kinnear, let’s hope Dennis, Tony and most of all Ashley give Kinnear what he needs.

And can i say yet again COLOCCINI is NOT worth 10mil and the game against Liverpool proved that without a doubt!!

I have not said Beye ain’t good enough mate at all. Beye is one of our best players. What i am saying is that we need Premiership standard players in not young CC players. Its so easy to see this how can the hierarchy at NUFC be so blind. Priority is stopping in the EPL so we are (rumoured) to be after all these kids which is totally the wrong time to bring them in. Get the proven players in first that will slot straight into the first 11 into the required positions and when we have secured PL status then target these kids. Even get the proven players in early in Jan and when we are satisfied with what we have spend the last week or so trying to snap up a few up and coming starlets.
