Given May Already Have Played His Last Game For Newcastle

Joe Kinnear has told the Newcastle fans that his team will go all out at the KC Stadium tomorrow to put in their very best performance, but Joe will also have a key decision to make as to whom he will play in goal tomorrow.

Steve Harper – could get his first game tomorrow for Magpies

The Newcastle side will have 2,00 Geordies at the KC Stadium tomorrow and Joe kinnear spoke to the Newcastle Chronicle today:

“All the fans who travel there will see a side giving it everything, no matter what the team is.”

“The nature of our fans has been magnificent.” “They have stood with us and they aren’t the type of fans who are fooled.”

“They will see our players working hard. We aren’t throwing in the towel.”

Newcastle ended 2008 with two bad defeats in a row, and as we have pointed out already this morning, this may have cost Newcastle their top goalkeeper Shay Given, and we’d expect bids to have been made for Shay before tomorrow’s game.

Joe continued:

“We are looking forward to the Hull game despite our injury problems.” “I am not getting too downbeat about Liverpool.”

“It was a day when nothing went for us and everything went against us.” “The match also came on the back of a tough game to Wigan.”

“We have conceded three goals against Liverpool from set-pieces, two corners and a penalty kick.

“The third goal has killed us, and we paid the penalty at the start of the second half.”

Kinnear will need to decide if he plays Shay Given tomorrow, and there’s at least three reasons for not playing Given:

  1. If Newcastle are indeed to sell Given in January the last thing they want is to have him get injured playing tomorrow
  2. If Shay Given plays tomorrow that would have him cup tied and be unable to play for another club in this year’s competition
  3. The final reason is less of a concern for such a great professional as Given, but Shay’s mind may not be right for the game tomorrow, given that’s he’s said he’s going to consider his options at Newcastle.

So look to see if Harper starts the game with Fraser Forster as back-up since young Tim Krul is at Carlisle on loan currently.

If Joe announces the side at around 2:30 pm tomorrow and Shay is not in the squad, it’s odds on certain that Shay has already played his last game for Newcastle, and it would have been the world class performance he put in against Liverpool last Sunday.

A fitting end to a remarkable career on Tyneside.

Ed, there’s various reports on the Given situation, I think you may well be jumping the gun a little. JFK has come out and said that given is contracted till 2011 and that he won’t be selling. You’re taking the tittle-tattle media reports and reporting them thus putting added pressure on the newcastle team and fans. How about waiting for something a little more concrete before waving good-bye to Given or at least report kinner’s reply to the situation which states that he’s had an hour meeting with Given this morning and that he’s still under contract and won’t be sold.

    I agree with Murphy.
PA is quoting JFK as insisting Shay is not leaving the club while Setanta Sport say the following:
“13.30: Joe Kinnear says Given is not leaving and is ranting and raving, swearing and cussing at the press conference. More when we get it, without the four-letter words of course.”

I would play him so he gets Cup tied and JK has already said he will start!

The chances are only 50% of all this is true, Shay probably told his AGENT(not lawyer, why would he tell him?) that he wasn’t happy with the way NUFC performed and he may think about leaving if he said that he’s probably said he doesn’t want to leave but may consider his contract!

The good thing all our managers did was make our Goalkeepers top class as they probably knew this day would come!

    Except fat Sam

Regardless of Givens situation – this window will be a major turning point in the history of hte team. On the 2nd Feb we will know how much Ashley is willing to invest in the team, we shoiuld know who wants to stay and play. The answer to these queastions will decide whether we are premiership or championship material. If hte latter it will be down to Ashley and his muppets if the former then we should allow ASley to develop the club as he has peviously said – the fact that big name big money signings have brought nothing but debt just shows that we are in need of a new approach – and one thatwill not bear fruit overnight.

Will be sad to see shay go, but can’t blame him and wish the man well.

he’s been our consistently best player for years and i’ve always felt sorry for the lad saving our embarrassing backlines over the years with his superb goal keeping.

he deserves better than nufc and will now probably get it, so goodluck shay.

with harper and krul as back up and a bit of cash in for him it won’t be the worst deal for us anyway i’m thinking.

    Quite a few.
Just chill if he goes we move on and play Harper no great shakes..I would prefer Harper to start at Hull anyway as Given’s head seems up his own backside right now.

I would love Given to stay, but we have 3 good keepers in reserve and it wouldn’t be disastrous if he left for good money. The thing I would be worried about is what sort of message does this give out. That all our best players want to leave. Who would want to stay and who would want to come?

whatever the reports say, the actual quotes just say he is very unhappy doesnt even say he wants to go – as says , it could clearly just be an expression of discontent and a message to NUFC to sort it out – think youre overreacting a bit here ed

no disrespect to Shay but with our GK backup looks like a win-win situation

One thing is for sure , after the Liverpool debacle the players confidence will have been shattered and the defence in particular . So what will they be thinking tomorrow if Given is playing and what will Givens mindset be ? I think what ever happens , Harper should be playing tomorrow and not Given .

    re Ed:

a huge over-reaction on the given story, your painting a doom and gloom picture, whats with all the stories on given going when kinnear has clearly said he’s not going and when we havent even heard from given yet!!!

given won’t leave for three reasons:

    1) shay is a loyal to the toon as he has proven, i don’t think he would jump ship now when we are so dangerously close to relegation, fair enough if he wants to leave at summer, he deserves that chance

    2) im going to give ashley some benifit of doudt that he want’s to win the fans back and certainly losing one of our best players is not a good way to regain the fans

    3) given is under contract, we are in a relegation zone, no matter how much money, i don’t think JFK would allow given to be sold now, just like he wont sell owen

Aren’t Spurs in as much of a relegation battle as us. They proved when we played them that they’re nowt special. As for Man City is Shay really that much of a mercenary, I’m not sure how he can possibly be motivated by money in the same way as Robinho and in terms of success Man City will not be playing champions league football at least until the 2010-2011 season barring a miracle this year. The only real improvement i can see is a move to Arsenal however Wenger has come out to day and said he isn’t looking for a keeper during the window.

    hello again lads,

to be honest, why are we bickering so much over given? does it honestly matter whether which keeper starts tomorrow? no not really, tho to be honest i wouldn’t mind steve harper playing as he only has 6 months on contract left and hasnt played at all this season

what matters at hull is the result. i don’t care who plays as long as our team plays well and the result is respectable.

one thing that does disappoint me though is the left back situation:

complaints about us only having enrique has a natural left back. well i do recall a certain two players who find our reserves to be too easy called ben tozer and tamas kadar.

we really should have given them a chance before the january window and see how good they would fare at left back instead of continuously using n’zogbia at left back when we know that he is not up to par at defending as he is an attacking player and should not be in defense.

however, it is january now so i suppose we definitely have to buy a left back as we can’t try out kadar and tozer after january, and in the event see that they aren’t up to scratch just yet and realise that we do need a left back.

unfortunately football is not a business where we can have small discussions with the staff and talk about why certain decisions are made because i would sincerely like to know what is going on at times.

that being said, thanks for the shout out.

    happy blogging

    Quote from Kinnear…

“speaking on players coming in Kinnear says he may have to go back to the drawing board after being linked with several Championship.

He added: “It’s tough at the moment because the players we want will not be released by the clubs they are at.

“We will move on and chance our arm elsewhere.”

Excuses already. Basically JFK cannot attract CC players never mind Premierleague players.
